And then I wrote...

by Dick Schilling, "Editor Emeritus"

... that I have become sort of addicted to watching the presidential press briefings, and have come to the conclusion that Sarah Huckabee Sanders not only earns her government check as spokesperson, but should also get hazardous duty pay.

She faces a press corps that is almost unanimously hostile toward the president and his administration, but lately toward Sarah herself. And she is frequently confronted with things on which the president has ricocheted two or three times while forming a position.

Today’s conference was a short one, because Sarah wanted to clear time for the First Lady, who was going to talk about cyber bullying. I watched a few minutes of her talk, and then went to set out the two trash carts for next morning’s pickup.

Naig reminds farmers, apiarists to update information on Iowa Sensitive Crop Directory

Iowa Secretary of Agriculture Mike Naig encourages eligible farmers and apiarists to register or re-save their data in the Iowa Sensitive Crop Directory for the 2018 growing season. Two new mobile apps have been released to make it easier for members to access and input data.

“Iowa partnered with FieldWatch just last year to update and improve our state’s Sensitive Crop Directory and have been pleased by the positive response from applicators as well as specialty crop farmers and beekeepers. Hopefully these new apps will make the directory even more user friendly for everyone,” Naig said.

The FieldCheck app is designed to give applicators more functionality from their mobile device and while in the field.

Century and Heritage Farm deadline June 1

Iowa Secretary of Agriculture Mike Naig today reminded eligible farm owners that the deadline to apply for the 2018 Century and Heritage Farm Program is June 1, 2018. The program recognizes families that have owned their farm for 100 years in the case of Century Farms and 150 years for Heritage Farms.

“I want to encourage families that have a farm that would qualify for a Century or Heritage Farm award to submit their application by June 1,” Naig said. “We are already looking forward to the State Fair in August and the opportunity to celebrate with these families and highlight the deep history and strong heritage of agriculture in our state.”

Farm families with a century or heritage farm must submit an application to the Department no later than June 1, 2018 to qualify for recognition at the Iowa State Fair this year.

Be “Voter Ready”: ID: What to expect at the election polls

Last week’s article focused on Step One in being “Voter Ready” in 2018: Register to Vote. This week’s article is about Step Two: Bring a valid form of ID to the polls.

Valid forms of ID include:

1. Iowa Driver’s License (not expired more than 90 days)
2. Iowa Non-Operator’s ID (not expired more than 90 days)
3. U.S. Passport (not expired)
4. U.S. Military ID or Veteran ID (not expired)
5. Iowa Voter ID PIN card (must be signed).

In December 2017, Iowa Voter ID PIN cards were sent, by the Secretary of State election office, to all registered voters without an Iowa Driver’s License or Iowa Non-Operator’s ID. If you feel you should have received a PIN card, and did not, or you have lost it or misplaced it, contact the Allamakee County Auditor’s office at 563-568-3522.
