Northeast Iowa Community College (NICC) Business and Community Solutions is offering the class “Kids and Canvas - It’s Elementary!” Thursday, October 12 from 3:30-6:30 p.m. at the NICC Waukon Center, located at 1220 Third Avenue NW.

Let children explore the world of painting in this fun class designed for elementary school-aged kids. In class, the kids are provided the paint and artist’s canvas, an age-appropriate subject and step-by-step guidance to release each child’s inherent creativity.

Waukon State Bank has made its annual donations in support of Waukon school organizations through the bank’s Scoreboard Program. Waukon State Bank donates $10 for each football touchdown, $3 for each volleyball ace, $5 for each basketball three-point shot, $5 for each wrestling pin and $5 for each baseball and softball home run. From the 2016-2017 Waukon High School athletic seasons, donation checks totaling $1,525 were recently presented to the Allamakee Athletic Boosters, Allamakee Music Boosters, Waukon High School Drama Department, Waukon Wrestling Club and St. Patrick’s Catholic School in Waukon, all of which are represented in the surrounding photos at their respective donation presentations. Thursday, September 14, the Allamakee County Democrats monthly meeting welcomed Corey Snitker, Emergency Management Coordinator for Allamakee County. Snitker began by talking about the three levels of emergency management, from FEMA at the national level, to the Iowa Homeland Security and Emergency Management Department, and finally, the Allamakee County Emergency Management Agency. The county agency and its duties and responsibilities are part of the Code of Iowa, Chapter 29C and Iowa Administrative Code, Section 605.

The Allamakee County Board of Supervisors met in regular session Monday, September 25 to address a full agenda of items, including the Second Reading of the Social Host and Civil Cost Recovery Ordinance, consideration of several appointments and reappointments to County Boards and Commissions, and the revision of speed zones on County Roads X42, X52 and Columbus Road near Lansing. There was no Public Comment during that portion of the meeting.

The Waukon girls cross country team played host to seven other teams for the annual Waukon Invitational Tuesday, September 19, finishing in fifth place in the eight-team field. Fueled by a pair of top-20 individual finishes, the Lady Indians tallied 121 points to garner that team finish in the middle of the pack.

The Indians were scheduled to next compete Saturday, September 30 at Cresco. Waukon will then prepare for the South Winneshiek Invitational to be held Tuesday, October 3 near Calmar.

The Waukon boys cross country team hosted its annual Waukon Invitational Tuesday, September 19, finishing fourth in the nine-team field. Behind a pair of top-20 individual finishes, the Indians tallied 109 team points. Class 3A third-rated Decorah ran to a nearly perfect team score of just 18 points, claiming five of the meet’s top six individual finishes.

The Indians were scheduled to next compete Saturday, September 30 at Cresco. Waukon will then prepare for the South Winneshiek Invitational Tuesday, October 3 near Calmar.

The Kee volleyball team won two of its three matches this week, falling at Upper Iowa Conference-leading and Class 1A fourth-rated Starmont Thursday, September 21 by scores of 11-25, 8-25 and 9-25 to wrap up the week. Prior to that loss, the Lady Hawks won a pair of matches at home Tuesday, September 19, sweeping De Soto, WI, 25-8 and 25-12, and also defeating Seneca, WI, 16-25, 25-21 and 15-13.

Holding a 9-9 match record so far this season, including a 3-2 start to their Upper Iowa Conference campaign, the volleyball Hawks are next scheduled to host MFL/MarMac Tuesday, September 26 and will then have more than a week to prepare for a Thursday, October 5 match at Postville.

For one half of football it was a happy Homecoming for the Kee football team, but a halftime lead of 26-22 was eroded away by turnovers and depleted squad numbers in the second half to ultimately play out to a 66-26 Kee defeat against Dunkerton Friday, September 22. The Hawks battled a ninth opponent on the Eight-Man football field, as the heat and humidity of Friday began to take its toll on the Hawks in the second half, where four of their six possessions of the half were ended by turnovers and they were outscored by a 44-0 result.

Friday, September 22 proved to be a happy Homecoming for the Waukon football team, as the Indians took out their frustrations from their season’s first loss a week earlier on a visiting Waterloo Columbus team with just one win to its credit so far this season. After playing to a 16-0 headstart through the first quarter, the grid Tribe took advantage of an abundance of golden opportunities to erupt for 35 points in the second frame on the way to a 51-0 halftime lead that would stand at a 51-7 Indian Homecoming victory after Columbus managed its lone tally late in the ballgame.

“Columbus is a school that had that one win against winless Oelwein, so that is the sort of game kids can overlook,” Waukon football coach Chad Beermann said. “Coming off last week’s tough loss, you add another concern. We had a good week of practice, and the kids did exactly what they needed to for a win.”

Germain "Jerry" Pins, age 87, of Asbury passed away Tuesday, September 19, 2017. Mass of Christian burial for Jerry was held Saturday, September 23 at Church of the Resurrection in Dubuque. Rev. Donald Bakewell, Jerry's brother-in-law, was the celebrant of the mass with Rev. Joseph Hauer as co-celebrant. Burial was held at Resurrection Cemetery in Asbury with full military honors afforded by the Dubuque American Legion Post #6.

Jerry was born July 9, 1930 in Farley, son of Emil and Kathryn (Miller) Pins.  He was a 1948 graduate of St. Clement High School in Bankston. He served in the United States Air Force from 1951-1955 and graduated in 1959 from Indiana Institute of Technology with a degree in Mechanical Engineering. He was united in marriage to Eileen Bakewell June 7, 1958 at St. Patrick’s Church in Waukon.
