Historical Huinker posts best Indian State finish, sets new single-game school record
An already historic accomplishment for the Waukon boys bowling team led to even more history being made Tuesday, February 22 at the Class 1A State Bowling Tournament held at Maple Lanes in Waterloo. With qualification for this year’s Class 1A season grand finale by junior Cody Huinker and senior Chase Boydston marking the first time in program history that multiple Indian bowlers have qualified for State Tournament competition, the history-making continued when Huinker bowled his way to the highest-ever Indian finish at that season grand finale and did so with help from a new school record single-game total of 280 pins.
With the only other Waukon bowling State Tournament qualification coming from 2020 graduate Matt Rozzell during his sophomore campaign in 2018, and that lone season grand finale appearance yielding a 15th-place finish, Huinker bowled his way to a sixth-place finish in this year’s individual Class 1A State Tournament competition of 32 competitors. Making his State Tournament debut as well in his final season of competition, Boydston ended up in 32nd place among this season’s Class 1A State Tournament elite, bowling games of 143, 119 and 162 pins to compile a preliminary series total of 424 pins.
