Voters approve hotel/motel tax in Waukon, change in funding rates in Waterville

Voters in the communities of Allamakee County had little, if any, choice to make in electing candidates to their respective seats in the Tuesday, November 8 City Elections, as none of the five mayor seats, 22 city council positions nor four other official positions on the ballots featured a contested race.
The choice of "yes" or "no" was, however, on the ballots in both Waukon and Waterville, as both communities were faced with Public Measure items for voter approval. Waukon voters narrowly passed the four-percent hotel/motel tax put in front of them, giving just over 54% approval by a 152-127 margin. Waterville voters also approved (by a 16-2 margin) their Public Measure E, which called for switching the percentage rates for use of sales and service tax revenue between the public safety and repair fund (40% to 20%) and the fund for sewer system maintenance (20% to 40%).
The most unusual circumstance within the elected positions on the ballots occurred within the City of Lansing's elected officials, as the mayor seat and four of the five city council positions did not have declared candidates. In addition to returning that lone declared candidate, incumbent council member Deb Volker, to her seat, Lansing voters did likewise through write-in votes to incumbent council members Bill Burke, Joe Strobel, Becky Conway and Jeff Bechtel, as well as Mayor Don Peters.
