The East Elementary School Library in Waukon was recently awarded the Linked in the Library with iPads grant in the amount of $4,955.88. The grant was written by Allamakee Community School District Teacher Librarian Lisa Snitker through the CenturyLink Clarke M. Williams Foundation’s Teachers and Technology grants program designed to help fund projects that advance student success through the innovative use of technology. Snitker is pictured at left in the above photo with CenturyLink Regional Operations Supervisor Jonathan Herbst at the grant presentation. Linked in the Library with iPads will consist of library skills lessons in grades three through five, where students will use iPads throughout the year to create and complete innovative digital projects that bring learning outside the library walls. School libraries are no longer a place where students simply come to listen to a story and check out a book.

Kindness, patience, encouragement, creative, dedicated, innovative, passionate, enthusiastic, determined and caring. These words are ones that come to mind when I think back on the teachers who have made an impact on my life.

Mrs. Pyle, Mrs. Willman, Mr. Schultz, Mr. Keith and Mrs. Dohlman. These people spent countless hours working to ensure I left high school prepared to tackle the challenges I would face and ensure I would be a positive contributor to society.

As we celebrate Teacher Appreciation Week May 7-12, I reflect on those teachers who made an impact on my life. I wonder if the teachers I have had the pleasure to learn from know just how much they have contributed to my successes in life. I spent well over 15,000 hours with these people and yet, I am not sure I ever really expressed my appreciation for all they did.

Allamakee County Master Gardeners will hold their annual plant sale Saturday, May 19 in the 4-H building at the Allamakee County Fairgrounds in Waukon from 8 a.m. until 1 p.m. Since February of this year, several of the Allamakee County Master Gardeners have planted seeds, watered and transplanted many items in preparation for the plant sale.

At one time, Luster Heights Correctional Facility partnered with the Master Gardeners in the growing process for the plants prior to the facility’s closure. The gardeners supplied the seeds and growing medium and the plants were tended to in the growing process at the Luster Heights greenhouse.

The past two years, the Master Gardeners have been fortunate to form a partnership with the Waukon High School FFA Chapter under the direction of Jessica O’Connor. The FFA chapter has provided space and growing tables in its greenhouse at Waukon High School.

In what turned out to be its only meet of the week and its only home meet of the season, the Waukon girls golf team ended up not having a full team to compete against anyway as a depleted Oelwein squad came to Waukon with just three golfers Monday, April 30 and had to forfeit to the Indians’ team total of 215 strokes. The Tribe’s other meet of the week, a Tuesday, May 1 meet at South Winneshiek was postponed to Thursday, May 3 before finally being canceled altogether after another round of stormy weather rolled through the area.

The invitational season came to a close for the Waukon girls track team as the track Tribe competed in its final invitational meet of the 2018 season at Edgewood-Colesburg Monday, April 30. The track Tribe landed eight top-three event finishes to help rack up 89 team points on the way to a runner-up team finish in the 12-team field.

The Waukon boys track team wrapped up its invitational schedule at New Hampton Monday, April 30, competing in the Chickasaw Invitational. The Indians compiled eight event finishes within the top two places, including a trio of event championships, to tally 78 team points and finish third in the meet’s six-team field.

The track Tribe was next scheduled to compete Monday, May 7 in the Northeast Iowa Conference Meet at Charles City, a meet postponed from Thursday, May 3 due to stormy weather. The Indians will then prepare for their Class 2A State Qualifying Meet at Osage this Thursday, May 10, with further details in the print edition and e-edition of The Standard.

Stephen “Steve” M. Smith, 65, of rural Postville passed away Sunday, May 6, 2018 near his home in rural Postville. A private family memorial service will be held at a later date.

Stephen Michael Smith was born July 18, 1952 in Waukon, the son of Ivan and Esther (May) Smith. He graduated from Waukon High School in 1970. In 1979 he married Jan Warren and in 1984 they welcomed their daughter, Josie Leah Smith. Stephen and Jan later divorced.

Roger F. Hager, age 76, of Dillsburg, PA passed away Friday, April 20, 2018 at the Milton Hershey Medical Center in Hershey, PA surrounded by his loving family following post-surgical complications. A visitation was held Wednesday, April 25 at the Cocklin Funeral Home in Dillsburg, PA.

Roger was born February 5, 1942 in Waukon, the son of the late Robert and F. Marian (Raisty) Hager. Roger was a 1964 graduate of Iowa State University, later receiving a second degree from the University of Wisconsin to hold degrees in Agronomy and Business. In 1971, Roger moved to Pennsylvania. He was a long-time employee of the United States Department of Agriculture, Natural Resources Conservation Service, retiring as a contract specialist in 2003. Roger also served on the board of the Dillsburg Area Public Library.

Derald “Bud” Reinhart, age 86, of Eitzen, MN, formerly of Caledonia, MN, passed away March 30, 2018 at his home. A Celebration of Life will be held Saturday, May 26 from 11 a.m.-3 p.m. at the Eitzen Community Center in Eitzen, MN.
 

Ryan R. Schulte, 38, of Waukon died Sunday, May 6, 2018 at Veterans Memorial Hospital in Waukon from injuries sustained in a fall. Funeral services will be held Wednesday, May 9 at 11 a.m. at St. Patrick Catholic Church in Waukon with Fr. Mark Osterhaus officiating. Burial will be at St. Mary’s Hanover Cemetery, rural Waukon.

Friends may call from 4-7 p.m. Tuesday, May 8 at Martin Funeral Home in Waukon, where there will be a 3:30 p.m. scripture service. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Veterans Memorial Hospital Ambulance Service or Waukon Fire Department.
