Waukon pair initially charged with Animal Neglect Causing Death in case of euthanized dog, has other animals removed from their immediate custody

Notification from a local veterinary office in late September regarding a dog that needed to be euthanized has led to the arrest of a Waukon man and woman on charges of Animal Abuse Causing Death.

Additionally, upon further investigation, a court order to commence dispositional proceedings was also filed for the removal of other animals from the custody of the two individuals.

Documents filed in Allamakee County District Court indicate that September 26, the Waukon Police Department was notified that a pit bull mix canine had been taken to a local veterinary office, with medical officials there determining that the dog was “grossly malnourished” and was in such poor physical condition that it needed to be euthanized to end its suffering, with no chance for further recovery, reportedly.

A Waukon Police Department report also filed as part of those court documents indicates the dog and its owner were previously part of a welfare check August 14 of this year, but it was later discovered that the responding officers were shown dogs other than the one that had prompted the initial call from a reporting party. Upon returning later to the residence, officers reported that the dog in question was viewed and “appeared to be skinny at that time but not in a concerning condition and the dog appeared to be energetic,” but it was recommended that the dog be seen by a veterinarian. By the time the dog was taken to the reporting veterinarian’s office, allegedly more than a month later, its condition was reportedly deemed so poor that the dog was euthanized to end its suffering.
