The Waukon softball team had its 2021 season brought to a close after splitting its first two Class 3A Region 6 Tournament games this past week, but not before giving its fans all the thrills involved with a pair of one-run final results in those two games. The Indians began their postseason journey hosting fellow Northeast Iowa Conference (NEIC) squad New Hampton Tuesday, July 6, the Tribe continuing a season-long history of high-scoring, one-run battles with the Chickasaws by pulling out a 10-9 victory at home in the opening round of Class 3A Region 6 competition.
The reward for that opening-round victory was another match-up with a fellow NEIC squad, the diamond Tribe playing at Crestwood Friday, July 9 in the Class 3A Region 6 semifinals. For the second consecutive time in a postseason game at Crestwood, the Indians jumped to a 1-0 first-inning lead over the host Cadets, but for the third consecutive season Crestwood put an end to the Indians’ season, this time by scoring the game-winning run on the final play of a 2-1 Indian season-ending loss - the third time this season the Cadets pulled out a one-run victory over the Waukon diamond dwellers on the final play of the ballgame.
The split of those two regional tournament games wraps up the softball Tribe’s season with a 12-19 overall record, including a 3-15 NEIC mark that places the diamond Tribe in seventh place in the seven-team final NEIC standings. The Cadet win advanced Crestwood to the Monday, July 12 Class 3A Region 6 championship game at and against seventh-rated Anamosa, a game in which the Cadets lost to the Blue Raiders, 4-1, to have their season ended.
