Iowa Secretary of Agriculture Bill Northey today reminded eligible farm owners that the deadline to apply for the 2017 Century and Heritage Farm Program is June 1, 2017. The program recognizes families that have owned their farm for 100 years in the case of Century Farms and 150 years for Heritage Farms.
“The application deadline for families with a Century or Heritage Farm is quickly approaching and I hope those with an eligible farm will take the time to apply,” Northey said. “This program is a great way to highlight the deep history and strong heritage of agriculture in our state.”
Farm families with a century or heritage farm must submit an application to the Department no later than June 1, 2017 to qualify for recognition at the Iowa State Fair this year.
Applications are available on the Department’s website at www.IowaAgriculture.gov by clicking on the Century Farm or Heritage Farm link under “Hot Topics.”
Farmers in northeast Iowa and the surrounding area are invited to attend the Northeast Iowa Farm Energy Fair Tuesday, June 13 from 9:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. at Northeast Iowa Community College in Calmar. The event will offer the opportunity to attend workshops about technical and financial assistance available for farm energy projects and time to meet with local contractors.
Workshops at the fair will focus on farm energy efficiency and on-site solar opportunities. Morning programming will dive into information regarding farm energy efficiency including lighting, grain drying, dairy equipment, financial incentives, and technical assistance programs.
Programming in the afternoon will focus on on-site farm solar energy production and the incentives that are available for farmers. Industry professionals, farm equipment specialists, solar contractors, and lighting suppliers will be available throughout the day to explore options for improved energy usage.

Despite cool, rainy weather, dozens of area residents and other interested parties were on hand for the dedication and tour of the new Allamakee County Public Safety Center that took place Saturday morning, May 20 at the facility location on the former Makee Manor property north of Waukon along State Highway 9. The 2016 Memorial Day Observance Program being held at Oakland Cemetery in Waukon Monday, May 29 will commence following the traditional parade that begins at 9:45 a.m. in front of the Allamakee County Courthouse and marches its way to the cemetery. In the event of rain, the program will be held at the Waukon Banquet Center.
All Veterans are encouraged to participate, a ride will be provided for those Veterans unable to walk the parade route to the cemetery. Anyone wishing to enter a unit in the parade or seeking more information on the Memorial Day program in Waukon should contact Heather Homewood at the Allamakee County Veterans Affairs Office at 563-568-6135.
Volunteers are also needed to help set up the Avenue of Flags Saturday, May 27, beginning at 7 a.m. Those efforts will begin at the Allamakee County Courthouse in Waukon.
Waukon RAGBRAI to host May 25 meeting to discuss road closures, parking, other matters; All downtown businesses highly encouraged to attend
There will be a meeting Thursday, May 25 from 5:30-6:30 p.m. at the Waukon City Club Party Room for all Waukon businesses. It is essential that downtown businesses be there. Topics for discussion include: road closures and parking, decorating/beautification, RAGBRAI t-shirt promotions and a time for a question and answer session. The meeting is hosted by the Waukon RAGBRAI Hospitality, Publicity and Executive Chairpersons. The Waukon RAGBRAI committee will provide appetizers.
Waukon RAGBRAI to host June 1 meeting for all businesses and organizations planning to serve food
The regular meeting of the Board of Directors of the Eastern Allamakee Community School District (EACSD) was held at Kee High School in Lansing Monday, May 15 despite the threat of severe thunderstorms. The meeting was called to order by Heather Schulte, Board President. Board members present included Bobbie Goetzinger, Melanie Mauss, Bruce Palmborg, Kelli Mudderman and Heather Schulte. Also present at the meeting were Dr. Dale Crozier, Superintendent; Mary Hogan, Kee High and Middle School Principal; Chad Steckel, New Albin Elementary Principal and Marian Verdon, Board Secretary.
Third grade students from St. Patrick School in Waukon took a recent field trip to the Northeast Iowa Dairy Center at Calmar. The students are pictured above learning about dairy history and they also learned about dairy nutrition, the milking process, dairy breeds and the parts of a cow's stomach. Drew Adam, a 2016 graduate of Waukon High School, was recently awarded a $2,000 George White Memorial Scholarship by the Iowa Automobile Dealers (IAD) Foundation for Education. R.W. Pladsen, Inc. in Waukon recommended Adam for the scholarship, as he is currently an automotive technology student at Northeast Iowa Community College. Overall, the Foundation awarded 15 $2,000 scholarships to college-bound students seeking education to begin a career in the automotive industry. Scholarship applications are available each December.
