Letter to the Editor: U.S. energy policy contributes to world hunger

To the Editor:
Your May 14th edition had an inspiring front page story about the Corner of Hope Foods Resource Bank. With participation of a few generous people in our community, this group has contributed over $300,000 to various charities for the purpose of alleviating world hunger. Much of this amount has come from farmers donating the proceeds of some of their acreage annually to the Resource Bank.
In sharp contrast, our Federal Government mandates have caused over 40% of our country’s largest grain crop to be used as fuel. By diverting this large amount of corn for other purposes, our government has been a participant in the reduction of a large potential world food supply and indirectly contributing to world hunger.
Over a million people worldwide die annually of starvation.
