Designation could open funding and other preservation resources
Preservation Iowa has designated nine properties for 2017 Most Endangered designations. Among those properties are the Stone Schoolhouse located in Lansing.
According to information gathered and reported by Preservation Iowa, the Stone Schoolhouse was built in 1863 and cost $5,000 to build. It operated as a school until 1973 and is reportedly the oldest schoolhouse that was in continual use west of the Mississippi. Its architectural style and building materials are emblematic of the period in which it was built and the local materials available for such a construction.
The building had a new roof added in the 1960s and there were some emergency repairs to the foundation in the same time period. It is listed on the National Register of Historic Places and is currently under the ownership of the City of Lansing.
The Waukon Police Department responded to a call of vandalism (pictured in a submitted photo) that took place during the overnight hours of Saturday, February 4 into Sunday, February 5 and left the front of the Krambeer Barber Shop building and its sidewalk on Main Street in downtown Waukon covered in an oily substance believed to be motor oil, according to the report issued by Waukon Police. The Waukon Police Department is continuing to investigate the incident, and a reward (see advertisement below) is being offered for information leading to the conviction of the person(s) involved in the incident.
The Allamakee County Board of Supervisors met in regular session Monday, February 13. Among the agenda items addressed were an insurance quote presentation by Kerndt Brothers Insurance, an unemployment presentation by Iowa Workforce Development and discussion of the Luster Heights facility closure.
The Waukon Police Department has received a report of some recent mailings that are being received that claim to be endorsed by the Waukon Police Department. Although these campaigns sending the mailings may be legitimate organizations, local police officials say the Waukon Police Department is not connected with these organizations and has not endorsed them.
It is further advised that the only fundraising campaign the Waukon Police Department has been in connection with is the National Child Safety Council (coincidentally, that association was recently honored for its 30-year anniversary, as evident in the picture located above on this same page). Police department officials recommend that if anyone wishes to make donations to any type of organization, they should make them to an organization that they are familiar with.
The Waukon Police Department was recently honored for reaching a 30-year milestone in its partnership with the National Child Safety Council, implementing a child safety and drug prevention education program for local children and their parents. The police department has implemented and supported these programs through the distribution and use of educational literature and other materials, many of them featuring Safety Pup, and activities, such as a bicycle safety course, all designed by the National Child Safety Council, a nonprofit organization. The music departments of Waukon High School and Waukon Middle School will be hosting the seventh annual Pops Concert Saturday, February 25 at the Waukon Middle School gymnasium. Doors will open at 6:30 p.m. with concert time at 7:30 p.m. The Pops Concert features high energy musical numbers from the 1950s through today. Nearly every musical group at the Waukon Middle School and Waukon High School participates in this concert, including jazz bands, bucket bands, select sixth grade vocalists, and all choral groups in grades 7-12. Musical numbers will feature solo performances, percussionists, guitar players and choreographed movements. This year, the Pops Concert will feature special appearances from the choir program’s very own Barbershop Quartet.
Saturday, February 4 the Waukon High School Speech Department participated in the State Large Group Speech Contest at Dubuque Senior High School. Waukon had nine groups involving 36 students that had been selected to participate at State from the District contest held previously in Decorah. Throughout the day, the nine groups either performed or presented their taped presentations. The groups ranging from a One Act play to taped radio programs were judged by a panel of three certified judges. The judges gave ratings from 1 to 4, with the best being a 1 rating and a 4 is a disqualification. The ratings of the three judges are averaged together for the final rating. Waukon had six groups receive one ratings and three groups receive two ratings. Then each judge is able to nominate groups for the All-State Festival, which is a very distinguished award.

Students comprising four Kee High School Speech teams performed at the State Contest hosted by Dubuque Senior High School Saturday, February 4. All four Kee teams received a perfect "one" rating from all three judges.
In addition to its "one" rating, one of those four Kee teams was selected to perform at the All-State Speech Festival on the campus of Iowa State University in Ames this Saturday, February 18. The mime performance of "Convertible Carelessness Casualties" was selected for that honor. Earning that All-State Speech advancement is the team of Rachel Walleser, Michelle Walleser, Kinley Schobert and Neve Goetzinger.
"Kee had a perfect day," Kee High School Speech instructor Tammy Manning commented. "It is great to have Kee High be represented at the All-State Speech Festival again."

Veterans Memorial Hospital began its own Cardiac Rehabilitation unit nearly two decades ago to help fulfill a need in the community - a need that has been and continues to be well utilized.
Heart disease is the leading cause of death in the United States, where half a million people die each year due to this disease. Many people develop symptoms of heart disease when they are in their 40s or 50s, interrupting a most productive time of life. Cardiac Rehabilitation is an important tool in the fight against heart disease. Rehabilitation involves monitored exercise, nutritional counseling, emotional support and education about lifestyle changes to reduce risks of heart problems.
Veterans Memorial Hospital staff recently completed its annual high school basketball wellness games tour visiting all the neighboring schools of Monona, Postville, Lansing and Waukon, offering free wellness testing at each location.
Over 100 free wellness tests were completed on individuals who stopped at the booth. Information on sports nutrition and sports injuries was handed out, as well as a focus on the community wellness testing offered at the Laboratory at Veterans Memorial Hospital.
