Armin Wuennecke

Armin G. Wuennecke, 87, of Cedar Rapids, formerly of New Albin, died Friday, April 5, 2013 at West Ridge Care Center in Cedar Rapids. Funeral services were held Monday, April 8 at St. John’s Wheatland United Church of Christ in New Albin, with Pastor Paul Burgess officiating. Burial was at the church cemetery.
Armin George Wuennecke was born December 15, 1925 in New Albin, the son of John and Ella (Wiemerslage) Wuennecke. He was baptized and confirmed at St. John’s Wheatland UCC Church. Armin attended the rural Wheatland Elementary School and graduated from New Albin High School. He served in the U.S. Army as Mess Sergeant at Ft. Leonard Wood in Missouri. Following his discharge, he took correspondence courses in bookkeeping and was a bookkeeper for a car dealership in La Crosse, WI, and later for Welch Fertilizer in Waukon for many years. April 16, 1983, he married Dorothy Beneke Brown at St. John’s Wheatland Church.
Armin was an active life-long member of St. John’s Church, where he held numerous offices. He was also a member of the American Legion. He enjoyed bowling league, dancing and square dancing. Armin and Dorothy also enjoyed traveling and took bus trips all across the United States.
Armin is survived by his wife, Dorothy of Cedar Rapids; a niece, Angela (David) Strong, and a nephew, Alan (Kelly) Wuennecke, both of New Albin; five step-children, Donald (Norma) Brown of Baldwin, MO, Darryl (Rosalie) Brown of Cedar Rapids, Darlene (John) Van Pelt of Antioch, IL, Dennis (Julie) Brown of Ames, and Daniel (Wanda) Brown of Madrid; 16 step-grandchildren; 30 step-great-grandchildren; four step-great-great-grandchildren; and a sister-in-law, Irma Ashbacher of Caledonia, MN.
He was preceded in death by his parents; a brother, Edgar; and a sister-in-law, Shirley Wuennecke.
Casketbearers were Alan Wuennecke, Martin, David, Jared and Donald Brown, Bryan and Michael Van Pelt, Jason Strong, and Tim, Aaron and Evan Brown.
