District Director Jayne Armstrong of the U.S. Small Business Administration’s (SBA) Iowa District Office is reminding Iowa small businesses of the June 6 deadline to apply for an SBA federal disaster loan for economic injury caused by severe weather and flash flooding in Winneshiek County that occurred August 23-24, 2016.

According to Armstrong, small non-farm businesses, small agricultural cooperatives, small businesses engaged in aquaculture and most private nonprofit organizations of any size may apply for Economic Injury Disaster Loans of up to $2 million to help meet working capital needs caused by the disaster. “Economic Injury Disaster Loans may be used to pay fixed debts, payroll, accounts payable and other bills that cannot be paid because of the disaster’s impact. Economic injury assistance is available regardless of whether the applicant suffered any property damage,” Armstrong said.

Repairs being made June 5-9 will impact local travel, as well as water quality and availability

In a letter from Mayor Josh Dreps, residents of the City of New Albin were advised that Monday, June 5 through Friday, June 9 the City of New Albin will be performing sewer main line repairs and replacing two main water valves at the intersection of Highway 26 and Ross Avenue. The letter advised residents on street closures as well as alerts in both water quality and availability at times during the weeklong project.

The letter stated both lanes of traffic on Highway 26 will be closed during excavation and repairs, and that the City of New Albin has been working with the Department of Transportation in preparing for the Highway 26 closure to provide detoured routes around the project.

The Waukon baseball team opened its 2017 season with mixed results against a trio of teams from the Upper Iowa Conference. The baseball Tribe kicked off the season with a 4-1 victory at North Fayette Valley Tuesday, May 23 before falling at home to South Winneshiek, 8-0, Thursday, May 25 and again at Clayton Ridge Friday, May 26 by a 5-3 count.

The Indians were scheduled for a busy early part of the week this week, originally slated to host a varsity doubleheader with Waverly-Shell Rock to open its Northeast Iowa Conference (NEIC) season Tuesday, May 30 before playing at MFL/MarMac Wednesday, May 31. That May 30 home date will have to be played at Waverly, as a water pipe in the Indians’ field watering system requires repair before the field will be playable again. The Tribe will then play another NEIC double-dip at Charles City Tuesday, June 6 before hosting Turkey Valley Wednesday, June 7 and playing at Decorah Friday, June 9.

The Waukon softball team got its 2017 season off to a winless start, although the Indians were leading when one game ended. That Tuesday, May 23 season opener at home against Central Elkader had the Indians holding a 4-2 lead in the fifth inning when the game was called due to rainy conditions and is not scheduled to be completed. Following that wash-out, the Indians’ luck didn’t change for the better, being swept at home by Waverly-Shell Rock, 12-0 in five innings and 7-4, in their Northeast Iowa Conference opener Thursday, May 25 before suffering a similar fate, 11-0 in five innings, at home to Class 1A top-rated and defending State Champion Kee Friday, May 26.

The Kee baseball team got its 2017 season underway with what ended up being a pair of doubleheaders that resulted in just a single win, although the Hawks were on the brink of at least two more. The week began with the Hawks being swept at Decorah Tuesday, May 23 with a 3-2 loss in the final inning of game one followed by a 6-0 loss in the nightcap. Kee was then scheduled to host its annual Shooky Fink Tournament Saturday, May 27, but a scheduling conflict, instead, turned that date into a doubleheader with Waterloo West, which was split between a 6-0 Kee victory and an 8-6 Hawk loss.

A busy upcoming week for the Hawks begins with a home doubleheader against Edgewood-Colesburg Tuesday, May 30 before Kee travels to Clayton Ridge Thursday, June 1 and then hosts Riceville Saturday, June 3, both of those dates doubleheaders as well. That trend continues at home with Starmont Monday, June 5 before traveling to South Winneshiek Thursday, June 8.

The Kee softball team got its 2017 season off to a busy start with a series of six games in five days, but put all six of those contests in the win column for an undefeated start. The Lady Hawks began that busy, and successful, stretch with a 9-0 road win at Decorah Tuesday, May 23 before sweeping an Upper Iowa Conference twinbill at home over MFL/MarMac, 10-0 in five innings and 4-1, Thursday, May 25 and then blasting intra-county foe Waukon by an 11-0 count in five innings Friday, May 26. The Kee diamond dwellers continued their winning ways by sweeping a pair of contests in comeback fashion at the Jesup Invitational Saturday, May 27, defeating Sumner-Fredericksburg, 5-4, as well as the host school, 13-12.

Cecil J. Colsch, age 82, of Woodstown, NJ died Friday, May 26, 2017 after a brief but accelerated illness at Seasons Hospice in Christiana Hospital in Newark, DE. Friends are invited to visit his family from 6-8 p.m. Thursday evening, June 1 in the H.T. Layton Funeral Home, located at 102 South Main Street in Woodstown, NJ. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Friday, June 2 in the Catholic Community of the Holy Spirit Church, formerly St. Joseph's, 51 Broad Street in Woodstown, NJ. Burial will follow Mass in the church cemetery.

Randy Allen Reed, 56 years old, of Dunkerton died Sunday, May 21, 2017 at Allen Memorial Hospital, Waterloo after a short illness. Local survivors include his parents, Richard “Dick” and Donna Reed of Lansing.

Authorities have confirmed a Lansing man has died in a crash following the washout of a portion of the highway between De Soto, WI and Lansing, just east of the Black Hawk Bridge Tuesday morning, May 30. James Walleser, age 59, of Lansing has been confirmed as the victim of the crash that took place as a result of the washout of the highway. In a report by WXOW television station out of La Crosse, WI, Crawford County, WI Sheriff Dale McCullick explained that a driver witnessed the washout when another driver ahead of them, Walleser, drove toward what is locally know as Henderson Bridge over Henderson Slough on Wisconsin Highway 82 and disappeared into the washout crater around 4:22 a.m. Authorities recovered the body of the victim inside the vehicle around 8:30 a.m. along Highway 82, approximately four hours after the initial incident.

Peter William Bieber, Jr. of Waukon died Tuesday, May 23, 2017 at Veterans Memorial Hospital in Waukon, at age 81. A Celebration of Life will be held Wednesday, May 31 at the Allamakee County Fairgrounds Pavilion in Waukon. The ceremony will begin at 5 p.m. with Chris Leppert officiating, followed by meal and music/reception. The committal service is at Oakland Cemetery in Waukon.

Peter was born July 29, 1935 in Waukon, the son of Peter Sr. and Luella (Leppert) Bieber. He was baptized and confirmed in his faith of our Lord and Savior. He graduated from Waukon High School with the Class of 1952.

Peter was united in marriage to Lillian Kvamme November 7, 1954 at First Lutheran Church, Decorah. This union was blessed with six children: Susan Eileen, Daniel Peter, Thomas William, Judith Lillian, Charles Joseph and Mary Rachel.
