Supervisors complete proclamations for Week of the Young Child and April as Sexual Assault Awareness Month, approve pair of compensation matters

The Allamakee County Board of Supervisors met in regular session Monday, April 6 to address a full agenda of matters including the Proclamation for the Week of the Young Child, consideration of the payrate for Medical Examiner transport drivers, and the Proclamation of April as Sexual Assault Awareness Month. The meeting was called to order by Board of Supervisors Chairperson Tom Clark with Supervisors Dan Byrnes and Dennis Keatley present.

During Public Comment, Executive Director Val Reinke with Allamakee County Economic Development (ACED) made note of several upcoming events and scheduled meetings. Reinke noted that the next Coffee & Connections networking event would be held Tuesday, April 7 at Coffee on the River in Lansing in addition to noting that Main Street Lansing would be meeting with the State of Iowa this week as part of its annual certification process.

Reinke advised that the Mississippi River Parkway Commission will be meeting this week in Keokuk, which she plans to attend via Zoom web-conferencing. She further noted that she will be attending the Iowa Rural Development Summit in Dubuque in addition to noting that she will be speaking at this event as part of a housing related panel. Reinke also made note of the Reality 101 event at the Waukon High School scheduled for this Thursday, April 9, with the Northeast Iowa Family STEM Festival scheduled for that same day from 5-7:30 p.m., also at the Waukon High School.

Reinke advised that the New Albin Public Library will be hosting Tyler Sullivan with Iowa Scenic Views by Foot Saturday, April 11 at 11 a.m. (see article beginning on the Front Page of this week’s edition of The Standard). Relating to Sullivan’s scheduled presentation, Reinke shared that he will be discussing his travels which will include all 99 counties in Iowa with Sullivan in the process of developing a book including poetry specific to each individual county.

Among other events, Reinke noted that the Driftless Area Education and Visitor Center in Lansing will be hosting a presentation and documentary viewing by the Upper Iowa Audubon Society Saturday, April 11 at 1 p.m. focusing on the impact of light pollution on bird migration and the night sky.

The meeting moved into the Proclamation of Sexual Assault Awareness Month with Sexual Assault Advocate Shiloh Green with the Riverview Center, located in Dubuque, discussing and reading aloud the proclamation which notes that women, men and children of all racial, cultural and economic backgrounds can be impacted by sexual assault with both immediate and long-term consequences including post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), substance abuse, depression, homelessness, eating disorders and suicide. The proclamation noted the importance of individuals, organizations and agencies working together relating to sexual assault prevention and in supporting sexual assault survivors. Following discussion, the Supervisors approved April 2026 as Sexual Assault Awareness Month in Allamakee County.
