Classical Conversations (CC) of Allamakee is now accepting new enrollments and registrations for the 2017-2018 school year. CC of Allamakee is a Classical Christian Community that will be starting in the Waukon area at the New Life Christian Church Tuesdays, beginning September 5 of this year.
Lisa Hagen, director of the CC community in Waukon, stated, "I am really excited about having this educational opportunity for children in Waukon and the surrounding area. This has been God's vision all along for this area and He is using us in leadership to carry out that vision. This educational opportunity will be in the middle of traditional homeschooling and public school. The parents will be able to teach their kids their values using a classical curriculum but also allowing for classroom experience with other students. We are looking forward to being an academic ministry to many families."
Saturday, July 29, the Harpers Ferry Fireflies Granny Basketball team struck gold for the second year in a row. Coached by Bill Nation of Harpers Ferry, the Fireflies traveled to Norman, OK to compete in the Granny Basketball National Championship and won all three games they played to reign once again as National Tournament Champions. Nine teams from Kansas, Louisiana, Missouri, Texas and Iowa played a double elimination tournament to decide who would come home with the gold medals. The Fireflies first defeated the Gray Tornadoes from Kansas, 45-27, before defeating the Fire Ants from Texas, 50-14. In the championship game, the Fireflies played a familiar foe, but continued to take care of business, leading the Late Bloomers of Cedar Rapids by 18 to 20 points for most of the game before winning by a final score of 48-35. The state of Iowa actually had three teams in attendance at the tournament and each came home with medals to sweep the top three spots in the tournament.
The non-profit Friends of Pool 9 environmental and educational organization will be presented a one-of-a-kind, hand-constructed hanging quilt created by Karlene Wonderlich (pictured at right in the above photo) of Lansing. Wonderlich, an experienced quilter and career Family & Consumer Science (previously known as Home Economics) teacher, has historically provided strong support to a variety of non-profit organizations, often with her husband, Arlen Wonderlich (pictured at left). She has wanted to quilt the Black Hawk Bridge ever since they purchased a river home in 2007, so she developed a plan which started with Arlen’s photo of the bridge and had it enlarged several times to create an accurate template. She then began the painstaking process to cut and stitch the puzzle together, often spending a full day just to complete one small portion.
The Lansing City Council meeting was held Monday, August 7. Discussion centered around a State Forester coming to take a look at trees on Mount Hosmer, fixing street lights around the city, dealing with the radium issue in the City’s water supply, and an update on the South Road bridge project.

The fourth annual Firecracker 5K Walk/Run hosted by Harpers Ferry Boosters, Inc. in Harpers Ferry Saturday, July 1 was considered a tremendous success with 270 participants registered from across the state of Iowa and six other states from across the United States. Each participant received a green t-shirt with the Firecracker emblem and a list of sponsors on the back.
The racers were welcomed by Harpers Ferry City Councilman Don Gibson, and Trekman Racing was used to assist and manage electronic registration and timing which enhanced the process and provided the racers/walkers with their individual times and ranking by age groups and overall. The 5K race featured an overall winner in the Female and Male divisions and gold, silver and bronze medals in seven age categories within the Female and Male divisions.

Replacing nearly two-thirds of its starting line-up from graduation losses last season and bringing back just two seniors in a limited amount of four returning varsity veterans, the Waukon softball team battled through a 2017 season defined by overall youth and varsity inexperience. With so many holes to fill and not much varsity experience returning, second-year head coach Amanda Eggerichs worked throughout the season to try and find the right pieces to fit the puzzles of her offensive and defensive line-ups, that effort resulting in a 7-25 overall season record for the softball Tribe that included a mark of 3-15 that placed the Indians sixth in the final seven-team Northeast Iowa Conference standings.
George H. Lee, age 71, passed away Tuesday, August 1 at his home in Lansing. A Celebration of Life will be held October 8 from 1-4 p.m. at the Kerndt Brothers Community Center in Lansing. Anyone that knew George or has a story to share is welcome to come.
George was born in La Crosse, WI October 8, 1945 to George “Buster” and Katherine (Wagner) Lee. He was a 1964 graduate of St. George High School in Lansing. He worked at Lansing Company right out of high school, where he met his future wife.
George Lee and Carmen Ames were united in marriage September 7, 1968 at the First Baptist Church in Waukon. Two children were born to this union, Andrea and Aaron.
His next employment was as an agent for Iowa Oil Company until they closed. He went on to be head mechanic at the Lansing bus barn and enjoyed driving school bus up to his retirement in 2017.
Mike Van Gorp, 69, of Waukon died Saturday, August 5, 2017 at Good Samaritan Center in Waukon. Funeral services will be held Wednesday, August 9 at 11 a.m. at St. Patrick Catholic Church in Waukon with Fr. Mark Osterhaus officiating. Burial with military honors will be at Mt. Olivet Cemetery, Waukon. Friends may call from 4-7 p.m. Tuesday, August 8 at Martin Funeral Home in Waukon, where there will be a 3:30 p.m. scripture service, and one hour before services at the church Wednesday.
George Michael Van Gorp was born January 27, 1948 in Waterloo, the son of Max and Florence (Davis) Van Gorp. Mike grew up in Decorah and in 1966 graduated from Thomas Roberts High School. He enlisted in the Marine Corps and was on active duty from 1966-68, serving in Vietnam; Mike was then transferred to the Marine Reserves through 1972.
