WW Homestead Dairy in Waukon was honored by a visit from Iowa Governor Terry Branstad and Lieutenant Governor Kim Reynolds Thursday, June 26. WW Homestead co-owner Tom Weighner said that the visit was part of the Governor's commitment to visit each of Iowa's 99 counties once a year. Weighner said that he had met with Lt. Governor Reynolds during his involvement with the "Dream Big Grow Here" competition and that she had suggested to the Governor that the dairy processing facility and retail store would be a good stop to make. Weighner said that he and the Governor discussed the benefits the facility has brought to the county in terms of economic development and jobs, noting that the endeavor was partially made possible by approximately $75,000 in state grants and loans for start-up equipment. He said he also spoke with the Governor about unreasonable regulations that burden businesses and the economy.
Edward M. Faddoul, Jr., 77, of Waukon died Friday, May 30, 2014 at Northgate Care Center in Waukon. Memorial services were held Tuesday, June 17 at St. Patrick Catholic Church in Waukon. Burial was at Mt. Olivet Cemetery, Waukon. Martin Funeral Home of Waukon is handling arrangements.
Edward Michael Faddoul, Jr. was born August 5, 1936 in Sistersville, WV, the son of Edward Michael and Grace Kathryn (Glaeser) Faddoul. At the time of his death he was the oldest surviving member of the William and Mary Glaeser family of Cleveland, OH. He was baptized at Holy Rosary Church in Sisterville, WV, attended Marietta College in Marietta, OH, and received a PhD in biochemistry from Iowa State University in Ames in 1958.
Edward worked as a consultant in the food manufacturing industry as well as being a professor at various local colleges. He was also a licensed riverboat captain. He lived in Columbus, OH, and West Union and Waukon.
The New Albin Public Library will welcome Calmar author Elaine Hegg to a book signing event Thursday, June 12 at 7 p.m. in the Stone Quarry Hall (136 Main Street, New Albin).
Hegg is the author of “Death in a One-Room Country School,” which details the murder of Igna Magnusson in Allamakee County in 1921.

The seventh annual Mississippi River Adventure Day (MRAD) sponsored by Friends of Pool 9 is scheduled for Tuesday, July 15. The day-long event involves treating 120 children and parents to a series of experiences on the Mississippi River. Outdoor professionals will lead children on an encounter with nature they will not soon forget. The river activity affords children a hands-on experience with nature under the guidance and safety of trained professionals. Friends of Pool 9 organizers assure parents it will be a safe and meaningful day for their children. There is no cost to parents or children. All expenses are paid by Friends of Pool 9 and other donors.
Participants and accompanying adults will meet at the Lansing baseball diamond for instructions and be fitted with a personal flotation device (life jacket), transported to activity sites on the Mississippi River via Mississippi Explorer boats, and provided a noon picnic on the beach.
