Letter to the Editor: Our country is turning its back on God

To the Editor:
When God created Adam and placed him in the garden He gave him a commission of the things He wanted him to do and one thing He did not want him to do. By so doing, He gave him a free will, which is the ability to obey God or to disobey Him. To obey God is to receive His blessings. To disobey God is to receive punishment or judgment. This principle has held true since the creation of man, and it will hold true into eternity. I believe there are at least three sources for man to know the will of God. One source is God’s revelation of Himself and His will is in His creation. “The heavens declare the glory of God, and the firmament showeth his handiwork.” Psalm 19:1. Another source of God’s revelation of Himself and His will is the Bible. A third source is Jesus Christ, His birth, life, death, resurrection, and ascension. I believe that our nation’s freedoms and prosperity are in proportion to our people’s and our government’s desire to function within the revealed will of God.
The Bible, in its history of mankind, demonstrates clearly that God blesses people who honor Him and He chastens people who disobey Him. This truth is clearly illustrated as recorded in Genesis 6:5 which states, “And God saw that the wickedness of man was great in the earth, and that every imagination of the thoughts of his heart was only evil continually.” Because of that, God destroyed mankind, with the exception of eight people, with the flood. Another illustration is in Genesis 19:24 which records God’s destruction of Sodom and Gomorrah because of their sinful behavior. God chose to chasten them severely. When Israel had godly kings who led the people to worship and honor Him, He blessed them with prosperity and victory over their enemies. However, when they had kings who led them into disobedience and idol worship, even sacrificing their children to idols, He brought other nations against them and they suffered defeat.
These truths are particularly applicable to our own country evidenced by God’s blessing on our nation with freedom, liberty and happiness. It seems evident to me that the founders of our country established the Declaration of Independence and the Constitution guaranteeing freedom to worship God according to our individual belief. By and large, the founders of our country fled the tyranny and religious persecution of Europe in order to enjoy freedom to worship God without the restriction of the government. For nearly 200 years God has blessed our country with prosperity and with victory over evil forces because we enjoyed the leadership of godly men like George Washington, John Quincy Adams, Abraham Lincoln and others.
In a keynote address “Call to Renewal,” Barack Obama stated on June 28, 2006 and posted on YouTube on the same date, “Whatever we once were, we are no longer a Christian nation - at least, not just. We are also a Jewish nation, a Muslim nation, a Buddhist nation, a Hindu nation, and a nation of nonbelievers.” With this influx of anti-Christian religion it is apparent that our country is gradually turning its back upon the God of the Bible. If this trend continues, most assuredly, the time will come when God will withdraw His hand of blessing. There may yet be hope that our country may escape the judgment of God if governmental leadership will stop embracing anti-God activity and the people of our country will turn to God by seeking the guidance of His Word, the Bible.
