The Waukon girls cross country team ran in a rare Saturday meet this past weekend, traveling to Cresco Saturday, September 30 for the Crestwood Invitational. Rated seventh in Class 2A’s team standings, the Lady Indians posted runner-up finishes in each of three competitions at the meet, tallying 55 team points to finish behind Class 2A second-rated Crestwood’s championship total of 26 points.
The Indians were scheduled to next compete at the South Winneshiek Invitational Tuesday, October 3 near Calmar. Waukon’s cross country teams will then prepare to host this year’s Northeast Iowa Conference (NEIC) Meet Tuesday, October 10 at the Waukon Golf and Country Club, with the other six NEIC teams, Charles City, Crestwood, Decorah, New Hampton, Oelwein and Waverly-Shell Rock, all coming to town and the event beginning at 4 p.m. with middle school competition, followed by junior varsity girls and boys, and then varsity girls and boys.
For the fourth time in its five victories of this 2017 season, the Waukon football team put more than 50 points on the scoreboard, using another strong second quarter to help pull away to an eventual 51-27 victory at Monticello Friday, September 29 in Class 2A District 4 play. That offensive display, however, was provided by a somewhat different combination of the Indians’ arsenal, as the grid Tribe racked up a season-high total of 567 yards in the contest.
Marvin D. Roe, 70, of Waukon passed away peacefully at his home Friday, September 29, 2017. Memorial services will be held Monday, October 9 at 11 a.m. at Old West Paint Creek Lutheran Church in rural Waukon, with Pastor Ted Ager officiating. Burial will be at Old West Paint Creek Cemetery, Waukon.

Marvin (Marv) Dean Roe was born September 8, 1947 in Waukon, the son of Orrin and Julia (Olson) Roe. He was baptized at Old East Paint Creek Lutheran Church in rural Waukon and confirmed at St. John's Lutheran Church in Waukon. He attended Waukon schools.
Jerry W. Hartin, 79, of Lansing passed away Thursday, September 28, 2017 at home in the arms of his family. A Celebration of Life will be announced at a later date.
Jerry was born February 22, 1938 in Des Moines. He was the son of William and Jean (Olinger) Hartin. He graduated from Maxwell High School in 1957. He then entered the U.S. Navy, where he went to the Great Lakes Naval Station to train as a journalist. He was assigned to work on the SubPac paper in Hawaii, Pearl Harbor and Coronado until his honorable discharge in 1961.
Following his discharge, he worked on the newspapers in Newton, Fort Dodge and Davenport. He left journalism to attend Truman State University at Kirksville, MO, where he received his BA in Secondary English Education, and in later years he sought his Masters at the University of Northern Iowa.
John "Jack" B. Schulte, 63, of Harpers Ferry, formerly of Waterloo, died Thursday, September 28, 2017 at Crossing Rivers Health in Prairie du Chien, WI. Funeral services were held Monday, October 2 at St. Ann’s-St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Harpers Ferry with Fr. John Moser officiating.
John “Jack” Bernard Schulte was born July 26, 1954 in Cherry Valley, IL, the son of John Andrew and Laurayne Mary (Hawes) Schulte. When Jack was a young child, his family moved to Harpers Ferry, where he was baptized and confirmed at St. Ann’s-St. Joseph’s Catholic Church. Jack graduated from St. George High School in Lansing and then worked various construction jobs for the next few years.
Martha M. Orshonsky, 84, of Libertyville, IL met her heart’s desire when she went home to be with her savior Jesus Friday, September 29, 2017 at Libertyville Manor. Martha was born June 29, 1933 in Iowa and received her nursing degree at West Suburban College in Chicago, IL. She enjoyed music, and playing piano was her passion, even playing for her beloved church, Evangelical Free Church in Crystal Lake, IL. She also loved cross stitching, gardening and, most of all, her family.
Dave L. Schoeberlein, 59, of Waukon died Thursday, September 28, 2017 at Veterans Memorial Hospital in Waukon. Funeral services were held Monday, October 2 at the Waukon High School gymnasium with Pastor Bill Odermann officiating. The family asked that anyone attending the services Monday wear orange and black to honor Dave’s loyalty to the Waukon Indians. Memorials may be made to the Allamakee Scholarship Fund Inc., P.O. Box 144, Waukon, IA 52172 to help establish a scholarship in memory of Dave.
David Lee Schoeberlein was born July 30, 1958 in Fort Dodge, the son of Donald and Viola (Andersen) Schoeberlein. He was baptized at Trinity Lutheran Church and confirmed at Our Savior’s Lutheran Church, both in Humboldt. Dave graduated from Humboldt High School in 1977 and graduated from University of Northern Iowa in Cedar Falls, where he received his teaching and coaching degrees.
Get your walk on in Waukon ... The Iowa Healthiest State Initiative is asking Iowans to #GetYourWalkOn in Waukon October 4 and walk for 30 minutes at this 7th annual event, and to walk 30 minutes every day thereafter. Veterans Memorial Hospital in Waukon will host a walk beginning at Noon. The route will follow the WalkMore.ConnectMore route around the golf course, returning to the hospital. This 1.4 mile route walk will conclude at the hospital’s main entrance where free wellness testing, educational displays, photo booth and light refreshments will all be available. This year’s Healthiest State Annual Walk is encouraging Iowans to “Get Your Walk On” by walking 30 minutes Wednesday, October 4. Businesses, schools and communities are all encouraged to register a walk at www.iowahealthieststate.com.

The next LifeServe Blood Center Blood Drive will be held Monday, October 9, from 12-5 p.m., at the First Baptist Church in south Waukon. Blood drives are held once per month. The LifeServe Blood Center supplies Veterans Memorial Hospital with its blood and blood products.
The LifeServe Blood Center is seeking donors to ensure a safe and plentiful blood supply in Iowa. Because there is no substitute for human blood, the need for donors is continuous.
Over half of the United States population is eligible to donate blood, yet less than four percent donate on a regular basis. A single donation of blood can be used to save up to three lives and help in treatment of cancer patients, accident victims, hemophiliacs and surgery patients. The LifeServe Blood Center is committed to serving the needs of Iowans by saving lives through volunteer blood donation.
Veterans Memorial Hospital will not be offering a CPR course in October. The next class available will be offered Monday, November 13.
The cost for all CPR classes, for certification or recertification, at Veterans Memorial Hospital is the same and all registrants should bring along their own pocket mask. The card received with the course does certify attendants in CPR for two years.
