INDIAN GOLF GIRLS ARE NEIC TOURNAMENT CHAMPIONS!! FINISH 5-1 IN NEIC DUAL MEETS

The Waukon Indian girls golf team is the Northeast Iowa Conference champion for the 2000 season.
After finishing the NEIC dual meet season with just one loss - that loss coming Monday, May 1 in the Tribe's final NEIC dual of the season against Oelwein by a 179-181 final, the Indian golf girls blew away the competition at this year's NEIC Tournament, which was held at Oelwein Monday, May 8. The Tribe had four of its six golfers earn All-Conference honors at the meet, making for a relatively easy win over second-place Decorah by nearly 20 strokes.
The Indians will now wrap up their regular season dual meet schedule with a meet at North Fayette of West Union Tuesday, May 9 and a Friday, May 12 meet at Caledonia, which was rescheduled from its original May 2 date. The Tribe will then enter postseason play Monday, May 15 with its Class 2A District Tournament at Luana's Tri-City Golf Course. A top-two finish by the Indians or any Indian team members will advance them to the regional tournament Monday, May 22.

vs. Oelwein ...
An undefeated Northeast Iowa Conference golf season was just a few strokes off for the Indian golf girls. The lady linksters headed into their final NEIC dual meet at home with Oelwein Monday, May 1 without a loss in NEIC play. When all was said and done at that meet, however, the Tribe's NEIC mark contained its lone loss of the season, a 179-181 defeat at the hands of the Huskies.
"This was our best team round we have shot this year," Waukon girls golf coach said. "It just wasn't quite enough to get past Oelwein."
The Indians were once again led by junior Greta Martin, who earned medalist honors for the meet with a round of 41. She was directly followed by Oelwein's Jacci Darland, who fired a 42 to finish as runner-up medalist for the meet.
In addition to Martin's 41, the Indians also got a round of 44 from freshman Andrea Blocker and two rounds of 48 from seniors Cassie Reinke and Alicia Burke to complete their varsity team total at 181 strokes. Junior Kelli Egan and senior Michelle Irons also completed rounds for the varsity Tribe, Egan turning in a 51 and Irons a round of 53.
To just get by the Indians, Oelwein coupled Darland's runner-up medalist 42 with a 43, a 46 and a 48 to finish two strokes in front of the Tribe with a 179.
The Indian junior varsity posted a 208-251 win over Oelwein. The four Indian counters finished almost directly behind one another to complete the Indian team total, with freshman Maria Johnson leading the way with a 50.
Sophomore Kristal Clark was right behind Johnson with a 51, with sophomore Kristin Burke finishing with a 53 and freshman Gina Sweeney posting a 54. Seniors Jennifer Homewood and Erin Schulte also completed rounds for the Indians, Homewood shooting a 57 and Schulte a 60.
Oelwein counted rounds of 56 and 64 and two rounds of 66 for its team total of 251.

NEIC Tournament ...
For the first time in 10 years, the Waukon Indian girls golf team has perched itself atop the seven-team Northeast Iowa Conference, winning this year's NEIC Tournament Monday, May 8 at Oelwein by a decisive, 19-stroke margin. The Indians landed all four of their scorers in the meet's top ten individual All-Conference finishers, resulting in the first NEIC Tournament title for the Tribe since the 1990 season. This year's meet was divided up between two Oelwein courses, nine holes being played at Hickory Grove and nine holes being played at the Lake View club.

"We started out the new millenium with a championship," said Waukon girls golf coach Don Angel. "And, I counted, this is our 10th conference win since I've been here, so that's pretty good. All our girls played real well. We had five of our six girls start out under 50 on their first nine holes, so that's very good and that gave us a good headstart. Every one of our girls played just super and that really helped us to the title."
All four Indian scorers finished among the All-Conference top ten, the first time that's happened for Waukon since its initial occurence in 1995 when the Indians finished second at the tournament but had Jenny Sweeney, Tanya Tysland, Kris Zimmerman and Nikki Norton earn All-Conference honors.
This year's crew was led by the NEIC runner-up medalist finish of junior Greta Martin, who repeated as NEIC medalist again this year with an 18-hole total of 89. That runner-up finish was second only to Mandy Schwickerath of Crestwood, who also repeated this year as the NEIC individual champion with a score of 87.
Also helping the Indians to the title and earning All-Conference honors were freshman Andrea Blocker with a 93, and seniors Cassie Reinke and Alicia Burke with respective rounds of 95 and 97. Junior Kelli Egan and freshman Maria Johnson also turned in NEIC rounds for the Tribe, Egan finishing with a 102 and Johnson with a score of 111.
