Waukon bowling program takes strong step forward in just its second year with first-ever State Tournament qualification of sophomore Matt Rozzell

In just its second year of existence, the Waukon bowling program has already taken a very promising step forward, all the way to the ultimate destination of every high school athletic program, the State level of competition. Granted, that step was taken by a single individual, but Waukon boys bowling sophomore Matt Rozzell carried the entire Waukon bowling program with him when he competed in this season’s Class 1A State Bowling Tournament in Waterloo.

Young wrestlers in grades Kindergarten through sixth grade took part in the Waukon Junior Wrestling program during a recently completed season that lasted from November through January. This season saw the club members compete in four different team tournaments, including the South Winneshiek Tournament at Calmar, the MFL Duals at Monona, the Legends Youth Wrestling Tournament at Cresco (where the Waukon club won the $100 award for bringing the most kids to the tournament), and hosting their own Heffern/Lonning/Mathis Memorial Tournament at Waukon High School, where the club won the third-place team award. The Waukon Junior Wrestling program teaches basic moves for beginners and more advanced moves for seasoned wrestlers. Club leaders and members would like to express their appreciation to the coaches, sponsors and parents for a great season and are looking forward to an even better season next year. Kee girls basketball team has season ended at every team’s ultimate destination by 61-45 loss to eventual State Runner-Up Newell-Fonda

Best-ever season ended by eventual State Runner-Up ... Members of the Kee girls basketball team display their State Tournament Quarterfinalist trophy after their 61-45 loss in the first-round of the Class 1A State Tournament to fourth-rated Newell-Fonda Wednesday, February 28. The loss ended the Hawks’ 2017-2018 season at a best-ever 22-2 overall record that included a first-ever five-player Upper Iowa Conference (UIC) championship with an undefeated 12-0 UIC mark. Newell-Fonda went on to finish as the Class 1A State Tournament Runner-Up, falling to now three-time Class 1A State Champion Springville. Kee’s only other loss on the season came to undefeated Class 3A State Champion Crestwood, who capped off a perfect season by winning its first-ever girls basketball state championship. Left to right - Front row: Elena Rolfs, Laura Colsch, Katie Brennan, Nicki Wood, Annabelle Dibert, Kristina Dibert, Ashlyn Seitz. The Kee girls basketball team prided itself on a defensive effort very difficult to solve this season, limiting opponents to a season average of just under 31 points per game that helped the Hawks to just a single-loss regular season and their second-ever State Tournament qualification. The only two teams to successfully solve that Kee defensive puzzle this season also seemed to solve nearly everyone else’s as they both played to the State Championship game of their respective State Tournament bracket with undefeated season records, one of those solvings ultimately bringing the Hawks’ best-ever season on record to a final close where all other teams strive to be.

“Relax, we got this.”

That’s what first-year Kee girls basketball head coach Lisa Steckel said her players told her as they broke their huddle heading into the overtime period of their Class 1A Region 2 championship game played Wednesday, February 21 at New Hampton against sixth-rated West Hancock. No report as to whether the first-year coach relaxed or not, but her players certainly lived up to their promise as they went and “got” a 7-0 shut-out in that extra frame to post a 46-39 triumph and the program’s second State Tournament qualification in the last three seasons - and ever.

Tristan Hansmeier wrestles to sixth-place finish in 170-pound State Tournament bracket; joins father to become first father-son State Tournament placewinners

Hansmeier finishes sixth among Class 2A 170-pound elite ... Waukon wrestling 170-pound senior Tristan Hansmeier (second from left) stands in the sixth-place position on the Class 2A 170-pound State Tournament podium Saturday, February 17 at Wells Fargo Arena in Des Moines. Hansmeier won his first two matches of the three-day season grand finale but then suffered three consecutive losses to end up as a sixth-place finisher among the Class 2A 170-pound elite. Pictured, left to right, are the top eight placewinners in the 2018 Class 2A 170-pound weight bracket: Charles City sophomore Jack Sindlinger - eighth place; Waukon senior Tristan Hansmeier - sixth place; Mount Vernon junior Paul Ryan - fourth place; Dubuque Wahlert senior Kolton Bartow - Class 2A 170-pound Runner-Up; PCM-Monroe junior Lucas Roland - Class 2A 170-pound Champion; New Hampton senior Noah Glaser - third place; Estherville Lincoln Central junior Lincoln Coakley - fifth place and West Delaware sophomore Jack Neuhaus - seventh place. Sixth place in 1990 ... Waukon High School 1990 graduate Dave Hansmeier is pictured above from a yearbook photo during his senior wrestling season, when he wrestled to a sixth-place finish at the State Tournament at 140 pounds. That finish set the table for the first-ever father-son State Tournament placewinnings for the Waukon wrestling program, as Dave Hansmeier’s son, senior Tristan Hansmeier, wrestled to a sixth-place finish in the Class 2A 170-pound bracket at this season’s State Tournament, with his father, Dave, serving as one of this season’s volunteer assistant coaches guiding Tristan to that podium finish.

Waukon wrestling 170-pound senior Tristan Hansmeier controls Algona junior Carson Devine in their quarterfinals match at the Class 2A State Wrestling Tournament Friday morning, February 16. Hansmeier pinned Devine in 3:15 for his second consecutive match victory to start out the season grand finale but ended up falling in his final three matches of the tournament to end up in sixth place in the Class 2A 170-pound State Tournament bracket. Being the first State Tournament semifinalist since 2008 Waukon High School graduate Frank Weymiller when he finished fifth at 189 pounds in his senior season, Hansmeier’s state championship hopes were ended in that semifinal round by the eventual Class 2A 170-pound runner-up, senior Kolton Bartow of Dubuque Wahlert. Hansmeier also becomes the first State Tournament placewinner for the Indians since senior Adam Benzing placed sixth at 145 pounds in 2015. Hansmeier joins his own father, volunteer assistant coach Dave Hansmeier, in being the only father-son duo in Waukon wrestling history to each wrestle to a State Tournament placewinning, Dave Hansmeier also finishing sixth in his senior season in 1990 at 140 pounds. Photo courtesy of the Iowa Newspaper Association Photo Pool.

Like father, like son the old saying goes, and for Waukon 170-pound wrestling senior Tristan Hansmeier, his first-ever State Tournament qualification ended up telling that tale, as he joined his father, Waukon wrestling volunteer assistant coach Dave Hansmeier, as a sixth-place State Tournament finisher for the wrestling Indians. Hansmeier won two of five matches in his season grand finale debut to finish as this year’s Class 2A 170-pound sixth-place finisher, getting those two wins early in the tournament before falling in his final three matches.
