Saturday, September 10, the 5th Annual Pat Sandry Memorial Fishing Derby was held, benefiting Friends of Pool 9. There were 11 boats that participated in the tournament with two fishermen allowed per boat.

The results of the tournament are as follows:

Danny Sickles/Greg Gage: Largest catch of three catfish - 19.68 pounds;
Jim Sickles/Dallas Sickles: Largest Walleye - 2.42 pounds;
Mark Dehli/Jeff Cota: Largest Crappie - 1.80 pounds and Largest Blue Gill - 0.59 pounds;
Dan Halverson/Zac Halverson: Largest Northern - 1.56 pounds and Largest Bass - 5.65 pounds;
Andi Evanson and Dan Bakewell: Largest Catfish - 7.34 pounds;
Jason Halverson and Brian Hilsabeck: Largest Roughfish - 3.55 pounds and Largest Walleye - 2.03 pounds;
Travis Herman/Colin Steiber: Largest Bass - 3.05 pounds and Largest Blue Gill - 0.94 pounds.
 

A break-away Protestant group that originated in France will be the topic of a talk sponsored by the Decorah Genealogy Society at 7 p.m. Monday, October 24 at the Decorah Senior Center, 806 River Street. Decorah Genealogy Society Vice President Mike Coffey will speak about his Huguenot ancestors, who came to the Massachusetts Bay Colony in the 1600s from the Channel Islands, off the coast of Normandy.

His presentation will go into more depth about the Huguenots and he will also engage the audience about any of their ancestors who may have been Huguenots. The program is free and open to the public.
 

The State Preserve Advisory Board will tour Yellow River State Forest and Turkey River Mounds State Preserve to prepare for review of issues that will be discussed at an upcoming business meeting (to be determined and announced later).

The board will tour Yellow River State Forest in Harpers Ferry (Allamakee County) September 29, beginning at 1 p.m., at the headquarters office (729 State Forest Road). The tour will feature options to manage oak woodlands.

The board will then tour Turkey River Mounds State Preserve, near Millville (Clayton County) September 30, beginning at 8:30 a.m., at the parking lot of the former Bootleggers Tavern, in Millville (36835 Noble Road). The tour will examine options for forest management in the archaeological mounds area and recent hill prairie restoration work.

The Lansing City Council heard from Larry Schellhammer about his interest in renovating the Old Stone School at its regular meeting Monday, September 19. Schellhammer, of rural Lansing, told the council that he was interested in hearing the direction the City wants to go with the property.

Schellhammer - who currently serves as chairman of the Allamakee County Board of Supervisors - told the council, “there’s a lot of space, a lot of potential; but it also needs a lot of work. I don’t know that without some sort of grant it would be economically feasible to make apartments.”

He told the council that he is working on a building of a similar age in Waukon. “I have a passion for old buildings,” Schellhammer said. “This one intrigues me.”

A Lansing man charged in the May 9, 2022 strangulation death of another Lansing man has pleaded not guilty to the charge of First Degree Murder, according to Allamakee County court documents. Andrew Karvel, age 66, entered a written plea of not guilty at his arraignment hearing in early September.

May 9 of this year, the Lansing/New Albin Police Department responded to a medical call of an elderly man unconscious and not breathing. When officers arrived on scene, it was determined that 83-year-old Daniel William Lundy was deceased, and a death investigation was initiated.

“Remembering Civil War Veterans Of Lansing, Iowa and How They Helped Form What Lansing Is Today” is the topic of a program being held Thursday, September 22 at 6:30 p.m. at the Meehan Memorial Lansing Public Library. The public is invited to attend, or to share a story of Civil War ancestors.

There are around 50 Civil War Veterans buried in Oak Hill Cemetery and at Gethsemane Cemetery in Lansing about which nothing was known, until now.  Through researching old newspapers on http://lansing.advantage-preservation.com/, library staff was able to put together some of their stories. The public is welcome to help celebrate the lives of these men and Lansing’s heritage.

Lansing’s farmers market had a successful summer and has added three more dates to keep the market going into the fall, including September 15 and 29 and October 13. New hours will be 4-6 p.m. each of those additional days. The market will be located in the same place, Clear Creek Park in Lansing. The five-dollar farmers market tokens that were distributed in Lansing and New Albin earlier this year - sponsored by Kerndt Brothers Bank and New Albin Savings Bank - will still be accepted as cash at the fall markets. During its holiday-delayed regular meeting  Tuesday, September 6 due to the Labor Day holiday falling on its usual Monday meeting day, the Lansing City Council voted to approve Ordinance No. 23 - an amendment to the recently revised City Code involving the use of off-road vehicles within city limits.

Ordinance No. 203 reflects changes the State of Iowa recently made pertaining to UTVs and ATVs (utility terrain vehicles and all-terrain vehicles) and brings the City Code into agreement with what the State has mandated regarding use of these vehicles. Among the changes is the raising of the age requirement for operation from 16 to 18 years of age. The changes may be reviewed in full at the Office of the City Clerk in Lansing City Hall.

The council approved waiving of the second and third readings of the ordinance; it will go into effect the day after it is published in The Standard newspaper.

The Lansing Women in Business (LWIB) Group will host its 2nd Annual Fall Fashion Show Friday, September 16 from 6-9 p.m. at Coffee on The River in Lansing. This event will host local boutiques and salons along with other businesses.

Ticket sales are taking place through September 15, and tickets can be purchased at Coffee On The River, or online via www.Eventbrite.com (search for Lansing Iowa events and the Fall Fashion Show will list).

Each ticket holder will enjoy an evening of fun and fashion, along with hors d’oeuvres, wine and door prizes. There will not be any day-of or at-door sales.

The LWIB Group was formed by the many women in the Lansing Area that own or work in the area’s businesses with the direct goals of encouraging entrepreneurship with continued support and networking.
