Waukon High School fall musical earns “Distinguished Scene Award” from IHSMTAP
The Waukon High School Musical Theatre Department, under the direction of Sarah J. Bieber and Sarah Hagen, is a member of the Iowa High School Musical Theatre Awards Program. This program is dedicated to the improvement and quality of high school musical theatre programs. During a performance, two to three judges from the Des Moines Performing Arts come to watch a live show, critique, and provide feedback to the cast. They comment on all aspects of a musical production such as individual singing, individual acting, individual choreography, accompaniment music, the set up of the stage, makeup/hair, lights/sound, the pit band, and on the ensemble as a whole.
This school year, the cast of the 2021 Waukon High School fall musical “The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee” earned a Production Award for its performance of a specific scene from the show. All cast, crew and pit band members were honored with the Distinguished Scene Award for their performance of “Magic Foot” during the production.
“Bravo, 2021 cast, crew, pit and directors for your hard work, preparation and dedication to the WHS Musical Theatre Production of ‘The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee!” beamed Director Bieber. “We cannot wait to see the success of the WHS Musical Theatre Program grow as these young ladies and gentlemen continue to improve their craft in the school shows and beyond!”
Cast students involved in the production included Madelyn Helgerson, Jacquline Moruna, Sofia Acosta, Abby Wiemerslage, Caleb Perkins, Keira Miller, Gabriel Goettel, Annie Ellingson, Molly Peake and Olivia Dougherty. Crew members included Dekota Bechtel, Hailey Houg, Brinley Jones, Mercedes Wilkins, Ashley Velarde, Brenna Berns and Eireann Goettel. Pit Band members included Bailey Sherman, James VanderVelden, JoAnn Sherman, Ghada Ibrihim and Alaina Gebel.
