Summer days are long, but before you know it, back-to-school season will be here. With a new school year just around the corner, Emplify Health is encouraging parents and caregivers to start preparing now so kids can step into the first day feeling confident, healthy and ready to learn.
Step 1: Shift sleep and wake times
One of the biggest adjustments for children returning to school is the sudden change in sleep and wake schedules. After weeks of staying up late and sleeping in, the shift to early-morning alarms can be jarring (and tantrum inducing). Emplify Health experts recommend gradually adjusting bedtime and wake-up times at least two to three weeks before the first day of school – moving schedules earlier by about 15-20 minutes every few days until they align with the school-year routine.
“Consistency is key, and a predictable evening routine and consistent wake time can set your child up for success,” said Dr. Caitlin Barr, Emplify Health by Bellin pediatrician. “Parents of teens should know their bodies are biologically wired to fall asleep and wake later, so they may need extra encouragement and structure to reset their rhythms in time for the school year.”
Step 2: Set expectations and schedules early
To help kiddos transition back to the school year pace, re-establish structure into their daily routines. Reintroduce consistent mealtimes, limit screen time and set expectations for homework, chores and after-school activities in the weeks prior to school beginning.
Involve your kids in mapping out their weekly schedules. This can help foster ownership and independence and reduce anxiety about changes ahead. Review bus routes, drop-off and pick-up schedules and morning routines for the whole family ahead of the first day.
Step 3: Update medical and allergy info
Connect with your child’s school to ensure:
• Immunizations are up-to-date (your child’s pediatrician can verify)
• Required health forms and sport physicals are complete and filed
• Medications and instructions are provided. Consider a meeting with the school nurse if specific medical care is required during the school day.
• Allergy info is shared with the school and classroom teacher
There is still plenty of time to enjoy the rest of summer but making small adjustments and getting ahead of your back-to-school to list can make the new school year begin happily and healthily for all.
For advice on helping your children transition back to school or to verify immunization status, please connect with your child’s pediatrician.
