Waukon softball team battles trio of Northeast Iowa Conference opponents to the end, including 10-9 loss in thriller at Decorah

Single connection ... Waukon softball sophomore first baseman Brenna Berns tags a pitch in the Indians’ 13-7 home loss to New Hampton Wednesday, July 1. Berns posted this single to drive in a run and also score one in the ballgame. View and find out how to purchase this photo and many more by clicking on the Photo Galleries link on this website.

The Waukon softball team continues to fight right up to the end of each of their ballgames, doing so again in three games this past week before having all three end up on the short side of their final results. That trio of losses included a 9-5 defeat at Oelwein Monday, June 30 before the Tribe suffered a loss of 13-7 at home to New Hampton Wednesday, July 1 and took Decorah right down to the game’s final out in a 10-9 road loss Friday, July 3.

Holding a 0-8 season record - all of those games being in Northeast Iowa Conference play, the Lady Indians were next scheduled to play four consecutive nights of competition to end their regular season, hosting Crestwood Monday, July 6 and then playing at Charles City Tuesday, July 7 before making up a June postponement at Waverly-Shell Rock Wednesday, July 8 and then hosting those same Go-Hawks Thursday, June 9. The softball Tribe will then begin postseason tournament play Wednesday, July 15 at and against 13th-rated Crestwood, with details of the Indians’ postseason tournament trail being printed in a shaded box elsewhere on the Sports pages in the July 8, 2020 print edition and e-edition.
