The annual Kid’s Archeology Day at Effigy Mounds National Monument will be held this Saturday, August 5 from 1-3 p.m. at the Visitor Center. All ages are invited to participate in the events, which will take place rain or shine and are free of charge. A variety of activities offer kids the opportunity to learn about the past by trying their hand at decorating clay, basket weaving, fur trade era beaded bracelets, spear throwing with an atlatl (as pictured above) and American Indian games. Kids visiting Effigy Mounds can also participate in a Junior Ranger program by picking up a Junior Ranger Book and completing age-appropriate activities to earn a new wooden Effigy Mounds Junior Ranger badge.

Nineteen students from the Waukon High School Future Business Leaders of America (FBLA) chapter traveled to Anaheim, CA June 28-July 3 for the FBLA National Leadership Conference. These students joined more than 9,600 other high school students as they competed in business-related competitive events. Students also had the opportunity to attend workshops and listen to keynote speaker Rob Schallenberger. While in California, students visited Huntington Beach, Universal Studios, Newport Beach, Downtown Disney and attended an Anaheim Angels baseball game. Northeast Iowa Community College (NICC) Business and Community Solutions is offering the class “Financial Planning for Millenials” Wednesday, August 16 from 9-11 a.m. and “Estate Planning Essentials for Everyone” Thursday, September 7 from 3-5 p.m. at the NICC Waukon Center, located at 1220 Third Avenue NW.

Keystone Area Education Agency (AEA) will be offering the required training course for the Iowa Substitute Authorization. This authorization allows an individual to substitute in a PK-12 classroom. For those who are a Certified Paraeducator, this assigned special education classroom may be at the elementary, middle school, junior high school or high school level.

The four core components of the course are Classroom Management, Strategies for Learning, Diversity and Ethics. Upon successful completion of the program the participant may apply to the Board of Educational Examiners for a license. A state and federal background check is also required. Local districts have the option of hiring individuals with the Substitute Authorization, but it does not guarantee employment. Interested parties are encouraged to check with their local district.

... that a situation in Minneapolis recently seems to be a perfect example of what can go wrong when leadership decides to make diversity a goal rather than a naturally occurring event.

I had heard and read about the incident in which a rookie cop in the passenger seat of a police car shot across in front of the officer who was driving, and hit and killed an Australian woman who had approached the squad car in her pajamas. She came to greet the officers because she was the one who had called in a neighborhood disturbance.

I did not give it much thought until a TV show I was watching cut to a news conference being conducted by the female mayor of Minneapolis. She barely got started before being interrupted by the audience.

I find myself writing again not to convince Mr. Quandahl to change his beliefs or voting habits; rather, I wish to ensure any impressionable readers are not swayed by his alternate facts. I have many thoughts so please excuse me if I transition from topic to topic sporadically.

Firstly, I write as a progressive member of the Green Party, but seeing as my only choice to resist the current administration is to join corporatist Democrats I suppose I’ll defend progressives as a whole. Progressives are not takers. I want other people to have access to the things to which I have access. I want other people to have access to healthcare. I want other people to have access to education, to housing, to food.

“I pledge allegiance to the flag of the United States of America and to the republic for which it stands, one nation under God, indivisible, with liberty and justice for all.”

“Indivisible, liberty, justice” can only be true when America is “one nation under God.” Without God is chaos and division. Just read and think on Genesis 1-4 to understand a lot. And compare 1 John 3:12, Jude 1:11, Hebrews 11:4 if you think Cain gets away with murder, even if he did build a great city.

Without God, man can not provide liberty and justice. God is the Originator of both liberty and justice, and a whole lot of other truth. God and the Holy Bible are “American values and ideals” greater than any I read in the Northeast Iowa Indivisible Chapter letter in the July 5, 2017 edition.

A program about Quilts of Valor was presented at the Allamakee County Fair Thursday, July 20 by area quilters. Allamakee County 4-H member Diana Davison reviewed her Quilts of Valor Citizenship 4-H project and Sue Lynch from Prairie du Chien, WI of the Northeast Iowa Quilters’ Guild shared quilts from the guild made for the Quilts of Valor presentations. Grace Murphy and Meg Schaller of Waukon showed a quilt made locally for presentation. At the end of the program, Quilts of Valor were awarded to Gene Scott and Dr. Alden Wiley, residents of Northgate Care Center. Additional Quilts of Valor created by Waukon quilters are being displayed in downtown Waukon in the Waukon Economic Development Corporation (former Tierney’s) building at the stoplight intersection. Verdon “Bud” Swenson, 92, of Postville died Wednesday, July 26, 2017 at Veterans Memorial Hospital in Waukon. Funeral Services were held Saturday, July 29 at Forest Mills United Methodist Church, rural Postville, with Rev. Kim Gates as the Officiant. Burial was at Minert Cemetery, Postville. Schutte-Grau Funeral Home and Cremation Service, Postville assisted the family with arrangements.

Verdon Marwin was born May 6, 1925 to Hall L. Jr. and Florence A (Lindroth) Swenson in Frankville Township. He attended Cherry Valley School and graduated from Luana Consolidated School and attended Seminary Courses at Wesleyan University, Garrett Evangelical Seminary and St. Paul School and received a degree in Theology.
