Ten future business leaders from Upper Iowa University (UIU) attended the recent State Leadership Conference in Ames. The Phi Beta Lambda (PBL) Chapter members showcased their skills and knowledge, and for their efforts the UIU students earned first place for the largest percentage increase in chapter membership (43 percent) and second-place honors for their local chapter annual business report.

Lynn Isvik, UIU PBL Chapter adviser, noted that for the first time a student from a UIU Center competed as a member of the virtual chapter team. Rick Johnson, a student at UIU-Des Moines Center, placed first in Justice Administration and Sports Management & Marketing, and third in Organizational Behavior.

The Kee girls track team ended up having just one meet to compete in as a team this week, winning the Clayton Ridge Invitational Tuesday, April 25. The track Hawks had their Thursday, April 27 meet at MFL/MarMac canceled due to weather. Kee junior Kendra Cooper did compete in the Drake Relays Thursday, April 27 in the discus event, with details of that showcase effort being highlighted in a shaded box in the Sports pages of the print e-dition and e-edition of The Standard.

The Lady Hawks took the Clayton Ridge Invitational team title by a narrow margin, topping the eight-team field once the final team score dust settled. The Kee track girls racked up six event victories and three runner-up finishes to compile 128 points, a championship total just five points ahead of second-place Sumner-Fredericksburg.

The Waukon boys track team competed in its only meet of this past week when the track Tribe traveled to Oelwein Tuesday, April 25. Despite winning four events and finishing second in three more to help rack up 77 team points, the Indians could not keep pace with Decorah’s 11 event victories and 148 team points in finishing second to the Vikings in the five-team meet field.

The Indian track girls hosted a near Northeast Iowa Conference (NEIC) Meet, as all teams but Waverly-Shell Rock visited Waukon Tuesday, April 25 for the Indian Relays. The track Tribe was a fairly gracious host, finishing fifth in the final seven-team standings with 70 points fueled by just a pair of Indian event victories.

The Indians were also scheduled to compete at the MFL/MarMac Invitational Thursday, April 27 and at the Edgewood-Colesburg Invitational Monday, May 1 but had both of those meets canceled due to cold and rainy weather. The track Tribe will now battle for conference supremacy at the Northeast Iowa Conference Meet to be hosted by Waverly-Shell Rock Thursday, May 4. The Lady Indians will then prepare for their Class 2A State Qualifying Meet to be held at North Fayette Valley in West Union Thursday, May 11, details of which can be found in a shaded box on this week’s Sports pages in the print edition and e-edition of The Standard.

The Waukon girls golf team split its two meets at home this past week to suffer its first loss of the season in Northeast Iowa Conference (NEIC) play. The Lady Indians first extended their NEIC undefeated streak to three straight matches with a 205-221 win over Crestwood Monday, April 24 before falling for the first time this season to a NEIC foe, a 170-205 home loss to Class 3A second-rated New Hampton Friday, April 28.

Robert D. Halverson, 78, of Elkader passed away Saturday, April 29, 2017 at the Elkader Care Center after a courageous battle with cancer. Funeral Service was held Wednesday, May 3 at Peace United Church of Christ in Elkader. Interment followed at East Side Cemetery in Elkader.

Robert Dorf Halverson was born August 29, 1938 in Lansing to Dorf and Viette (Thompson) Halverson. Bob graduated from Lansing High School in 1956. He then attended the University of Iowa for two years.

He was united in marriage to Sharon Walters June 24, 1961 at the Presbyterian Church in Rossville. The couple was blessed with four wonderful children.

Beulah “Bea” A. Hoofnagle, 85, of rural Lansing left this world Friday, April 28, 2017 at her home. The transition from her earthly home to her heavenly home was a peaceful and happy one for her. She will be cremated with no services, per her wishes, and burial will be at Garden of Memories in Waterloo with no services.

She asked that you just have some good memories and a few laughs with her in mind, and forgive her for her wrongs. If she offended anyone or hurt feelings, please forgive her as Jehovah God has forgiven her.

Beulah “Bea” Ann Hoofnagle was born in Mingo March 11, 1932; her parents were Leo E. and Mae (Funk) Turner. The Turner family later moved to Waterloo, where her dad got a job working for the Waterloo Boy Tractor factory as a repairman in the field and then went to work for John Deere Tractor until he retired. They were one of the early families to build on Evans Road in the area now called Evansdale.

Mary Jean Sivesind, 82, of Bakersfield, CA, formerly of Waukon, died Wednesday, April 26, 2017 at Divine Mercy Guest Home in Bakersfield, CA. Funeral services will be held Saturday, May 6 at 11 a.m. at Big Canoe Lutheran Church in rural Decorah with Pastor Kurt Bockoven officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Friends may call from 5-7 p.m. Friday, May 5 at Martin Funeral Home in Waukon and at the church for an hour before services Saturday.

A memorial service will also be held later this month in Bakersfield, CA for family and friends that are unable to travel to Iowa for her burial.

Mary Jean Sivesind was born February 15, 1935 in Waukon, the daughter of John Elder and Myrtle Aletta (Gavle) Tangen, and was baptized and confirmed at Big Canoe Church. She graduated from Waukon High School, where she proudly served during her senior year as the Principal’s Personal Assistant.

Michael Ray Moose, 45, of Waukon died Wednesday, April 26, 2017 at Good Samaritan Society in West Union, where he resided for his last six days. A visitation will be held Saturday, May 6 from 11 a.m.-2 p.m. at Martin Funeral Home in Waukon. A private family burial will be at a later date in Oakland Cemetery, Waukon.

Michael Ray Moose was born May 29, 1971 to Charlotte Moose in Iowa City. He was baptized July 1, 1971 and confirmed in April of 1985 at St. Paul’s United Methodist Church in Waukon. Mike graduated from Waukon High School.

Colleen Marie (Collins) Houser, 76, of Westerville, OH, beloved wife, mother, grandmother, sister, aunt and friend, died peacefully, surrounded by her loving family, Saturday, April 29, 2017. Visitation is Friday, May 5 from 4-7 p.m. at St. Elizabeth Church, located at 6077 Sharon Woods Boulevard in Columbus, OH. Funeral mass is Saturday, May 6 at 10 a.m. at St. Elizabeth Church.
