Drew Adam of Waukon has been awarded a pair of scholarships through the University of the Aftermarket Foundation to further his studies in Automotive Technology. Adam was selected for a University of the Aftermarket Foundation Scholarship in the amount of $1,000  and also for an Automotive Parts & Services Association Scholarship in the amount of $800.

Adam plans to attend Northeast Iowa Community College in Calmar to study Automotive Technology. He was selected from more than 500 applicants for each scholarship at a recent meeting of the scholarship selection committee. The University of the Aftermarket Foundation, and other donors and organizations, will award more than 300 scholarships in 2017 and have awarded more than 2,500 since the beginning of the program in 1996.

"It is a privilege to support this program training people for careers in the automotive aftermarket," said Peter Kornafel, Chairman of the Scholarship Selection Committee.
 

''Summer Safety for Kids" was the theme for the East Elementary Kid's Club programming in Waukon during the month of June. All student activities and professional presentations provided information concerning the community services available for student protection. Presenters also provided the knowledge and strategies students may use to protect and/or defend themselves during the summer months and into the future.

The safety knowledge and strategies were then coordinated with the East Elementary academic curriculum of language arts, math, science/health, social studies and technology-STEAM (S-science, T-technology, E-engineering, A-art and M-math), for third, fourth and fifth grades by Mrs. Eileen Franks, Mr. Tyler O'Neill and Mrs. Pam Dundee.

Finney, the wooden fish hidden somewhere within the Lansing community as part of The Standard newspaper’s promotion of this past weekend’s Lansing Fish Days celebration, has been found. Rylee Mudderman, eight-year-old daughter of Dustin and Kelli Mudderman of Lansing, found Finney near the Lansing sign that greets travelers arriving to Lansing from the west on Highway 9/Main Street. Local youth are invited to join Rangers at Effigy Mounds National Monument Saturday, August 19 at 8 p.m. for a Junior Ranger Night Explorer Program. Junior Rangers will have an opportunity to work on a special Night Explorer Junior Ranger activity book, listen to a Winnebago story about the origin of the Big and Little Dippers, and explore the night sky with Janet Finn, a retired science teacher and member of the Starsplitters of Wyalusing.

Upon completion, children will leave with a Night Explorer activity book and badge, solar eclipse viewing glasses, and a better understanding of the night sky. This program is designed for children ages five and over. Registration is required and space is limited. Call 563-873-3491, ext. 123 for reservations. Monday, August 14, at approximately 5:25 p.m., the Allamakee County Sheriff's Office received a report of a vehicle being driven into the Mississippi River off of Front Street in Lansing. Upon investigation, it was discovered that Michelle Rose Timmons, age 51, of McGregor had driven her car into the river but was able to escape and swim toward the shore, getting assistance from bystanders in the area.

Timmons then left the scene, but bystanders went to the nearby Lansing Fire Station and alerted firefighters that Timmons had driven her vehicle into the river. The vehicle was retrieved from the water at approximately 10:30 p.m. and a dog was located deceased inside the vehicle as a result of drowning.

Although a new face was poised at the helm of Kee baseball for the 2017 season, that new face was certainly not unfamiliar with the strength and tradition of the Hawk diamond program. Former Kee standout Pat Heiderscheit took over the reins as head coach this season of the program he once helped reach dynastic heights in the early 1980s, and although he was new to the head coaching role of the program, the return of all but two players from last season’s 24-15 season helped ease that transition and guide this season’s campaign to a 25-11 overall record and the Hawks’ farthest postseason advancement in five seasons.

“I am very grateful for the opportunity to coach at my alma mater,” Coach Heiderscheit said. “If the players had half as much fun as I did, then we had a great summer!”

After making history last season with the first-ever State Championship in female athletics for Kee High School, the Lady Hawk softball team would have been hard-pressed to improve on such a feat. But the 39-6 record that resulted from that first-ever state title was improved a bit to a mark of 38 wins with just two losses this season - the Hawks opting out of playing in their scheduled North Fayette Valley Tournament that may very well have pushed their win total into the 40s. Even further, the 23-9 outscoring that came with last season’s crown was bettered to a 33-5 scoring margin during this year’s return to Class 1A State Championship reign. But even though the end result for the Hawks was a repeat performance, the celebration and feeling of accomplishment are still as thrilling as the first time.

The Waukon High School athletic campaign for the 2017-2018 season will get kicked off Thursday night, August 17 at the newly established annual Meet the Team/Sports Drink Scrimmage Night being held at Waukon High School, beginning at 4 p.m. with a variety of scheduled activities. The Allamakee Athletic Booster Club will kick off the event at 4 p.m. with its annual membership drive that includes an appreciation meal being served to Booster members and athletes at the Waukon High School cafeteria.

At 5 p.m., a featured speaker will address the crowd in the Waukon High School gym. Former National Football League (NFL) player Cedric James will be this year’s featured speaker. James played his college football at Texas Christian University (TCU) before being drafted by the Minnesota Vikings for a two-year stint and then spending a year with the Dallas Cowboys before being part of the New England Patriots’ Super Bowl XXXIX championship team during the 2005 NFL season.

The 2017 Waukon baseball team returned a total of 10 letterwinners this season from a 7-22 campaign last summer, but even with that collection of returning experience the Indians couldn’t advance their win total any, finishing this year with a 7-23 overall record. That overall mark included a 1-17 record in Northeast Iowa Conference play, placing the baseball Tribe seventh in the final league standings.

Despite the regular season difficulties, the Indians put together some of their best work as the postseason got underway, once again winning their first postseason game before having their season brought to a close in the district semifinals by a top 10-rated Dyersville Beckman team that eventually played to the Class 2A State Tournament championship.

Teletha M. Springsteen, 63, of Waukon died Sunday, August 13, 2017 at Veterans Memorial Hospital in Waukon. A visitation will be held Wednesday, August 16 from 5-7 p.m. at Martin Funeral Home in Waukon. Burial will be at Oakland Cemetery, Waukon.

Teletha Mae Springsteen was born June 21, 1954 in Waukon, the daughter of Norman Henry and Alpha Jane (Sires) Rosendahl. Teletha graduated from Waukon High School. After graduating, Teletha moved to Michigan to stay with family. Shortly thereafter, she met James Harvey Springsteen and they married December 21, 1972 at Bethel United Church in Cassopolis, MI. In 1983, they moved back to Iowa. Teletha worked in retirement homes in both Michigan and Iowa during the course of her career.

She loved reading books and watching movies. She also enjoyed crocheting, doing jigsaw puzzles, word searches and traveling. Teletha loved doting on her grandchildren. She especially enjoyed spending time with family and friends.
