The St. John’s Lutheran Church Sunday School youth recently compiled and donated a number of Infusion Activity Bags to the Infusion and Treatment Center at Veterans Memorial Hospital. The bags are full of activities to help pass the time for patients when they are in the Infusion Clinic, receiving their treatments. The Sunday School youth from St. John’s Lutheran Church in Waukon recently compiled and donated a number of Infusion Activity Bags to the Infusion and Treatment Center at Veterans Memorial Hospital (VMH) in Waukon. The bags are full of activities to help pass the time for patients when they are in the Infusion Clinic, receiving their treatments.

The Veterans Memorial Hospital Infusion and Treatment Center offers a wide variety of outpatient services, close to home.  Dressing changes, blood transfusions, medications and much more are offered locally by skilled registered nurses. They are now treating more and more patients with rheumatoid arthritis, Chrones disease and most any type of autoimmune disease.

The Infusion and Treatment Center also helps with chemotherapy symptom management, helping to keep patients feeling as good and as healthy as possible while they undergo their chemotherapy treatments at another facility.

Diabetes Support Group to meet June 20 at VMH

The Veterans Memorial Hospital (VMH) Diabetes Support Group will hold its next meeting Thursday, June 20, at 10 a.m. The meeting will be held at Veterans Memorial Hospital in the Large Conference Room, located on the lower level of the hospital.

This month the topic will be “Diabetes Myths – Busted”. Facilitator Angie Mettille will review many common statements she has heard regarding diabetes that simply are not true and will discuss the truths along the way as she sets these myths straight.

This diabetes class is open to everyone who has diabetes or has a friend or loved one with diabetes.

31st Annual Veterans Memorial Health Care Foundation Golf Tournament; Hole-in-one prizes


Health Care Foundation Golf Tournament hole-in-one prizes ... Thanks to Farm Bureau Financial Services agents, pictured in the photo above, left to right, Caitlin Mahoney, Andy Moore and Wade Bucknell, the first person hitting a hole-in-one on the first round of golf at the 31st Annual Veterans Memorial Health Care Foundation Golf Tournament will be awarded a new Harley Davidson motorcycle as pictured above. A new John Deere riding lawn mower, pictured below, will be the hole-in-one prize for the second round of golf at the tournament, thanks to Bodensteiner Implement - Waukon. The Veterans Memorial Health Care Foundation’s 31st Annual Three Person Best-Shot Golf Tournament will be held Monday, June 17. The tournament will be held at the Waukon Golf and Country Club beginning with a shotgun start at 9:30 a.m.

Thanks to Wade Bucknell, Andy Moore and Caitlin Mahoney, agents of Farm Bureau Financial Services, Waukon, the first person hitting a hole-in-one during the first round at the golf tournament will be awarded a new Harley Davidson motorcycle.

Also, thanks to Bodensteiner Implement - Waukon, anyone hitting a hole-in-one during the second round at the tournament will be awarded a new John Deere riding lawn mower. As always, many other gifts and prizes will be awarded to all the golfers participating.

Register for free sports physicals at Veterans Memorial Hospital - Waukon Clinic in July

Free Sport Physicals will be offered at the Veterans Memorial Hospital (VMH) Clinic-Waukon for all junior high and high school students who need the physical exam for participating in school sporting events. These will be held at the Veterans Memorial Hospital-Waukon Clinic the following dates and times:

• Wednesday, July 10 5:30-8:30 p.m.
• Wednesday, July 24 5:30-8:30 p.m.

 These clinics will include all necessary documentation, including a concussion screening, for participation in all school activities.  Physicals are scheduled in one-hour segments. The clinic staff will not be administering vaccines during this time. If those are needed for students, call the clinic at 563-568-5530 to schedule an appointment.

Waukon EMS Association Color Pop 5K scheduled for June 9

The Waukon EMS Association will be hosting a Color Pop 5K Sunday, June 9. This high energy event will be held at the Empty Nest Winery west of Waukon. The route for this family friendly event will be an off-road course with colorful surprises, all supporting a great local cause.

The Waukon EMS Color Pop 5K entry fee is $30 for each individual adult participant, $25 for each adult team participant and $20 for each 12 years old and under participant. The entry fee includes a Waukon EMS Color Pop 5K tee.

Online registration will be open soon. Same day registration will begin at 3 p.m. Color Pop 5K begins at 4 p.m. All participants are advised to wear footwear appropriate for uneven terrain.

After the Color Pop 5K there will be food and refreshments that are included for all paid participants. Participant supporters can enjoy refreshments for a free will donation.

The Veterans Memorial Health Care Foundation’s 31st Annual Benefit Golf Tournament will be held Monday, June 17, at the Waukon Golf and Country Club beginning with a shotgun start at 9:30 a.m.

Teams of three will play 18 holes of golf. Breakfast rolls, lunch, dinner and prizes for everyone will all be provided for the donation of $75.

This is the 31st annual golf tournament the Veterans Memorial Health Care Foundation has sponsored.  All those interested are asked to pre-register their team by calling the Waukon Golf and Country Club at 563-568-9939.

The Veterans Memorial Health Care Foundation is a volunteer board that raises funds to help promote health care in the area communities served by Veterans Memorial Hospital (VMH).

Stroke Support Group to meet June 6

Veterans Memorial Hospital (VMH) Speech-Language Pathologist Steven Mazzafield offers a Stroke Support Group for individuals who have experienced a stroke, as well as caregivers and family members affected by stroke.

Monthly meetings are held the first Thursday of every month at 2 p.m. at Veterans Memorial Hospital. The next Stroke Support Group meeting will be held Thursday, June 6 at 2 p.m.

The Stroke Support Group provides opportunities to share tips, tricks, or trials among participants, offer support for caregivers, and provide an opportunity for socialization.

While strokes can happen at any age, risk of stroke is greatest as people get older with the majority of strokes occurring after the age of 70. Risk factors for stroke include obesity, sedentary lifestyle, binge drinking, diabetes, smoking, high cholesterol, and high blood pressure.
