Betty A. DeBuhr, 91, of Waukon died Thursday, April 27, 2017 at her home. Funeral services were held Tuesday, May 2 at Zion United Church of Christ in Waukon, with Pastor Samantha Houser officiating. Burial was at Salem Cemetery, rural Waukon.
Martin Funeral Home in Waukon assisted the family with arrangements. Memorials can be made to Veterans Memorial Hospital or Salem Cemetery Fund, both in Waukon.
Betty Ann DeBuhr was born November 9, 1925 in Waukon, the daughter of Luella Selberg. She was baptized at Salem United Church of Christ in rural Waukon and confirmed at Zion United Church of Christ in Waukon. Betty graduated from Waukon High School in 1943 and attended Waukon Junior College. Betty worked at Hale's Clothing Store in Waukon before she was married.
(Gertrude) Gretchen (Ferring) Sanchez, age 98, died peacefully at Thornton Manor in Lansing April 25, 2017. A Mass of Christian burial was held at Immaculate Conception Church in Lansing Saturday, April 29 with Monsignor Ed Lechtenberg officiating. Burial was in Gethsemane Cemetery with military honors.
Gretch was born to Nick and Rose Gertrude (Doehler) Ferring in Center township, rural Lansing. She attended country school for seven years and then Immaculate Conception school, graduating in 1936. She worked in Milwaukee, WI and Racine, WI before joining the Women’s Army Air Corps. During WWII she was stationed in Goose Bay Labrador, where she did decoding.
Starting the first week of May, Waukon's residential garbage collection schedule changes to Tuesdays for south of Main Street and Thursdays for north of Main Street. The second week of May will include recyclables and begin the alternate week recycle pick-up schedule. There are no changes for commercial garbage pick-up.

The 20th annual “Family Wellness Fair” will be held at Veterans Memorial Hospital Wednesday, May 10, from 3:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. Free health testing, information and exhibits as well as healthy snacks will be offered for families of all ages. Veterans Memorial Hospital will also be awarding prizes at the Wellness Fair to all those in Allamakee and northern Clayton counties that participated in the Live Healthy Iowa 10 week wellness challenge in 2017. The annual “Family Wellness Fair” will be held Wednesday, May 10, from 3:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. at Veterans Memorial Hospital in Waukon. Free health testing, exhibits and healthy snacks will all be providing a complete evening of entertainment and education for families of all ages. This is the 20th annual event sponsored by Veterans Memorial Hospital and will include some special added attractions to celebrate this milestone. Everyone in the area communities is welcome to attend this free event.
Veterans Memorial Hospital will be offering a course in cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) for health care providers (those working in health related fields such as physicians, nurses, EMTs, etc.) Monday, May 8, beginning at 5:30 p.m. This “Health Care Professional” CPR class will be held in the Large Conference Room located on the lower level of the hospital.
The cost of the class, for certification or recertification, is the same and all registrants should bring along their own pocket mask. The card received with the course does certify attendants in CPR for two years.

The next LifeServe Blood Center blood drive will be held Thursday, May 4, from 12 p.m. to 5 p.m., at the First Baptist Church located in south Waukon. Blood drives are held once a month in Waukon, to allow for more donors to give. The LifeServe Blood Center supplies Veterans Memorial Hospital in Waukon with its blood and blood products.
Blood centers across the United States see a decrease in blood donations during the busy summer months. During the summer, people become more active, have busier schedules, spend more time outdoors and take vacations. While donations decline, hospitals see an increase in the need for blood. More driving can mean more automobile accidents. A person who has suffered severe injuries from an automobile accident can need up to 50 units of blood.
Northeast Iowa Area Agency on Aging (NEI3A) is a non-profit organization that serves 18 counties in northeast Iowa. The mission of NEI3A is to create and provide services for older individuals, caregivers and persons with disabilities to empower them to maintain their independence.
NEI3A is currently seeking new board members to help fulfill its mission. Potential board members must be a resident of NEI3A’s 18-county service area. The NEI3A Board meets six times each year at various locations throughout the service area.

Brian and Denise Wullner of Waukon, parents of the bride-to-be, and Tom and Paula Rosonke of New Hampton, parents of the groom-to-be, wish to announce the engagement and upcoming wedding of their children, Sarah Wullner, originally of Waukon, and Caleb Rosonke, originally of New Hampton. The wedding ceremony is scheduled for May 13, 2017 at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Waukon.
The bride-to-be is a 2011 graduate of Waukon High School and a 2014 graduate of University of Northern Iowa. She is employed at Bossard North America in Cedar Falls as a Marketing and Communications Specialist.
The groom-to-be is a 2010 graduate of New Hampton High School and a 2013 graduate of University of Northern Iowa. He is employed at Farmers State Bank in Waterloo as a Credit Analyst.
