Pride Projects presented at Spring Parent/Teacher Conferences ...

Waukon Middle and High School teachers and students showcased numerous projects they have worked on throughout the school year during spring parent/teacher conferences last week. The new annual event is called “Pride Projects.” The hallways of the middle and high school were lined with tables, display boards and projects that students explained, such as those pictured above and below. Staff and students were excited to show robotics, green screen projects, health activities, video presentations, mentoring experiences, math, reading and science projects, as well as band and chorus. The collaborative event was open to all parents and the community to view and interact with during spring conferences held Monday, March 20 and Tuesday, March 21. ISUEO-Allamakee County hosted Saturday Clover Kids March 18 ...

It may only be March but the Allamakee County Fair is right around the corner and there are plenty of activities for Clover Kids to participate in. At the Saturday, March 18 Allamakee County 4-H Clover Kids session, Clover Kids Willa Troendle and Owen Grimstad shared their past experiences at the fair and what they exhibited in order to get other Clover Kids excited about what they could do for the fair. Then each youth spent the morning making their own fair project. Using ceramic plates and cups, the Clover Kids designed their own unique bird feeder (as evident in the photos above and below). Designs ranged from cows to WWE to ISU and beyond. Local residents are encouraged to come to the Allamakee County Fair July 19-23 to check out the completed projects and see many more.

Waukon native Michael Osterholm to deliver first Distinguished Lecture in Science and Leadership at Luther College in Decorah April 4

Michael Osterholm ...
Michael Osterholm ...

In today's world, people, animals and materials move around the planet in record numbers and speed. These same advances that make modern infrastructure so efficient have made epidemics and even pandemics inevitable; and as outbreaks of Ebola, MERS, yellow fever, Zika and influenza have demonstrated, the planet is woefully underprepared for the fallout.

Luther College in Decorah will host Waukon native Michael Osterholm, University of Minnesota Regents Professor and McKnight Endowed Presidential Chair in Public Health, for the first Dr. David J. Roslien Distinguished Lecture in Science and Leadership at 7 p.m. Tuesday, April 4 in the Center for Faith and Life Main Hall on the Luther campus.

Osterholm's lecture, "Deadliest Enemy: Our War Against Killer Germs," is open to the public with no charge for admission. His critically acclaimed book by the same title was published March 14.

Kee girls basketball team plays to third straight regional final during 17-5 campaign

After playing to program history a season ago with its first-ever State Tournament appearance, the Kee girls basketball team took its 2016-2017 season to the brink of that same qualification accomplishment for the third consecutive season this winter, falling just a few seconds and a single point short of a return trip to that season grand finale. Still, the Lady Hawks played to another strong season with a 17-5 season record that included a 10-3 mark that placed the Hawks third overall in the final Upper Iowa Conference standings and second in the small school division of that league.

Career milestone among highlights of 4-17 season for 2016-2017 Kee boys basketball

The Kee boys basketball team played its way to a 4-17 record this winter, battling through its lowest per game scoring average in the past 10 seasons. That 47.2 points per game average posted by this season’s squad couldn’t quite keep pace with the 57.8 points per game the Hawks allowed on defense this winter.

“As a team, we came close to knocking off Turkey Valley in the first round of the tournament, but poor free throw shooting at the end of the game allowed Turkey Valley to extend a narrow lead and take the victory,” Coach Sullivan remarked.
