Cindy Lou Peterson, 65, passed Saturday, September 2, 2023 with her family by her side at home in Harpers Ferry on the Mississippi River. A Celebration of Life Ceremony will be honoring her Saturday, October 14 at 12 p.m., during the Annular Solar Eclipse. A riverfront reception will immediately follow at the Peterson’s home at 219 South 1st Street in Harpers Ferry. Martin-Grau Funeral Home in Waukon is handling arrangements.

Cindy Lou Peterson was born June 25, 1958 in Boscobel, WI, the daughter of Helen (Bellis) Ellenbolt and Conrad Bartel; she was later adopted by Larry Ambler. After graduating from Boscobel High School, Cindy attended Southwest Technical College in Fennimore, WI, and later received her H&R Block certification.

Karen Elaine Hutson, age 82, of New Albin passed away peacefully Sunday, September 3, 2023. There will be no services at this time. Cards and memorials may be sent to Renee Pillath at S 6404 Amann Road, De Soto, WI 54624.

Karen was born December 7, 1940 to Howard and Martha (Wendel) ReVoir. She enjoyed spending time with friends and family, especially her grandchildren. She was also a huge Elvis fan. Seeing him in concert was a great memory for her. She will be missed greatly by all.

Karen is survived by her children: Randy (Brenda) Davis, Renee Pillath (John McMaury), Shannan (Amy) Hutson and Shawn (Shana)Hutson; 12 grandchildren; her siblings: Arlene (Floyd) Ingles, Mary (Richard) Roeder and Bruce ReVoir; and her side companion, her dog, Bitsy.
 

Elsie Marie Sanderson, 91, of Waukon peacefully joined her heavenly family Friday, September 8, 2023. Funeral services were held Tuesday, September 12 at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Waukon with Pastor Bryan Robertson officiating. Burial was at Oakland Cemetery, Waukon. Martin-Grau Funeral Home in Waukon handled arrangements.

Elsie was born January 13, 1932 in rural Cresco, the daughter of James O. and Harriet (Schmauss) Hunter. She graduated from Assumption High School in Cresco. January 28, 1952, Elsie married Richard “Sandy” Sanderson in Cresco. In 1958, they moved to Waukon for Sandy’s career.

Together, she and Sandy shared a passion for collecting and selling antiques. Elsie loved spending time with her family and enjoyed cooking, baking and canning for them. There was usually a jar of homemade pickles in the fridge and freshly made bread, cookies or cinnamon rolls at the house. She also enjoyed quilting and following Iowa Hawkeye sports.

Debra Stevenson Troendle, 65, of Lansing passed away peacefully Tuesday, September 5, 2023 at Mayo Clinic Health System in La Crosse, WI. Funeral services were held Saturday, September 9 at Utica Lutheran Church in rural Ferryville, WI with Pastor Lynn Schreck officiating. Burial was at the church cemetery. Thornburg-Grau Funeral Home in Lansing handled arrangements.

Debra Sue Troendle was born November 27, 1957 in Viroqua, WI, the daughter of Ivan and Evelyn (Warren) Stevenson. She grew up on a farm near Ferryville, WI and graduated from North Crawford High School in Gays Mills, WI. She worked for Northern Engraving and while there, met Dennis Troendle. They married in September of 1980.

Catherine A. Batteen, 81, of Lansing died Tuesday, September 5, 2023 at Thornton Manor in Lansing. Graveside services were held Friday, September 8 at Gethsemane Cemetery in Lansing with Fr. Joseph Sevcik officiating. Thornburg-Grau Funeral Home in Lansing handled arrangements.

Catherine Ann Batteen was born April 1, 1942 in the Sand Cove area of New Albin, the daughter of Leonard and Theresa (Freilinger) Gander. She was baptized at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in New Albin and confirmed at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Lansing. Cathy attended Immaculate Conception schools before graduating from St. George High School in Lansing; her class was the second class to graduate from St. George High School.

November 24, 1979, she married William L. Batteen in Lansing. Besides farm work, Cathy also worked in the housekeeping department at Thornton Manor for 28 years. She loved playing euchre and completing word searches.

Offseason Management of CRP

As the harvest season is over and we have more time, landowners need to consider fall and winter management of lands enrolled in the Conservation Reserve Program or CRP. The next few months are an ideal time to begin scouting for weeds, trees, and shrubs that are beginning to sneak their way in. Although you may be required to burn or mow as part of your mid-contract management, these onetime practices alone often aren’t sufficient to remedy unwanted vegetation.

Early weaning may be necessary due to drought

As forage resources dwindle in times of drought, producers may need to consider early weaning options for the cow herd. Early weaning is designed to save body condition on the females by ending lactation and decreasing nutritional requirements. Getting each cow to a body condition score of 5.5-6 by calving is a key step in establishing reproductive success for the following year.

Terry Engelken, a professor with Veterinary Diagnostic and Production Animal Medicine at Iowa State University, says early weaned calves may present health challenges as producers are now dealing with a younger and lighter calf than those weaned at the traditional date.

I attended Rep. Ashley Hinson’s town hall in Waukon August 16. I expressed concerns about the environment and poor water quality in Iowa. Hinson told us that water quality and soil health is improving.

She reviewed from her notebook of talking points the initiatives her Republican caucus is pushing, which is primarily promoting fossil fuels and less government regulation. You may recall Republicans celebrating the U.S. Supreme Court ruling that the Environmental Protection Agency can no longer regulate some bodies of our nation’s waters.

The Auxiliary of Veterans Memorial Hospital (VMH) and Elliott Jewelers of Waukon are excited to announce they will soon be hosting their 18th Women’s Health Day wellness event Tuesday, September 26 at the Waukon Banquet Center. All ages are invited to attend any part of this educational event, beginning at 11 a.m. with a wellness fair offering a variety of free health tests and information, and a luncheon and program held from Noon to 1 p.m. This year the menu will consist of a full salad buffet, sandwiches, beverages and dessert.

All summer long, Veterans Memorial Hospital (VMH) in Waukon has been offering “Be the Match” stem cell sampling at all area special events. Now the hospital Laboratory will be offering that same service every day, Monday-Friday, from 7 a.m. to 3 p.m. for anyone ages 18-40 who wishes to participate and possibly save a life.

“Be the Match” connects patients with life-threatening blood cancers and diseases like sickle cell with a matching donor for blood stem cell transplants. The campaign provide patients and their families with one-on-one support, education and guidance through the transplant process, which improves patient outcomes. This is the same program that Robin Roberts from Good Morning America endorses following her own bone marrow transplant match 10 years ago. Many patients and their families are counting on drives like this to find their match.
