Monica Kay Smeenk, 64 years old, of Independence died Saturday, August 8, 2026, at the Rehab Center of Independence in Independence, following a long battle with Multiple Sclerosis. Private burial took place at the Postville Cemetery in Postville, with a Celebration of Life held Saturday, September 12 at the Ampersand in Oelwein. Memorials may be directed to the family. Monica was born September 12, 1961, in Postville, the daughter of Paul Henry and Beatrice Caryl (Guyer) Benjegerdes. She attended school in Postville and graduated with the high school class of 1980. She was united in marriage to Bernard Daniel Smeenk in 1980, in Postville.
Monica enjoyed baking, cooking, and sewing, and was especially proud of making each of her children baby blankets. She also enjoyed playing cards and traveling. Before her illness prevented her from traveling, Bernard and Monica traveled to all of the lower 48 states.
Monica is survived by her five children, Michael Smeenk of Minneapolis, MN, Benjamin Smeenk of Independence, Marcus Smeenk of Independence, Maricay (Don) Olsen of Davenport, and Charles “Casey” Smeenk of Independence; two grandchildren, Austin and Isaac Olsen; one brother, Matthew (Connie) Benjegerdes of West Union; one sister, Pamela Benjegerdes of Minneapolis, MN; and multiple nephews and a niece.
She is preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Bernard; one brother, Michael Benjegerdes; and one sister, Cheryl Benjegerdes.
