Sweeney's Village Farm and Home in Waukon has greatly aided in the success of the Little Switzerland FFA Chapter for many years in a variety of different ways. Again this year, they partnered with Red Brand Fencing and the National FFA Organization to donate $1,176 to the local chapter. Red Brand Fencing has been a proud supporter of FFA for 70 years and supports programs through its Home Grown Program. Through the Home Grown Program, for every roll of wire purchased at Village Farm and Home, $1 is donated back to the local FFA chapter. Annually, over 900 chapters from across the nation will receive a donation from the partnership that Red Brand Fencing has to offer. The donated funds will be used toward contest materials, National FFA Convention and other FFA necessities. From 2012 to 2016, Village Farm and Home, with the help of their customers, has provided $5,625 to the Waukon FFA Chapter.
This school year, there are two new fixtures on the playground at Waterville Elementary School - Buddy Benches. The idea behind the Buddy Benches, which are found at school playgrounds all over the world, is when a child has no one to play with or just needs a friend to talk to, they can sit on the bench and other students will know that they need a friend and can go join them. It is a place for friendships to bloom, as states the quote engraved on the benches. The Buddy Benches were constructed by the Waukon High School Industrial Technology class under the guidance of Jed Hemann, with woodworking by Roger Bollman of Volney, and painting by Sharon, Cody, Riley and Hayden Palmer. The benches were made possible by a generous grant from the Waterville Community Foundation to the Waterville Elementary Parents for Progress group, at the request of the school. Submitted photos.
Students at St. Patrick School in Waukon received some "hands-on" education in regard to health and hygiene recently. Andrea Leppert and Jared Donahue (left to right in back of the above photo), who are second-year nursing students at Northeast Iowa Community College this year, first taught students about thorough hand washing techniques and then used a special black light box, pictured at left in the photo above, to show St. Patrick School fourth grade students Jeremiah Howe, Claire Schulte and Brandon Leppert (left to right in photo foreground) just how many germs really do live on unwashed or improperly washed hands. The Allamakee Community Players will be presenting the Martin A Follose comedy "The Bachelor King" on the stage in the St. John’s Lutheran Church Fellowship Hall in Waukon. Performances are Friday and Saturday, October 13 and 14 at 7 p.m. and Sunday, October 15 at 2 p.m. Tickets are available from any cast member or by calling Kris Larson at 563-380-4531. When poor King Evian uses his last dying words to pass royal succession not to greedy Prince Daft but to Yokel, a foolish hillbilly, everyone agrees Yokel needs a wife to help him run the kingdom. Staging it as a Bachelor competition, his staff brings in eligible ladies to vie for the new king’s hand. Candidates are tested on their abilities in true American Idol fashion, followed by a Survivor challenge, with a little audience participation. Of course, running a kingdom is not easy and Yokel has other problems to deal with, as well.
The Allamakee County Board of Supervisors met in regular session Monday, October 9 to address a full agenda of items, including the discussion of revisiting the possibility of a fireworks ordinance, consideration of hiring for a Secondary Roads position and a Manure Management Plan update.
During Public Comment, Allamakee County Emergency Management Coordinator Corey Snitker briefed the Supervisors about a missing person search that took place over the weekend in the New Albin area and discussed a pioneer cemetery located in rural New Albin.
The Supervisors discussed and reviewed a Manure Management Plan update for Charles Deering for a site located on Highway 52, which was accepted and placed on file. Quarterly reports for the Allamakee County Sheriff's Department and the County Relief Office were reviewed by the Supervisors and accepted and placed on file.
Otto M. Thorstenson, 95, of Waukon died Sunday, October 8, 2017 at Good Samaritan Center in Waukon. Funeral services will be held Thursday, October 12 at 11 a.m. at St. John's Lutheran Church in Waukon, with Pastor Bill Odermann officiating. Burial with military rites will be at Old West Paint Creek Cemetery, rural Waukon. Friends may call from 4-7 p.m. Wednesday, October 11 at Martin Funeral Home in Waukon. In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials be given to Veterans Memorial Hospital or the Good Samaritan Center, both in Waukon.
Otto Milton Thorstenson was born December 31, 1921 in Albert Township of Benson County near Brinsmade, ND. He was the eighth child of Edward O. and Ida Sophia (Gjefle) Thorstenson. Otto was baptized at St. Olaf Lutheran Church and confirmed at St. Peter’s Lutheran Church, both near Minnewauken, ND.
Doris Arlene Hanson Van Fleet of Lakewood, CO passed away Monday, October 2, 2017 at the age of 94. Memorial Service will be held Thursday, October 12 at 10 a.m. at Glory of God Lutheran Church, located at 12200 West 38th Avenue, Wheat Ridge, CO.
The daughter of the late John and Emma Hanson of Waukon, Doris was born in Harpers Ferry. She graduated from Waterville High School in 1941 and obtained her bachelor’s degree at Iowa State University. She then continued her education and received a degree from the University of Michigan as a registered dietitian.
Doris worked as a dietitian at St. Mary-Corwin Hospital in Pueblo, CO before transferring in 1949 to Rose Medical Center in Denver, CO. There she became head dietitian and retired after 34 years.
Daniel J. Burroughs, 50, of Waukon died Monday, October 2, 2017 at University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics in Iowa City. Friends may call from 4-7 p.m. Friday, October 13 at Martin Funeral Home in Waukon, where there will be a 6:30 p.m. scripture service. Burial will be held at a later date in Mt. Olivet Cemetery in Waukon.
Daniel James Burroughs was born July 23, 1967 in Waukon, the son of Garland and Lorna (Rumsey) Burroughs. He was baptized and confirmed at St. Patrick Catholic Church in Waukon, and graduated from Waukon High School in 1986. Dan worked at Northern Engraving in Waukon until the plant closed in 2008. He then went to work for Benjegerdes Machine in Waukon until he became disabled. Dan enjoyed demolition derbies, watching his brothers drive race cars and working in the pits.

The Kee cross country teams wrapped up what is considered to be their regular season with a tough schedule of two meets in three nights this past week. Making it even tougher for the Hawks was the quality of competition at each of those meets, as well as either the threat of rain or the existence of it. The Hawks ran at the South Winneshiek Invitational Tuesday, October 3, where the Kee girls finished second and the boys placed fifth, with Kee then running at the New Hampton Invitational Thursday, October 5, with the Lady Hawks coming in third and the Hawk boys placing seventh.
“It was a good way to end the regular season,” Kee cross country coach Pat Wagner said. “Now, our most important running of the year begins with the Upper Iowa Conference Meet and our State Qualifier upcoming.”

The Waukon volleyball team played through a winless week of competition, remaining in search of its first win in Northeast Iowa Conference play. This week’s opportunity at that first league win fell short at home against Crestwood Tuesday, October 3 by scores of 16-25, 21-25 and 7-25 before the volleyball Tribe then missed out on any match victories at all for the week with three more losses at the Don Bosco Tournament Saturday, October 7.
