Waukon baseball team to host own Jeff Houg Tournament this Saturday

The Waukon baseball team will host its annual Jeff Houg Tournament this Saturday, June 23, playing two games in a scheduled three-game event. Game one will feature Waukon playing South Winneshiek at 10 a.m., with South Winneshiek then playing Kee in the second game. Waukon will then play Kee in the final game of the series.

The Kee baseball team played a trio of varsity doubleheaders this past week, putting two of those six games in the win column to leave the Hawks’ season record at 10-6 overall, including an Upper Iowa Conference (UIC) mark of 8-2. A split with UIC opponents included home wins of 5-3 and 3-0 over Starmont Monday, June 11 followed by a pair of losses at home, 8-3 and 6-5, to the other undefeated UIC team, South Winneshiek, Thursday, June 14. The Hawks then wrapped up their week with another sweeping home loss to the only team in the state of Iowa with more summer baseball State Championships than the Hawks, Class 3A top-rated Davenport Assumption, Friday, June 15 by scores of 8-2 and 11-0 in five innings.

Kee softball team sweeps Upper Iowa Conference pair and other foes during the week, splits four weekend games to finish sixth at West Delaware Tournament

The Kee softball team competed in its busiest week yet, playing a total of nine games in five days and putting seven of those games in the win column to improve to 19-4 on the season, including a yet unblemished 8-0 mark in Upper Iowa Conference (UIC) play. Four more wins in UIC play began with home doubleheader sweeps of 10-0 and 11-1 over Starmont, both in five innings, Monday, June 11 and 12-0 and 15-0, both in four innings, over Turkey Valley Wednesday, June 13, with a 5-4 victory at Sumner-Fredericksburg placed neatly in between those twinbill triumphs Tuesday, June 12.

Waukon softball team caps off four-game week with lone victory

The Waukon softball team played through a single-win week, recovering from a tough stretch early in the week with its lone win of that timeframe to currently hold a 5-12 season record, including a 2-7 mark in Northeast Iowa Conference (NEIC) play. That tough early stretch at home included an 11-0 loss to Crestwood Monday, June 11, a 10-7 loss to North Fayette Valley Tuesday, June 12 and a 10-2 loss to Waverly-Shell Rock Wednesday, June 13. That challenging streak was finally halted with a 12-5 victory at Osage Thursday, June 14 to wrap up the week.

The Indians were scheduled to play at Charles City Monday, June 18, host Decorah Wednesday, June 20 and play at Oelwein Thursday, June 21 before playing in the Decorah Tournament Saturday, June 23. The softball Tribe will then wrap up its regular season schedule with a Tuesday, June 26 home varsity doubleheader with New Hampton and its NEIC finale Thursday, June 28 at Crestwood for another varsity doubleheader.

Waukon baseball team starts busy week with four wins - including first NEIC victories, ends it with three straight losses in the same night to Charles City

The Waukon baseball team put together its most successful stretch of the season for another winning week, starting that timeframe with four consecutive wins to extend a five-game winning streak before having that streak ended by a three-game sweep suffered to end the week. That winning beginning started with a 10-3 home win over Clayton Ridge/Central Tuesday, June 12 before the Indians got their first Northeast Iowa Conference victory of the season with a doubleheader sweep at Crestwood Wednesday, June 13 by scores of 5-4 and 2-0. Those winning ways continued with an 11-6 triumph at Osage Thursday, June 14 before that success streak was halted by three losses all on the same night against Charles City Friday, June 15.

Kee baseball team’s undefeated week includes pair of Upper Iowa Conference sweeps of Clayton Ridge/Central and Turkey Valley to continue win streaks

The Kee baseball team played to an undefeated week to extend a current eight-game win streak, including a yet undefeated 6-0 start to the Upper Iowa Conference (UIC) season that currently has the Hawks at an 8-2 overall mark. This week’s unblemished schedule included a sweep of a pair of UIC opponents, including wins of 7-2 and 14-4 in five innings over Clayton Ridge/Central at home Monday, June 4 and by scores of 13-2 and 12-2 in five innings Thursday, June 7. The Hawks were also scheduled to play two games in the Charles City Tournament Saturday, June 9, but that tournament was first moved to St. Ansgar due to wet field conditions before being called off due to stormy weather. It is not anticipated to be rescheduled.

Kee softball team’s undefeated week includes 68-0 margin in UIC sweep, pair of dramatic wins over top-10 rated teams, including State Championship rematch

The Kee softball team played to an undefeated week in six games this past week, perhaps showing a renewed focus after suffering its first two losses of the season in back-to-back games against top-15 rated opponents to end the previous week of competition. That renewed focused showed itself in a couple different aspects, as the Lady Hawks got their Upper Iowa Conference (UIC) season off to an undefeated start by outscoring UIC opponents by a combined 68-0 in four games, including doubleheader sweeps of 14-0 and 29-0 at Postville Monday, June 4 and 12-0 and 13-0 at home over Clayton Ridge Wednesday, June 6.

Academic All-State ...

In addition to Waukon boys track and field senior Abe Schwartz being a State Meet qualifier in the 4x200 for the Indians this season, he also showed an overall balance of athletics and academics by also earning Academic All-State honors from the Iowa Association of Track and Field Coaches. To earn such recognition, a senior track and field athlete must have achieved a 3.8 or higher grade point average (GPA) and a cumulative score of 28 or higher on the ACT, and be a participant in the Iowa High School State Track and Field Meet in at least one event during his or her year of application.

Waukon baseball team posts winning week with pair of non-conference victories wrapped around another Northeast Iowa Conference defeat

The Waukon baseball team posted a winning week on the field this week, winning two of three games played but remaining in search of its first Northeast Iowa Conference (NEIC) victory this season. The baseball Tribe opened the week with a 13-5 home triumph over Sumner-Fredericksburg Monday, June 4 before falling by a 4-0 count at Oelwein Tuesday, June 5 but bouncing back with a 6-5 victory at Turkey Valley Wednesday, June 6. A Friday, June 8 home doubleheader with Decorah was postponed by rainy weather until Tuesday, June 19.

Waukon softball team posts back-to-back NEIC wins over Decorah and Oelwein, 9-6 and 10-2, denied a third in 7-4 loss at New Hampton

The Waukon softball team put together its first win streak of the 2018 season in winning two of three games played this past week to currently hold a 4-9 overall record that includes a mark of 2-5 in Northeast Iowa Conference (NEIC) play. The Indians scored back-to-back NEIC wins, 9-6 Monday, June 4 at Decorah and 10-2 at home over Oelwein Wednesday, June 6, before having that streak ended by a 7-4 loss at New Hampton Thursday, June 7. The softball Tribe was also supposed to play in the Riceville Tournament Saturday, June 9 but that event was canceled due to stormy weather.
