Matt Tapscott of Decorah announces candidacy for Iowa Senate District 28

Matt Tapscott ...

Matt Tapscott of Decorah has announced that he is running for the Iowa State Senate. Tapscott is running in Senate District 28, which is comprised of all of Allamakee and Clayton counties and parts of Fayette and Winneshiek counties. That seat is currently occupied by Michael Breitbach of Strawberry Point and is up for election in November 2020.

“Northeast Iowa needs a leader in the Iowa Senate who will listen to people and advocate at the Iowa Capitol for positive rural changes,” Tapscott said. “People tell me that they are tired of the ‘I don’t need to listen to you’ attitude and divisive politics by our current legislators. I promise to listen to Iowans living in northeast Iowa and to care for Iowa’s future by investing now in our people and our communities.”

Changed from four moving traffic lanes to two and a turn lane ...

Part of the Iowa Department of Transportation (DOT) paving project of Highways 9 and 76 through Waukon has included a reduction in the number of traffic lanes on the hill approaching Waukon (photo above) and the hill exiting Waukon (photo below). Prior to the current project, each direction of traffic had two lanes of moving traffic, but the newly paved roadways (pictured above) will now have a single lane each of northbound and southbound moving traffic with a center turn lane (designated by painted arrows at various points). The decision was made after discussion by DOT and City of Waukon officials in an effort to enhance traffic safety within that stretch of roadway.

LIFT celebrating one-year anniversary; Public open house is set for October 2

by Susan Cantine-Maxson

“What did you do before LIFT opened?” asked a volunteer.

“We went hungry,” said a client.

Lansing Iowa Food Trust (LIFT) opened one year ago during the first week in October at 220 South Third Street (the former Rethwisch Lumber building) in Lansing. Board members are pleased with the number of people that they have served in the past year. They are particularly proud that in a recent Readers Digest contest, LIFT was designated the “Nicest Place in Iowa.”

They will find out in the November issue of that publication as to whether they won the designation of the “Nicest Place in the U.S.” They feel this is quite an accomplishment for only being an organization for one year.

Monday, September 16, Main Street Lansing hosted a public meeting at Kerndt Brothers Community Center in Lansing to review the results of the recent Lansing Market Study survey. A total of 488 consumers responded to the survey, which was well past the goal needed to reach an accurate sample size of the community. In addition, 51 local businesses responded to a specialized survey created to dive deeper into business needs in Lansing.

The local Market Study Committee will next conduct a work session in October to work on a plan of strategies to further aid the Lansing market. The final document with recommendations should be completed by November.
