The Waukon boys cross country team got its 2014 season off to a promising start, placing fourth out of 19 teams at the Oelwein Invitational Tuesday, September 2. The Indians tallied 152 team points to finish just beyond the pace-setting trio of three top-five ranked teams, Class 3A fourth-rated Center Point Urbana and second-rated Decorah, and Class 1A second-rated Denver.

The Waukon girls cross country team got its 2014 campaign underway finishing near the middle of the pack at the Oelwein Invitational Tuesday, September 2. The Indians tallied a total of 339 team points to finish 11th in the 17-team field of scoring schools.

The Kee football team improved its season record to 2-0 with a non-district romp at Rockford, 42-14, Friday, September 5. The Hawks once again dominated the first three quarters of the ballgame, cruising to a 42-0 advantage through three complete frames before allowing Rockford to finally get on the board in the final period.

The Hawks will now open Eight-Player District 4 play at eight-player newcomer Turkey Valley this Friday, September 12. The Trojans are also undefeated against the same two teams Kee has posted wins against so far this season, downing Rockford, 54-12, in Week 1 and Riceville, 40-14, this past Friday.

The Waukon football team renewed a bit of a gridiron rivalry in the second game of its 2014 season, traveling to fellow Northeast Iowa Conference school Decorah Friday, September 5 to play the host Vikings for the first time in several seasons. In a battle of Indian air vs. Viking ground, the game came down to the final minutes and some special teams play before the host school was able to secure the 23-22 Indian defeat.

The Indians are scheduled to play host to another Northeast Iowa Conference School when the Class 3A Crestwood Cadets come to town this Friday, September 12 for a battle of teams yet winless in each of their early-season schedules. The Cadets come off a 28-6 loss at home to Hampton-Dumont this past Friday, September 5.

The Kee volleyball team suffered a reversal of fortune this week from its initial week of competition, falling in a road triangular at Turkey Valley Thursday, September 4 to even up the Hawks’ season record at 2-2 in their fairly conservative early-season schedule. The Lady Hawks were swept in three sets each by both Class 1A seventh-rated Turkey Valley and Class 3A New Hampton.

The Hawks are next scheduled to play at South Winneshiek this Thursday, September 11 before competing in the Crestwood Invitational Saturday, September 13. Kee will then play host to Central Elkader Tuesday, September 16 before taking part in the Waukon Tournament Saturday, September 20.

The Kee volleyball team opened its 2014 campaign with a sweep of a home double-dual with Wisconsin schools from De Soto and Seneca Thursday, August 28. The Hawks dealt with De Soto quite handily by scores of 25-15, 25-13 and 25-22 but got a much tougher battled from Seneca before edging out a five-set victory with scores of 12-25, 25-14, 25-15, 23-25 and 16-14.

The Hawks are next scheduled to take on Class 1A 11th-rated Turkey Valley and Class 3A New Hampton at Turkey Valley Thursday, September 4 before playing at South Winn Thursday, September 11.

The Waukon football team got off to a quick start in its season and home opener against Class 1A top-five rated South Winneshiek Friday, August 29, the Indians scoring right away on the game’s third play from scrimmage. The momentum of that quick Indian score, however, was methodically worn away by a strong Warrior ground game and more stoic defensive effort, the combination of which outgained the Indians, 265-39, on the way to a 34-12 Indian defeat.
The Indians are next slated to renew a gridiron rivalry absent for several seasons at the home of fellow Northeast Iowa Conference school Decorah this Friday, September 5. The Class 3A Vikings come off a 14-0 loss to Class 2A top-five rated North Fayette Valley in their season opener this past Friday, August 29.

The 2014 Waukon boys cross country campaign is not likely to have a much different look to it at the beginning of this season than it did at the very end of last season. That prospect stems from the fact that all seven of the Indians’ competitors in last fall’s season-ending Class 2A State Qualifying Meet return with varsity letterwinning experience for the Indians this season.

As if returning six varsity letterwinners, including five of last season’s top seven runners, would not be enough cause for optimism for the 2014 Waukon girls cross country team, add in the fact that they get to draw from the experience of one of Waukon High School’s most decorated distance runners to further that optimism.
Brett Egan, a 2009 Waukon High School graduate and school record holder for Waukon boys cross country’s 5K distance, as well as Waukon boys track and field’s 3200 meter and 1600 meter distances, will begin his first season at the helm of the Waukon girls cross country program. Egan’s distance running experience includes being a 1600 meter high school state champion and 3200 meter state runner-up in his senior season, as well as being a Northeast Iowa Conference and District Champion in cross country before placing fourth at the State Meet his senior season.

The Kee football team looked to be opening its 2014 season with an easy victory, as it rolled to a 40-0 headstart through three full quarters at home Friday, August 29 against Riceville. But the Hawks learned how quickly momentum can change, as a little Kee misfortune and renewed Wildcat effort allowed the visitors to rattle off 34 unanswered points in the fourth quarter to give the Hawks a late scare before they secured the 40-34 victory.

Kee will hit the road this week to wrap up its non-district schedule at Rockford Friday, September 5. Coach Winters said most of his players who were victims of injury or heat in this past Friday’s contest should be available to play against Rockford, a team that comes off a 54-12 loss at the home of Eight-Player newcomer Turkey Valley this past Friday, August 29.
