Letter to the Editor: "Smart meter" controversy

To the Editor:
Tuesday, July 1st, Black Hills Energy was in our neighborhood installing ‘smart meters’ on residents’ gas lines. I did not want the electronic meter and the installer agreed to put the old one back on. I called Black Hills Energy to tell them I was refusing the ‘smart meter’. Today I spoke with a representative from BHE and she said they are making lists of residents who refuse the new meters. Then at a later date they take that information to the state level to determine what to do about the ‘list of people refusing’. Basically, she inferred the action on their part will be to charge each residence extra each month for having to send out a meter reader. She did not know what that amount might be.

Letter to the Editor: Appreciation for poppy support

To the Editor:
The American Legion Auxiliary appreciates the wonderful support and generosity of the Waukon business people.
The monies received from poppy sales will be used to aid veterans and their families only. The unit sends birthday and holiday cards to those in local nursing homes. We distribute gas cards and food cards to help veterans. We send a donation to the Wounded Veterans Association every year. This once-a-year collection also provides the money for scholarships given to graduating seniors.
The Auxiliary also appreciates the efforts of all of the ladies who worked during the Friday distribution and the Boy Scouts who helped out Saturday morning.
The Auxiliary is grateful to the community for its continuing support.

Sincerely,
American Legion Auxiliary Poppy Committee 2014

Letter to the Editor: Express appreciation to dairy producers

To the Editor:
As June winds down, let us all give a salute to our Dairy Farmers here in Allamakee County that keep producing great dairy products, for all of us, that are fresh and reasonably priced. We are so lucky here in Allamakee County and in all of the state of Iowa, to have the availability of so many fresh dairy products all year round. Whether we are craving ice cream, yogurt, sherbert, cheese, milk etc., it is right there on our grocery shelf.
So, when out and about in our local communities, take a moment to express your appreciation to anyone that helps in the production of dairy.
We are grateful, dairy men and dairy women, please keep up the great job!

Word for Word

by Rev. Tom Buresh

One of our messages on the sign here at Zalmona this week was “Life is a puzzle.  Look to God to find the missing peace.” There is so much truth to that statement in today’s world.  We seem so busy in life these days it IS hard to find peace in our lives or peace in our hearts. The 4th of July is a holiday where many people do enjoy some time off with family and friends. So, try to enjoy the day and/or evening and as you watch and hear the loud fireworks that night, look for some peace in your life as well.
Speaking of puzzles, I was given this puzzle recently. It is not easy and I am not sure how to get the answers to you so, “Good luck.” Maybe you will have to call the neighbors in to help you, which may not be a bad idea to start with, for we don’t seem to do that as much as we used to.  They might also help give us “peace of mind” when they help us solve the puzzle

Letter to the Editor: "Congratulations"

To the Editor:
I would like to congratulate the mayor of Waukon and last year’s city council, along with the engineering group that planned out the street project for Third Street NE. The street looks great, but they took a neighborhood that had no problems in the June 24th, 2013 flood and got it flooding with only a 1-3/4 inch rain shower on Saturday, June 7th, 2014. They raised the grade from 8 inches to 18 inches over the original grade and put it above the sidewalks and adjoining properties. The 6 inch area that runs along the street, which I thought was the curb and gutter, will have to be renamed the curb and dam. When anybody in the construction crew was confronted and asked why the street and curb were so high, they would say, “This is what the plan calls for.”
