The 2017 Mission Trip taken by First Baptist Church of Waukon June 2-18 to Brazil proved to be a wonderful and positive experience for the 13 members of the mission team. Those team members included Steve Kiley, Deb Kiley, Kari Roney, Claire Beyer, Sidney McQuade, Nathan Smith, Morgan Van Ruler, Michael Smith, Brenna Smith, Aislinn Goettel, Jacob Smith, Pastor Duane Smith and Cristina Smith.

The mission team began fundraising one year in advance and prepared a 45-minute presentation of drama, music, puppets and translated testimonies in the Portuguese language under the direction of Pastor Duane and Cristina Smith. Cristina Smith, carrying dual citizenship with the countries of Brazil and the United States due to being born to missionary parents in southern Brazil, taught the mission team Portuguese phrases, lyrics to Christian songs, and aided each member in preparing their salvation testimonies.

Veterans Memorial Hospital will be offering free blood sugar testing with immediate results at the Waukon Corn Days celebration Friday, August 18. The tests will be performed by Teresa Myers, RN, Certified Diabetes Educator, in the Veterans Memorial Hospital first aid tent located in the Waukon State Bank parking lot, from 4:30-8 p.m.

Community and Home Care staff members Annette Davis, RN and Joan Fish, CNA will also be providing free blood pressure checks during the same time. Veterans Memorial Hospital staff will also have educational materials on sun safety and handing out skin safe samples of sunscreen in the first aid tent.

First aid supplies will also be available for anyone in need.

Veterans Memorial Hospital will be sponsoring its 24th annual 5K Cardiac Classic Run/Walk Saturday, August 19, in conjunction with the Waukon Corn Days celebration. This year, the event welcomes a shorter 1.5-mile walking route with an optional 5K (3.1-mile route) to offer distances that will please everyone of any age or ability that wishes to participate. The event will begin and end at Veterans Memorial Hospital in Waukon at 8 a.m. with registration beginning at 7 a.m.

This is a free wellness event for all ages. Anyone in the area communities is welcome to attend and enjoy a walk or run around the scenic city of Waukon. The first distance offered on the route is a 1.5-mile loop around the hospital campus and golf course. Participants may choose to return to the hospital at that point, or go the entire distance of the 5K or 3.1 miles that will continue around the city streets of Waukon before returning to the hospital campus.

The local Grief Support Group will hold its monthly meeting at Veterans Memorial Hospital Wednesday, August 9 at 2 p.m. This informal meeting is open to anyone suffering from any type of loss, whether it be death, divorce, illness or some other grief. Feel free to attend and bring a friend. This grief support group meets the second Wednesday of each month at Veterans Memorial Hospital.
 

The Veterans Memorial Hospital Diabetes Support Group will hold its next meeting Thursday, August 17 at 10 a.m. The meeting will be held at Veterans Memorial Hospital in the Large Conference Room, located on the lower level of the hospital in Waukon.

Shelby Brink and Jesse Hisel of Huxley announce their engagement and upcoming wedding to be held in an outdoor service at the Brink family farm in rural Postville August 12. A reception at the Barn Restaurant in Prairie du Chien, WI will follow the ceremony.

The bride-elect is the daughter of Al Brink and Becky Underbakke of Waukon. She is a 2011 graduate of Waukon High School and a 2014 graduate of Drake University with a Bachelor’s degree in Broadcast News and Sociology. She is employed as a newscast producer at KCCI Television in Des Moines.

The groom-elect is the son of Jay and Jeanine Hisel of Lansing. He is a 2010 graduate of Kee High School in Lansing and a 2012 graduate of Iowa Lakes Community College with an Associate in Applied Science degree in Wind Energy and Turbine Technology. He is employed as an Electronics Repair Technician Level 2 at NextEra Energy in Story City.

Ashley Brink and Tyler Manning announce their engagement and upcoming wedding to be held at the Waukon City Park in an outdoor service September 2. A reception and dance at the Waukon Banquet Center will follow the ceremony.

The bride-elect is the daughter of Jeff Brink and Susan Guyer of Waukon. She is a 2008 graduate of Waukon Senior High School and a 2013 graduate of University of Northern Iowa with a Bachelor’s degree in Accounting. She is employed as the office manager at G&S Machine in Waukon.

The groom-elect is the son of Tim and Laurie Manning of Lansing. He is a 2011 graduate of Kee High School in Lansing and a 2013 graduate of Northeast Iowa Community College with an Associate of Applied Science degree through the John Deere Tech program. He is employed as a technician for Bodensteiner Implement in Waukon.
 

Jane Elaine (Palmer) Rausch and James Dean Johnson were united in marriage July 1, 2017 surrounded by their family and close friends in one of the historic family farm barns at their home in rural Waterville/Monona.  Officiating the ceremony was Loretta Muffett, niece and goddaughter of the groom.

The bride is the daughter of Norbert and Nola (Enyart) Palmer of Waukon, and the granddaughter of the late Emmett and Evelyn (Klees) Palmer, and Russell and Adeline (Smith) Enyart.

The groom is the son of the late Levi and Drucilla (Buege) Johnson of Waukon, and the grandson of the late Leo and Ruth (Ralston) Johnson and Ferdinand and Florence (Harris) Buege.

The parents of the bride were escorted down the aisle by the groom, and the bride was escorted down the aisle by her sons, Benjamin and Michael Rausch, to the songs “When I Say I Do” and “The Day Before You”.

Angie Guider and Detrick Steiber, both of Lansing, wish to invite family and friends to a dance celebrating their recent wedding ceremony. The dance will be held August 19 from 8-12 p.m. at the Winchester in Waterville.
The bride’s parents are Tom and Marion Guider of Lansing. The groom’s parents are Daryl Steiber (Pam Lichty) and Diana Steiber (Bill Meyer), all of Lansing.

Sean and Rose Onsgard of Dorchester announce the birth of their daughter, Stella Rose Onsgard, born July 28, 2017 at Veterans Memorial Hospital in Waukon. She weighed 7 lbs. 2 ozs. and measured 19-3/4 inches in length at the time of her birth. She joins a brother, Walter (3).

Grandparents are Pat and Jerald Oakes of Spring Grove, MN, Kenneth Onsgard of La Crosse, WI, Kathy McClenathen of Winona, MN and Roger Hammel of Dorchester. Great-grandparents are Walter and Maryann Mahr of Dorchester and Ralph Hammel, Sr. of Decorah.
