Waukon boys track senior Isaiah Welch takes flight on his way to a first-place effort of 20’0.75” in the long jump at the Indians’ Class 2A State Qualifying Meet at Osage Thursday, May 10. Welch’s championship effort in the event automatically qualified him for this week’s State Track Meet in Des Moines for the second consecutive season. He also joined fellow senior Abe Schwartz and the sophomore pair of Brock Hatlan and Dawson Baures in an at-large State Meet qualification with their third-place 4x200 relay finish in a time of 1:34.27.
Runner-up effort automatically qualifies ... Waukon boys track junior Brady Sullivan unleashes a shot put effort at the Indians’ Class 2A State Qualifying Meet at Osage Thursday, May 10. Sullivan’s 53’10” effort at the meet placed him second and earned him automatic State Meet qualification for the first time in the event.

The Waukon boys track team competed in a pair of significant meets this past week that matched the Indians up against some of their fellow conference and class colleagues, and ultimately proved to be an extension or extinction of their season. The Indians first battled to a fifth-place team finish at their Northeast Iowa Conference Meet hosted by Charles City Monday, May 7 after postponement from its original Thursday, May 3 date due to storms.

Waukon girls track senior Ellec Armstead clears the high jump bar at the Indians’ Class 2A State Qualifying Meet at Osage Thursday, May 10. Armstead jumped 5’0” to finish third at the meet and earn an at-large berth in this week’s State Track Meet.

Headington recorded a toss of 36’3” to earn runner-up honors at the meet and automatic qualification for this week’s State Meet.
Headington automatic in shot put; 4x800 and Armstead in high jump earn at-large State Meet berths
The Waukon girls track team competed in its two most important meets of the season within four nights of one another, bringing the 2018 track season to an end for many of its team members but proving to extend that season for a small handful of Lady Indians. The track Tribe opened the week by placing sixth at the Northeast Iowa Conference Meet hosted by Charles City Monday, May 7 after that meet had been postponed from Thursday, May 3 by stormy weather.
The Waukon boys golf team had the future of its 2018 season determined Thursday, May 10 at its Class 2A Sectional Tournament hosted by New Hampton. The tournament had actually been moved up one day earlier from its original Friday, May 11 date due to anticipated rainy weather.
Playing for the opportunity to advance further into postseason tournament play, the Indian golfers came up short of that goal, placing seventh in the eight-team field with a team total of 382 strokes. Likewise, none of the individual Indian golfers finished high enough to earn further advancement down the postseason tournament road in individual medalist play.

Derald “Bud” Reinhart, age 86, of Eitzen, MN, formerly of Caledonia, MN, passed away March 30, 2018 at his home. A Celebration of Life will be held Saturday, May 26 from 11 a.m.-3 p.m. at the Eitzen Community Center in Eitzen, MN.
Deb Tweedy, 63, of Waukon died Saturday, May 12, 2018 at Veterans Memorial Hospital in Waukon. Memorial services will be held Saturday, May 19 at 11 a.m. at the Waukon High School gymnasium with Pastor Bill Odermann officiating. Visitation will be held from 4-7 p.m. Friday, May 18 at St. John’s Lutheran Church fellowship hall in Waukon.
Martin Funeral Home in Waukon is handling arrangements. In lieu of flowers, memorials can be made to Veterans Memorial Hospital, Good Samaritan Center in Waukon and the Allamakee Community Schools Booster Clubs.
Debra Elayne Tweedy was born July 26, 1954 to Delbert R. and Myrna Wynema (Potter) Kaune in Maynard. She started her life on a dairy farm near Fayette. Her mother passed away at a very young age, and she was very close to her older sister, Janice, who helped raise her.
Ralph B. Hammel, Sr., 96, of rural Decorah died Sunday, May 13, 2018 at Thornton Manor in Lansing. Funeral services will be held Wednesday, May 16 at 11 a.m. at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Dorchester with Fr. Mark Osterhaus officiating. Burial will be at St. Mary’s Hanover Cemetery, rural Waukon. Friends may call from 4-7 p.m. Tuesday, May 15 at Martin Funeral Home in Waukon, where there will be a 3:30 p.m. scripture service.
Ralph Bernard Hammel, Sr. was born October 27, 1921 in the Wexford area, rural Lansing, the son of Joseph and Nora (Pierce) Hammel. He attended country schools near Lansing and helped farm with his parents; Ralph also spent a year in North Dakota working on wheat farms.
Leonard Matthew Heiderscheit, 98, of New Albin passed away Saturday, May 5, 2018 at Thornton Manor in Lansing. Memorial Mass of Christian Burial was held Saturday, May 12 at St. Joseph Catholic Church in New Albin with Father John Moser as celebrant. Burial will follow in St. Joseph Catholic Cemetery.
Leonard was born to John and Florence Heiderscheit June 10, 1919 in Holy Cross. He lived in Holy Cross until 1941, when he and his brother, Charles, entered the United States Army. Leonard served in the Aleutian Islands during World War II and received the Purple Heart for wounds received at Dutch Harbor, AK. He participated in the liberation of Attu and Kiska, two American islands occupied by the Japanese. Charles was killed in action in Okinawa. Leonard was a longtime member of the Kenneth Casey VFW Post #5603 of New Albin.
... that say what you will about President Trump’s strengths or weaknesses, it is hard to deny that his name has the power to promote some previously little known females to national fame ... or infamy, perhaps.
First we were treated to the appearance of a porn movie performer who, through lawsuits, has become nationally known, and whose performance fees have skyrocketed as a result.
Now comes a third grade comedienne who maybe was known only to late night TV viewers. She was hired by the national press for their annual gathering and reportedly unleashed an obscenity laced and racist attack against a couple of Trump’s associates who were present. Next morning, the entire sentient world learned her name.
Graduation is just around the corner. It is an exciting time for all who are graduating as they contemplate what their future holds. Many will wonder, “what is God’s will for my life?”
The concept of God’s will is often shrouded in mystery but it doesn’t need to be. There are some key concepts that we need to understand when it comes to knowing God’s specific will for us.
First, God wants to be known. He has revealed himself to us primarily through the Bible. Jeremiah 9:24 says: “but let him who boasts boast of this, that he understands and knows Me, that I am the LORD who exercises loving kindness, justice and righteousness on earth; for I delight in these things,” declares the LORD.” In this passage God says that He can be known and that there are specific things we are to know about Him.
I have had the great pleasure to work several track meets in grades 7-12 the last few years. These events showcase the most respectful youth, coaches, parents, and supporters of the community. To see some of the very best humans in the area, attend a track meet. These meets reiterate the spectacular vigor of our northeast Iowa population.
