Waukon Veterinary Service has welcomed a new veterinarian to its staff as of July 9. Dr. Monica Wagner, DVM grew up in rural Lansing and has a strong connection to the area with many friends and family members residing here.
In her high school years, Wagner served as an alternate Dairy Princess for Allamakee County and was involved in milking cows on an organic dairy farm, which was something that sparked her initial interest in veterinary medicine.
During her childhood, Wagner was involved in the care of pets and was familiar with the quality of care provided at Waukon Veterinary Service, making a return to the area for a great career opportunity, a good fit personally and professionally.
The Waukon Police Department reports having several unclaimed bicycles in its possession that have either been left behind, found and turned into the Police Department or recovered after being stolen. Department officials want to inform the public that these bicycles need to be claimed by September 15 of this year or those bicycles will be put up for sale in a public auction scheduled for Saturday, September 22 at 3 p.m. at the Waukon Police Station, located at 104 First Street NW in Waukon.
Anyone wishing to identify and claim a bicycle needs to do so by that September 15 date, and must claim the bicycle through either a description of the bicycle or a proof of purchase. Claims can be made by either calling 563-568-4338 and leaving a message or emailing reports@cityofwaukon.com with the subject line “bike”.
Allamakee County artist Andrew Wroble of Harpers Ferry received a 2018 Iowa State Fair Merit Award in the Fine Art Gallery Exhibition that coincides with this year’s State Fair in Des Moines. Wroble’s work is inspired by landscape in northeast Iowa and, in particular, his time spent in the Yellow River State Forest near Harpers Ferry. Two of Wroble’s works were juried in for the show which highlights over 200 compositions of original art. “Reaching Provence”, a large ink wash painting which the artist says “reflects daydreams on a slow fishing day,” was awarded third-place honors in the watercolor category at the Exhibition’s August 5 reception and awards ceremony.
As part of the “Allamakee Libraries Rock” program this summer, Dolores Tillinghast Memorial Library in Harpers Ferry is hosting a series of events as part of its Kids Summer Reading Program. The next event is scheduled to take place at the library:

Thursday, July 19, central Iowa experienced multiple tornadoes causing destruction in Pella, Bondurant and Marshalltown. More than 625 homes were either totally destroyed or heavily damaged. These people had little to no warning as these storms quickly developed.
One of the local agencies that responded immediately is the American Red Cross. As of July 23, the Red Cross had served 30,570 meals and snacks, distributed 16,007 relief items and surveyed the amount of damaged homes. The organization plans to continue to serve at least 1,000 hot meals twice a day until there is no longer a need.
Kerndt Brothers Bank is teaming up with the American Red Cross by accepting contributions which will be sent to the Red Cross to continue to prepare for, respond to and help people recover from disasters big and small. People turn to the Red Cross in their darkest hours looking for relief and help during their time of recovery.

Allamakee County Iowa State University Extension and Outreach is celebrating its 100th year of service this year. The organization was honored for this milestone during the Allamakee County Fair 4-H/FFA Livestock Auction Sunday, July 22. Bob Dodds, Assistant Vice President, for Extension and Outreach at Iowa State University in Ames, presented the Allamakee County Extension Council Members and Iowa State University Extension and Outreach Allamakee County Staff, with a plaque marking the occasion.
A hundred years ago the people of Allamakee County joined the extension movement and hired their first local extension agent. Today ISU Extension and Outreach serves as a 99 county campus, connecting the needs of Iowans with Iowa State University research and resources.
Northeast Iowa Community College (NICC) Business and Community Solutions is offering “Wrap it Up: String Art” Tuesday, September 4 from 6-8 p.m. at the NICC Waukon Center, located at 1220 Third Avenue NW in Waukon.
String art looks complicated, but it’s actually quite simple - just nails and string on a wooden foundation.
Class participants bring a hammer and needle nose pliers to the class and the instructor brings the wood, nails and string to help craft a spectacular piece of art, just by wrapping string around strategically placed nails. Participants can create a finished piece of craftsmanship to take home.

The Winneshiek Energy District welcomes Carmen Finken from the University of Northern Iowa’s Center for Energy and Environmental Education to the monthly Energy Breakfast program scheduled for Tuesday, August 21. Finken oversees Sustainable Schools AmeriCorps, a new program that serves as a resource and catalyst to help Iowa school districts save energy, save money and engage students in building a more sustainable future.
She will present the program at the August breakfast, beginning at 7:30 a.m. at T-Bock’s Underground, downtown Decorah. Register to attend at energydistrict.org.
Duane R. Duvel, 84, of Waukon, IA, died Saturday, August 11, 2018, at Winneshiek Medical Center in Decorah, IA. A celebration of life will be held Wednesday, August 15, at The Old Rossville Store in Rossville, IA, from 4-6 p.m. with a sharing time at 5:30 p.m. Private family military graveside rites will be held in Salem Cemetery in rural Waukon with Pastor Keith Selberg officiating. Martin Funeral Home in Waukon is assisting the family with arrangements.
