The Waukon boys cross country team ran to its best Northeast Iowa Conference Meet finish since the 2016 season when the distance Tribe finished third among their conference peers Tuesday, October 13 at Cresco. Behind the All-Conference finish of sophomore Nathan O’Neill, the Indians scored 100 team points to claim that NEIC bronze team finish.

The Indians are next scheduled to compete in their Class 2A State Qualifying Meet scheduled for Thursday, October 22 at Jesup, beginning at 4 p.m. Additional details about the distance Tribe’s State Qualifying Meet can be found in a shaded box elsewhere on the Sports pages in the October 21, 2020 print edition and e-edition of the Standard.

The Waukon boys cross country team took part in its final invitational meet of the 2020 season, running in the South Winneshiek Invitational Tuesday, October 6. The Indians finished third in the seven-team field of scored varsity teams, tallying 74 team points behind all five of their scored runners finishing within the top 20 of the 47-runner varsity race field.

The Indians are next scheduled to compete at the Northeast Iowa Conference Meet at the Cresco Golf Course Tuesday, October 13. The Tribe will then prepare for its Class 2A State Qualifying Meet scheduled for Thursday, October 22 at a site yet to be assigned, with Jesup being the closest of five Class 2A State Qualifying sites.

The Kee girls and boys cross country teams competed in their final invitational meet of the 2020 season, traveling to New Hampton Thursday, October 8. The Hawks did not have the required five runners to compile a team score in any of the meet’s races.

For the first time this season, the Kee cross country girls did not have enough runners to compile a team score at the varsity level of competition. The Lady Hawks were without the services of the junior pair of Class 1A top-rated Haley Meyer and Reagan Mudderman at Thursday’s meet.

The Kee cross country boys had only three runners competing the varsity race at New Hampton, not enough for a team score.

The theme for the Waukon football team’s final game of the 2020 regular season was one of “repeat” Friday, October 9 at North Fayette Valley in West Union.

The Indians were looking to repeat their recent trend of dominating wins over Class 2A District 4 opponents in a quest of repeating as the undefeated District 4 champions for a third straight year. Both of those accomplishments were completed with relative ease, as the grid Tribe proceeded to repeat a trend of scoring on its first seven offensive possessions while turning away the host TigerHawks’ first eight possessions of the ballgame on the way to a 48-0 lead before North Fayette Valley finally found the scoreboard for all three of its tallies against the Indian reserves late in the ballgame.

The Kee volleyball team took part in its busiest week of competition this season, playing in a pair of Upper Iowa Conference (UIC) dual matches during the week before taking part in its first and only weekend tournament of the season. That week rode a bit of a roller coaster as it played out, the Hawks first falling at home to South Winneshiek in a four-set battle Tuesday, October 6 and doing likewise in a five-set war at North Fayette Valley Thursday, October 8.

Kee’s net squad then competed in its only weekend tournament of this season, winning two of four matches at the Riceville Tournament Saturday, October 10. The Lady Hawks first defeated Riceville in two sets and then Clarksville in three sets before battling Turkey Valley to a three-set loss and then wrapping up the tournament with a loss to Postville in three sets as well.

A game that many were likely anticipating since a 26-21 slugfest early last season, and likely even more were anticipating as a late-season match-up to determine a district champion, proved to be much less dramatic in its final outcome as the Waukon football team rolled over Crestwood, 54-0, in the grid Tribe’s final home game of the regular season Friday, October 2. Having battled down to the final seconds in that 26-21 Indian victory last fall, and with both teams undefeated in Class 2A District 4 play entering Friday’s game, the battle began as many had anticipated, but a 30-0 outscoring by the Tribe in the second quarter erased any further drama or anticipation in the final result.

The Kee volleyball team continued in search of its first win at home this season, suffering a fate similar to its home opener just a week earlier by falling to West Central at home in three sets in an Upper Iowa Conference (UIC) match Tuesday, September 29. The Hawks got progressively stronger as the match went on, but not quite strong enough to fend off the match sweep. The Kee netters were dealt a 10-25 loss in set one before edging closer in a 17-25 loss in set two and then having the final set snatched away in comeback fashion by the visiting Blue Devils for a match-ending 21-25 Kee defeat.

The Waukon volleyball team remained in search of its first win in the Northeast Iowa Conference (NEIC) this past week, getting a double-dose of NEIC action on back-to-back nights to start last week. Although both of those matches ultimately ended up shy of the win column, they did so to differing degrees, the Indians first battling back and forth at home against New Hampton Monday, September 28 before falling in a full five sets but then having to travel to Class 4A sixth-rated Waverly-Shell Rock the very next night, Tuesday, September 29, and returning home with a loss in three straight sets to the Go-Hawk squad that has played more than three times as many matches as the Tribe this season and won more than twice as many as the Indians have even played in total.

A happy Homecoming slipped away from the Kee football team in the late minutes of their Friday, October 2 hosting of Springville for that annual celebration.

Facing a high-powered Oriole squad that ranks near the top-five among Eight-Player teams in scoring this season with a scoring average of just over 60 points per games, the Hawks were faced with the task of stopping - or at least matching - that firepower. Through three-and-a-half quarters of play, Kee’s gridders did just that - even fighting back from a 30-8 third quarter deficit, but Springville’s offense combined with some Kee misfortune denied any further comeback and resulted in the 50-30 Hawk defeat.

The Waukon boys cross country team hosted its own home invitational Tuesday, September 22, welcoming 10 other teams. Just eight of the meet’s 11 teams were able to compile team scores, the Indians finishing in the middle of that eight-team pack with 106 team points.

The Indians are next scheduled to compete Saturday, October 3 at the Crestwood Invitational. They will then wrap up their regular season at South Winneshiek Tuesday, October 6 before competing at the Northeast Iowa Conference Meet in Cresco October 13.
