Pair of Allamakee County 4-H members among recipients of Iowa 4-H Foundation scholarships

Two Allamakee County 4-H’ers were among the recipients of the more than 85 Iowa 4-H scholarships valued at over $127,000 awarded as part of the Iowa 4-H Foundation’s scholarship recognition ceremony held Sunday, July 11 in the Scheman Building on the campus of Iowa State University in Ames. Over 300 applications were submitted and scholarships were awarded to recipients from 49 counties across the state of Iowa with a wide variety of 4-H experiences.

“Iowa 4-H Foundation scholarships acknowledge the hard work and dedication of young people who have used their 4-H skills and experiences to ‘make the best better’ for others,” said Emily Saveraid, Executive Director of the Iowa 4-H Foundation. “We also are thankful for the many scholarship donors who fund these important opportunities for Iowa 4-H’ers.”

NICC to offer High School Drivers Education this fall

Northeast Iowa Community College (NICC) Business and Community Solutions is offering High School Drivers Education August 26-September 30. The course will be held from 4:30-6:30 p.m. Mondays, Tuesdays and Thursdays during that time frame at the NICC Waukon Center, located at 1220 Third Avenue NW in Waukon.

To satisfy the Iowa Department of Transportation (DOT) requirements, students must attend 30 hours of classroom instruction and six hours of Behind the Wheel (BTW) driving experience. Attendance is required at all sessions. Students must have an Iowa driver’s permit before the first class.

The deadline for paid registration is August 19 (free and reduced lunch students should contact the school office). To register, call NICC Waukon center at 844-642-2338, ext. 6700.

Raffle of quilt to benefit Lansing EMS ...

The staff members of Thornton Manor and Thornton Heights Assisted Living in Lansing are hosting a quilt raffle to benefit the Lansing Emergency Medical Services (EMS) Ambulance Fund. The EMS-themed quilt  (pictured above) was pieced and stitched by Eileen Smith and Arlis Myhre, and it will be on display at this weekend’s Lansing Fish Days in the Lansing Fire Station. All raffle donations will go toward the purchase of the new Lansing EMS ambulance, with the raffle drawing scheduled to be held December 17 of this year. Allamakee County Conservation to host presentations on Bald Eagles August 19

The Driftless Area Education and Visitors Center will host two Building Better Birders workshops Thursday, August 19 from 6-8:30 p.m. The presentations will be presented by Kelly McKay, Mark Roberts and Brian Ritter. The programs will be free of charge, but advance registration is encouraged and attendees will be asked to fill out a quick survey to help the presenters.

At 6 p.m., the Summary and Results of the Milan Bottoms Bald Eagle Night Roost will be presented. The Milan Bottoms is an area along the Mississippi River similar to areas in Allamakee County. Those who have ever wondered where eagles go at night or how they prepare for the winter will want to attend this presentation.

At 7:30 p.m., the Assessment of Human Activity on Bald Eagle Nesting will be presented. This study took place in the Upper Mississippi Wildlife Refuge including areas around Allamakee County.

Allamakee County Conservation to host Rattlesnake Program during Fish Days

The Driftless Area Education and Visitors Center in Lansing will host live rattlesnake programs Saturday, August 14 during the Lansing Fish Days celebration. Programs will be held at 12:30, 1:30, 2:30 and 3:30 p.m. Each program will last approximately 20 minutes and will include time for attendees to ask questions about Timber Rattlesnakes in the Driftless Area.

Waukon softball team’s 12-19 season marks the second-most wins in a season in the past nine years, sets variety of records along the way

The Waukon softball team played to a 12-19 overall season record during its 2021 campaign, those 12 wins representing the second-most wins the diamond Tribe has recorded in a season in the past nine summers, second only to a 14-19 effort two seasons ago. The Lady Indians recorded their first wins since that 2019 season, including their first Northeast Iowa Conference (NEIC) victories in two seasons, as the Tribe diamond dwellers played to a 3-15 result in NEIC competition to finish seventh in this season’s final league standings.

Register now for Waukon Park & Rec youth football and volleyball programs

Waukon Park & Recreation will be offering youth programs in football and volleyball again this fall. Those programs include Nerf Flag Football for first and second graders this fall, Flag Football for third and fourth graders, volleyball for third and fourth graders, and traveling volleyball for fifth and sixth graders.

Deadline to register all of these programs is Friday, August 27. Those interested may pick up a registration form at the Waukon Wellness Center, register online, or look at the City of Waukon website under the Park and Rec link or at the Waukon Park & Rec Facebook page for registration forms or additional registration information.

Sign up now for Waukon Park & Rec Adult Kickball League

Those who want to be active during the fall months should think about signing an adult kickball team up today. The league is open to high school sophomores (16 years of age) through adults. Games will be played Monday nights (possibly some Tuesdays/Wednesdays, if needed) at the Waukon Softball Complex by the Allamakee County Fairgrounds.

The league will start either Monday, August 23 or August 30. Anyone who would like to sign a team up or who needs any questions answered should contact Kim Kraus at waukonparkrec@gmail.com or text/call 563-568-7131. Teams must be signed up by Wednesday, August 18.

Pamela Croyle

Pamela Susan Croyle, 65, of Waukon passed away July 29, 2021 in her home surrounded by her loving family. Pam was cremated through Iowa Cremation and there will be a Celebration of Life held Saturday, August 21 from 4-7 p.m. at the FreedomBank basement in Waukon. A potluck style meal will take place at 5:30 p.m.

Pamela Susan Croyle was born December 2, 1955 to Mark and Marie (Kelly) Croyle in Waukon. Pam raised her children on a farm in rural Lansing with her former husband, Dean (Beanzy) Schellhammer, until she moved to town in 2008.
