The Dubuque County Sheriff's Office reports that an accident involving a pick-up truck and two motorcycles around 4 p.m. Sunday afternoon, August 31 has claimed the life of a Waukon man and injured his wife. The report indicates that Thomas Haberichter, 56, of Waukon and his wife, Nancy Haberichter, 50, were each traveling northbound on U.S. Highway 52 just south of Dubuque on their motorcycles when a pick-up truck driven by Kevin Stocks (age not reported) of Bellevue made a left turn into the path of both motorcycles near the entrance of Spring Valley Trailer Park.
The report indicates that both Haberichter motorcycles struck the pick-up truck. Thomas Haberichter was reportedly airlifted to the University of Iowa Hospital in Iowa City, where he passed away as a result of his injuries. Nancy Haberichter was transported to Finley Hospital in Dubuque for treatment of non-life-threatening injuries. Stocks was reportedly not injured in the accident.

It's been labeled the "end of an era." But the man it means the most to calls it "the beginning of a new chapter."
Gene Schultz, the legendary coach of Kee High School baseball for the past 45 years and the nation's all-time winningest high school baseball coach, had his retirement from that long-time helm made official Monday, August 18 with the acceptance of his letter of resignation by the Eastern Allamakee Community School District Board of Directors at its regular monthly meeting. That retirement brings to a close a coaching career likely never to be rivaled with an overall record of 1,754 wins against just 398 losses, but also opens the door to a number of other possibilities for Schultz and his family.

Betty Troendle of Allamakee County was inducted into the 2014 Iowa 4-H Hall of Fame during a ceremony at the 4-H Exhibits Building at the Iowa State Fair in Des Moines Sunday, August 17. A total of 82 counties participated this year and 110 inductees were recognized for their outstanding service and dedication to 4-H. Inductees or their surviving family members were presented a certificate by the Iowa 4-H Foundation as they were introduced on stage and honored at a reception that followed the ceremony.
“Betty's contribution to 4-H was widely felt,” said Morgan Heim, Allamakee County 4-H Youth Co-Coordinator. "Betty has taught her children well and influenced them to give back to their communities. Her hard work, heart of gold, and willingness to always help out has influenced many youth throughout her 4-H career in Allamakee County."

Bailey Shafer, 11-year-old daughter of Bill and Beth Shafer of Waukon, was crowned Junior Miss Corn Days during a ceremony in front of Stranded Memories in Waukon Friday, August 15 as part of this year's expanded Waukon Corn Days celebration. Contest organizer Jean Brink said that contestants were judged not on their appearance, but on "what's in your heart and in your head." Every year thousands of motorcyclists ride for the members of the military - to show America's support, thanks, and united pride by carrying one American flag throughout the country, passing it through all lower 48 states, carried by 100 riders in 100 days. The ride stops overnight at a Harley-Davidson dealership every night.  That dealer’s HOG Chapter carries it to another dealer the next day.
This effort, organized by The Nation of Patriots to pay tribute to, and honor, all of America's armed forces - past, present and fallen, is known as The Patriot Tour. Anyone wishing to learn more about the Patriot Tour can do so at their website nationofpatriots.com
This year, the Patriot Tour began May 24 during Memorial Day weekend at Badger Harley-Davidson in Madison, WI.  The flag will complete its full circle and land back in Madison, WI over Labor Day weekend.

Environmental technology to be installed at Alliant Energy's Lansing Generating Station is designed to reduce sulfur dioxide emissions by approximately 90 percent. The groundbreaking ceremony at the Alliant plant south of Lansing recognized  this achievement for the environment and Iowans.
The approximately $58 million project is expected to employ an average of 50 workers during construction and is scheduled to be completed in 2015.
"This environmental project will further our company's efforts to produce safe, efficient and responsible energy for our customers" said John Larsen, senior vice-president of Generation for Alliant Energy. "Together with our labor partners, contractors and the community, we are working to ensure that Iowa has the energy needed to grow while minimizing our impact on the environment. This includes transforming our generating fleet to cleaner and more efficient units."
