Obituaries

Ronald Eugene Erb of Prairieville, LA, and formerly of Waukon, passed away March 16, 2025. Memorial Services will be held Thursday, May 29 at 11 a.m. at St. John Lutheran Church, Luana, followed with burial in the Pleasant Grove Cemetery, McGregor.

Born January 15, 1940 in Postville to Elmer and Arlene (Larson) Erb, Ronnie and his two sisters, Shirley and Janet, grew up on the family farm south of Luana. He graduated from Luana High School, Class of 1957 and worked at his parents’ Luana Tap and drove truck for Duane Wolter Trucking. He married Nyla DeSotel in 1958 and the couple later moved to the Waukon area with their six children.

Ronnie worked for a short time at Feuerhelm Manufacturing before becoming an LP gas salesman for Northeast Farm Service, where he was employed for 25 years. The couple also had a successful woodworking business, The Cradle Shop, that specialized in custom doll cradles. Ronnie and Nyla moved to Baton Rouge, LA, where they divorced.

James Roger Schlitter, 84, of Waukon passed away May 16, 2025, at Northgate Care Center in Waukon. A funeral service was held Thursday, May 22 at Leonard-Grau Funeral Home in Monona, with Deacon Patrick Malanaphy officiating the service. A private family inurnment will be held at a later date.

James, known as Jim, was born October 10, 1940, at home in Linton Township in rural Allamakee County, Iowa to Lester and DeLillia (Bollman) Schlitter. He attended country school #6 in Linton Township through the sixth grade, completed eighth grade, and graduated from Waterville High School.

Jim spent many years hauling milk for the Volney Cheese Factory before opening his own antique shop, called Jim’s Antiques, in Postville. Later, he became an over-the-road truck driver, owning his own semi and trailer, and continued that work until his retirement.

Raymond P. Steinhart, 88, of Platteville, WI, went to his eternal resting place surrounded by family Tuesday, May 13, 2025. A Mass of Christian Burial was held Monday, May 19 at St. Rose of Lima Church, Cuba City, WI, with Rev. David Flanagan and Deacon Bill Bussan officiating. Burial was in St. Patrick’s Church Cemetery, Hanover in rural Allamakee County. Memorials in Ray’s name may be sent to the funeral home at 123 North Jackson Street, Cuba City, WI 53807.

Ray was born May 8, 1937, in La Crosse, WI, the son of Oswald and Mary (Byrnes) Steinhart. He was one of four children. He was united in marriage to Margaret Baxter June 23, 1956 at St. Patrick’s Church in Waukon. To this union, six children were born: Joan, John, Mary, Joseph, Gerald and Janet.

A Celebration of Life honoring the life and legacy of Dave Duncklee will be held Saturday, June 7 from 11 a.m.-2 p.m. at the Waukon Middle School cafeteria. He passed away earlier this year at the age of 84.

Mr. Duncklee dedicated over 30 years to teaching and shaping the lives of countless individuals in the local community. This will be an informal gathering where friends, family, former students, and colleagues can come together to share memories and honor Dave’s life. Around noon, we will invite those who wish to share a story or reflection.

• Veterans Memorial Hospital
• Allamakee Driftless and Educational Center.
 

Steven “Steve” L.  Morarend, 73, of Lansing died Saturday, April 19, 2025, at Gundersen Lutheran Medical Center in La Crosse, WI, after a tough battle with cancer for 15 years. A celebration of life will be held Saturday, May 17 from 11 a.m.-3 p.m. at Shep’s Riverside Bar and Grill in Lansing with military honors taking place at 12 p.m. A lunch will be served.

In honor of Steve, please wear Iowa Hawkeyes, Chicago Bears, Chicago Cubs apparel, or anything camo. Thornburg - Grau Funeral Home in Lansing is assisting with arrangements. In lieu of flowers, the family has requested memorials be made to the Lansing VFW.
 

Kathleen M. Frett, 92, of Moline, IL passed away Sunday, May 4, 2025 at Overlook Village, Moline. Arrangements are pending at Rafferty Funeral Home.
 

Dorothy M. Winke, 61, of Waukon died Tuesday, April 29, 2025, at her home. Memorial services were held Saturday, May 3 at Zalmona Presbyterian Church in rural Waukon with Pastor Sue Klimstra officiating. Burial was in the church cemetery.

Dorothy Marie Winke was born September 25, 1963, in Waukon, the daughter of Richard “Butch” Lyle and Mary Kay (Kerndt) Winke. She was baptized and confirmed at Zalmona Presbyterian Church, where she was a lifelong member. After graduating from Waukon High School, Dorothy went on to get her B.A. in graphic design from Iowa State University. As a graphic designer, Dorothy worked for various companies and lived in Minneapolis, MN, Boston, MA, and Colorado before returning to Waukon a few years ago.

As a talented artist, she enjoyed oil painting and watercolors. Dorothy also spent much of her time researching family ancestry. She loved animals, especially Samoyed dogs, and will be missed by her current companion, Allie.

Jean A. Gander, 94, of Waukon died Tuesday, April 29, 2025, at Maple Crest Manor in Fayette. Funeral services were held Tuesday, May 6 at St. Patrick Catholic Church in Waukon with Fr. Paulraj Sellam officiating. Burial was at Mt. Olivet Cemetery, Waukon. Send donations to St. Patrick School in Jean’s memory.

Jean Ann Gander was born April 17, 1931, in Waukon, the daughter of Thomas and Florence (Fahey) O’Malley. Jean was baptized into the Catholic faith. Her Catholic faith remained an important part of her life. She attended St Patrick School in Waukon, graduating in 1949. Jean was the last surviving member of her graduating class.

June 29, 1949, she married the love of her life, Earl Joseph Gander of Lansing. In 1951 they started farming near Lansing. In 1955 they moved to a farm in Hanover township of Allamakee County until purchasing and moving to a farm near Frankville. In 1987 they retired and moved to Waukon.

Steven L. Morarend was born in Guttenburg July 21, 1951, the son of Earl and Phyllis (Noack) Morarend. He graduated from Guttenberg High School in 1969, and served in the U.S. Navy from 1969-1973. August 9, 1975, he married Mary Schluetter at her parents’ home.

Gary Lee Hammond was born May 8, 1942, in Elkader, the son of Raymond and Beulah Hammond, and he passed away April 9, 2025. He was married to Nancy March 15, 1983, and later moved to Waukon, where the couple has made their residence for many years.

A Celebration of Life will be held at First Baptist Church of Waukon Thursday, May 8 at 11 a.m. Family and friends are invited. A meal is to follow.

Gary liked to stay busy and worked at RISE Ltd. in Elkader, TASC, Inc. in Waukon, helped with recycling pop bottles in Waukon, delivered the “Extra,” and mowed lawns for Jack Sweeney.

The couple considered First Baptist Church of Waukon to be their home church at the invitation of Larry and JoAnn Gelo, the couple’s friends. Nancy is appreciative of her church family who helped the couple for many years, in particular, Pastor Duane Smith and Arthur Clocksin; and friend, Jack Sweeney.
