Obituaries are published in The Standard for a $45 fee and can be brought to the office at 15 First Street NW in Waukon, mailed to PO Box 286, Waukon IA 52172, or e-mailed to news@waukonstandard.com. Photos may be included for an additional charge of $15 (additonal photos are also $15). Obituaries of excessive length (longer than our single-column length of 15.5") will also incur an additional charge of $11/column inch for the content measuring longer than our 15.5-inch column length. June Freilinger

June “Junebug” Violet Freilinger, 93, of Monona died Friday, June 16, 2023 at Ossian Senior Hospice, Ossian. Mass of Christian Burial was held Thursday, June 22 at St. Patrick Catholic Church, Monona with Rev. Martin Coolidge as the Celebrant. Burial followed at St. Patrick Catholic Church Cemetery, Monona.

June was born June 10, 1930 to Leonard and Freida (Schmidt) Hofeldt in Milboro, SD. She graduated from Winner High School in 1948 and attended two years of college in Minneapolis, MN.

September 22, 1951, June was united in marriage to Roderick Joseph Freilinger at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church in Monona. Six children were born to this union. They made their first home in Yuma, AZ until Rod was discharged from the Air Force. Upon being discharged they then moved to Frankville, where they farmed for several years until Rod started Freilinger Construction.

Julie Herman

Julie A. Herman, 54, of rural Lansing died peacefully Sunday, June 18, 2023 at her home. Memorial services will be held Friday, June 23 at 11 a.m. at Old East Paint Creek Lutheran Church with Pastor Ken Kimball officiating, and inurnment will be in the church cemetery, both in rural Waterville.

Friends may greet the family from 9 a.m. until time of services at the church Friday. Martin-Grau Funeral Home in Waukon is handling the arrangements.

Julie Ann Herman was born April 10, 1969 in Waukon, the daughter of Charles Alfred and Helen Evelyn (Cole) Christianson. She was baptized and confirmed at Old East Paint Creek Lutheran Church in rural Waterville, graduated from Waukon High School in 1987, and received her semi driving certificate from Minnesota State College in 2000.

LaVonne Ewing

LaVonne A. Ewing, 93, of Waukon died Monday, June 19, 2023 at Good Samaritan Society in Waukon. Funeral services will be held Thursday, June 22 at 11 a.m. at Zion United Church of Christ in Waukon with Rev. Cathy Jurgens officiating. Burial will follow at Oakland Cemetery in Waukon. Friends may greet the family from 9:30 a.m. until the time of services Thursday at church. Martin-Grau Funeral Home in Waukon is handling arrangements.

LaVonne Ann Ewing was born April 16, 1930 in Waukon, the daughter of Carl and Esther (Hermeier) Kugel. LaVonne was baptized at Zalmona Presbyterian Church in rural Waukon and confirmed at Zion United Church of Christ (UCC) in Waukon. She attended Ludlow #1 country school, graduated from Waukon High School, then completed normal training and was a country school teacher; later, LaVonne attended Luther College in Decorah.

A funeral mass for Harold and Marlene Payne will be held Saturday, June 17 at 10:30 a.m. at St. Ann - St. Joseph Catholic Church in Harpers Ferry, followed by interment of ashes at St. Joseph’s Paint Rock Cemetery, Harpers Ferry. Memorial contributions may be made to The Alzheimer’s Association at https://www.alz.org/.

Marlene Payne
Marlene Eleanor (Delphey) Payne, age 82, passed away October 25, 2022.  She was born August 6, 1940 in Dubuque to Edward A. and Mildred (Hogan) Delphey.  She grew up in her beloved hometown of Harpers Ferry. Marlene later lived in Cedar Rapids, Binghamton, NY, and spent her final years in Fort Myers, FL.

Charlotte Jacobson

Charlotte Theresa Jacobson, 89, of Marion, formerly of Waterville, passed away Friday, June 9, 2023 at Terrace Glen Village in Marion. The family will greet friends from 4-7 p.m. Wednesday, June 14 at Faith Lutheran Church, located at 155 Boyson Road in Marion. Funeral Services will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, June 15 at the church, with Pastor John Albertson officiating.

Committal Services will take place at 11 a.m. Friday, June 16 at East Paint Creek Norwegian Evangelical Lutheran Church Cemetery, located at 1751 Gronna Drive, Waterville. Murdoch Funeral Home & Cremation Service of Marion is assisting the family with arrangements.
Charlotte was born April 17, 1934 in Waterville, the daughter of Holger John and Julia Geneva (Sanderson) Busness. Even as a little girl, music had always been one of her passions. At the age of eight, she began playing the organ at her hometown parish. She was a 1952 graduate of Waterville High School.

Jerry Nagel

Jerry D. Nagel, 66, of Marion, formerly of Waukon, died Sunday, June 4, 2023 at St. Luke’s Hospital in Cedar Rapids. Funeral services will be held Tuesday, June 13 at 11 a.m. at Bethlehem Presbyterian Church in rural Postville with Karla Johnson officiating and burial will be at the church cemetery.

Friends may greet the family one hour before the service Tuesday at the church. Martin-Grau Funeral Home in Waukon is handling arrangements.

Jerry Duane Nagel was born October 4, 1956 in Waukon, the son of Roland Verni and Mary Jane (Ferguson) Nagel. After graduating from Postville High School, he received his electrician training from NICC in Calmar. He moved to Wyoming and worked for an explosives company. While out there, Jerry met Cheryl Ann Woodral and they married August 12, 1978.

Dianne Johnson

Dianne L. Johnson, 69, of Soldiers Grove, WI, formerly of Dorchester, died Thursday, March 23, 2023 at her home in Soldiers Grove. Graveside services will be held Friday, June 16 at 4 p.m. at St. Mary’s Dorchester Cemetery in Dorchester. Martin-Grau Funeral Home in Waukon is handling the arrangements.

Dianne Lee Johnson was born September 30, 1953 in Waukon, the daughter of Harlan and Elinor “Jeanne” (Kannenberg) Johnson. She was baptized and confirmed at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Waukon and graduated from Waukon High School in 1971. Dianne lived in Dorchester with her longtime partner Walter Larson, where she worked at the post office. She enjoyed painting and woodworking with Walter.

Jerry Weipert

Jerry K. Weipert, 65, of Waukon died Saturday, June 3, 2023 at his home. At his request, a private celebration of life will be held at a later date. Jerry Keith Weipert was born March 5, 1958 in Wauzeka, WI, the youngest child of Leonard and Ruth (King) Weipert, with two older brothers and two older sisters. When asked about his childhood, it was tough, but one he didn’t make excuses for as an adult.

Carolyn Smith

Our wife, mother, grandmother, sister and friend, Carolyn Alice Smith of Postville, passed away peacefully with her family by her side Sunday, June 4, 2023 at Mayo Methodist Hospital in Rochester, MN after a short battle upon the reemergence of Non-Hodgkin’s Lymphoma. She was 79.

Her funeral services were held Saturday, June 10 at Community Presbyterian Church in Postville with Pastor Karla Johnson as the officiant. Burial followed at Postville Cemetery.

A life-long resident in the Postville area, she was born August 11, 1943, the third of four children of Richard and Evelyn (Dugstad) Olson. Carolyn was well-loved by her community. She had a long-standing relationship with God, baptized November 14, 1943 and confirmed May 25, 1958, both at West Clermont Lutheran Church in Clermont. Carolyn earned her diploma in 1961 from Valley High School.

Marlene "Molly" Habhab

Our loving mother and dear friend Marlene (Molly) Mae Habhab, age 86, passed away June 1, 2023 in Waukon. A celebration of Marlene’s life will be held later this summer.

She was born January 26, 1937, daughter of Dewey and Mabel (Herman) Miller, and grew up on a farm in Ludlow Township. She married in 1955 and a son, Darwin Allen Hanson, was born November 7, 1956; he passed away December 10, 1956.

Marlene later remarried and had three children.  Musty, Abby and Mimi were her pride and joy. She devoted her last 60 years to the care and upbringing of her children, guiding and fully supporting them through every step of their lives.

Marlene worked tirelessly to provide her children with a safe home and food on the table. In doing so, she often worked multiple jobs at one time. In the 1960s when the Old Stage Road in Ludlow was being black-topped, she hauled hot mix and was recognized as one of the best drivers in the road crew.
