Chanda Halvorson and Cody Runice of Fayette announce the birth of their daughter, Amiiyah Jo Runice, born October 27, 2018 at Veterans Memorial Hospital in Waukon. She weighed 7 lbs. 10 ozs. and measured 20-1/2 inches in length at the time of her birth. She joins siblings, Mercadees (10), Addysen (9), Karsyn (5), Kaydahlynn (4) and Karvyr (20 months).

Treven Davidson and Bailey Rissman of Dorchester announce the birth of their son, Gatton Paul Davidson, born October 29, 2018 at Veterans Memorial Hospital in Waukon. He weighed 7 lbs. 11 ozs. and measured 20-1/2 inches in length at the time of his birth.

Grandparents are Heather and Jeremy Rissman and Paul and Kathy Howes, all of Waukon. Great-grandparents are Reggie Rissman and Lori Thies of Luana, Karen and Terry Mulholland of Waukon and Jane Rissman of Waukon.

... that by now, you know who the winners were in yesterday’s midterm elections. As this is being written, October 29,1 have no clue.

I do know that I have no trust in the polls being quoted. I received the same polling call three consecutive nights last week, seeking opinions on the house district race. It was one of those “press one” type calls, so there was no way I could interrupt to say I had already taken the quiz. So I gave them the same answers three times in a row! I am sure I am not alone in that respect, so how can the poll be accurate?

At my age, I probably should not be terribly concerned about who wins what, since what the winners do isn’t likely to affect me very far into the future.

But I do care.

Partly because according to the Sunday Register editorial, I am an extremist!

Why?

How appropriate. Just the day after Halloween the Adam’s Family visited Waukon on the high school stage.  This ghoulish hysterical musical completely entertained and delighted the recently tricked and treated.

Leading the cast was Ryan VanderVelden as Gomez, the passionate, outlandish head of the household. The cool power behind the throne, Morticia, was played with delightful detachment by Leslie Halverson. Uncle Fester capturing his lunar obsession was portrayed handsomely by Sean Liddiard. Oonagh Ahouse captured Wednesday’s pluck and pique perfectly. Lurch, played by Aidan Jones, needed no words to convey his commanding presence.

Recently several volunteers were asked if the Allamakee County Food Shelf is federally funded. We would like to say we are not funded by the federal government or by the state in any way. We are completely funded by our community churches, 4-H clubs, area Boy Scouts and many other organizations, local businesses and residents of Allamakee County among our donors.

Your generosity is amazing. This summer, we announced that if people had extra garden produce, we would gladly take it. The response was great. We express our appreciation to everyone for all they do to help the food shelf. Without all of you, we wouldn’t have the Allamakee County Food Shelf.

Fall Certification
Unlike previous years, producers are no longer required to report their fall forage acres by December 15 to FSA.  These crops can be reported in the spring, by July 15, along with your spring-planted crops.  If you do insure any fall forage, make sure you still report this to your crop insurance agent. 

New resources will help get proven practices on the ground

Iowa Secretary of Agriculture Mike Naig today highlighted how the long-term water quality funding passed and signed into law earlier this year is being used to scale up water quality efforts in Iowa.

“Having dedicated, long-term water quality funding in place is critically important as we continue to expand our focus on edge of field conservation practices that have been proven to significantly reduce nitrate levels. We are excited to highlight the first examples of how Iowans will benefit from this legislation that provides more than $280 million for water quality efforts over the next 11 years,” Naig said.

A Stockmanship, Handling and BQA workshop featuring Curt Pate from Ryegate, Montana, will be held in Waukon November 17. The Stockmanship session teaches cattle handling methods that improve animal movement and cattle performance by reducing the stress on livestock. Pate will demonstrate low stress cattle handling methods that can be used whether gathering from the pasture or processing through corrals. The workshop will be held Saturday, November 17 at the Northeast Iowa Equity Sales Commission facility located north of Waukon on State Highway 76 starting at 10 a.m. and conclude about 2 p.m. 

In addition to animal handling, Denise Schwab from ISU Extension, will also be certifying participants in the BQA program. BQA is the foundation for the Tyson FarmCheck program which will be required for all who sell cattle to Tyson Fresh Meats in 2019. Other packers and many auction markets will also be requiring BQA certification.

Iowa State University Extension and Outreach Allamakee County office will host a Pest Control Operators Continuing Instruction Course (CIC) for commercial pesticide applicators Wednesday, December 5. The program provided by the ISU Extension and Outreach Pesticide Safety Education Program (PSEP) can be seen at office locations across Iowa.

The local attendance site for the December 5 CIC is the Allamakee County Extension Office located at 218 Seventh Avenue SE, Suite #102 in Waukon. Registration begins at 8:30 a.m. followed by sessions from 9-11:30 a.m. The registration fee increases after November 28. Since serving in Vietnam 50 years ago, U.S. Army Veteran John Curtin has continued to honor his country and his service in the military by participating in many area events.

However, this Saturday, November 10, Curtin, himself, will be honored for his military service during one of his favorite pastimes, an Iowa Hawkeye football game.

Curtin, of rural Waukon, was nominated by his family this past summer to be a “Hawkeye Hero” for a day. During the Iowa vs. Northwestern Military Appreciation Day football game this Saturday at Kinnick Stadium in Iowa City, Curtin will be recognized during a media time-out in the first quarter of the game, where a brief piece of his military story will be told and some photos will also be shared on the stadium’s big video screen.
