Kee football team plays West Central even in total yards, miscues factor into a 46-32 season-opening road defeat

The Kee football team battled its West Central host to an actual draw in total yardage in its season opener Friday, August 26. However, one could say that the host Blue Devils still had a bit more “Cushion” and an added advantage of already having played one game this season, a week earlier, prior to dealing the Hawks a 46-32 defeat.

“We must play much cleaner football to beat good teams,” Kee football coach Chad Winters said. “The penalties and turnovers really hampered us throughout the night, along with some missed tackles that led to big plays for them.”

The two teams slugged out an equal amount of 357 total yards of offense in the contest, with Kee’s gridders holding a 218-104 edge through the air, where four of their five touchdowns came from. West Central countered with a ground game that chewed up a 253-139 rushing yards advantage, with the Blue Devils’ “Cushion” coming from senior runningback Brandon Cushion, who racked up 226 yards and five of West Central’s six touchdowns in the contest, as well as four of the host squad’s five two-point conversions that gave the Blue Devils an added 10-2 advantage on the scoreboard.

The Hawks will look to regroup from their season-opening loss with their first home game and District 5 contest of the season this Friday, September 2 when they host Central City. The Wildcats come off a 44-21 home victory over Lone Tree in non-district play this past Friday.

“Attention to detail and getting all eight guys doing the right thing on every play will be the focus this week as we prepare for Central City,” Coach Winters forecasted.
