We are closing in on the end of 2024. Even though we are in the winter months, things are not slowing down at the construction site for the new Mississippi River Bridge at Lansing. Work is happening on both sides of the river, as well as in the river. We’ll start on the Wisconsin side and work our way west to Iowa.

During our last update the contractor, Kraemer North America, had just started the upper portion of pier 3. This is the pier closest to the shoreline in Wisconsin. The portion of the pier above the footing consisted of three concrete pours. All three of those pours have been completed, including the top of the pier, otherwise known as the cap.

Iowa DNR offers tips to help stay safe when on the ice this winter

The recent blast of arctic air is growing ice on lakes and ponds across the northern two-thirds of Iowa. Outdoor ice enthusiasts are ready to get out ice fishing, snowmobiling, ice skating or fat-tire bike riding. The Iowa Department of Natural Resources (DNR) recommends a minimum of four inches of clear ice for fishing and at least five inches for snowmobiles and ATVs.

Ice forms at different rates on each body of water depending upon the size and water depth. Once frozen, conditions change constantly and ice thickness can vary across the lake. Rocks, trees, docks or other things that poke through the ice will conduct heat and make the ice around it less stable. Trust instincts - if the ice does not look right, don’t go out.

Enthusiastic volunteers needed to fill EMT Class starting January 13

The number of Emergency Medical Technicians (EMTs) in this area has dwindled over the years as licensed EMTs have retired. Allamakee and northern Clayton Counties are fortunate to have many emergency response services, but nearly all of them are in need of more EMTs on their service to share the call time, ensuring local emergency services are available 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

Northeast Iowa Community College (NICC) will be offering a face-to-face EMT Class in Waukon beginning in January. This class is not offered locally each year, so the fact it will be held in Waukon is a convenience for those wishing to take the course with little travel time. This is a 138-hour course which will conclude in May. Registration for the class must be completed prior to the orientation night January 13.

Blood Donor Day set for January 6

January is Blood Donor Month. Blood donations are needed everywhere, even right here in Iowa. The following are interesting blood facts on blood from LifeServe Blood Center, who supplies Veterans Memorial Hospital (VMH) with its blood products:
• Every three seconds someone needs blood.
• Blood makes up about eight percent of a person’s body weight.
• Blood is needed every minute of every day; summer, winter, spring and fall.
• Scheduled surgeries are often canceled around the country due to a lack of blood.
• Donating blood includes a health check for the donor (checking blood pressure, pulse, temperature and hemoglobin) prior to donating.
• There is absolutely no way to contract any disease from giving blood.
• Blood can be split into different components (red cells, platelets, plasma, and cryoprecipitate) and used to help different types of patients.

Word for Word 12/25/24

Pr. James Buckhahn
Pr. James Buckhahn

Pastor Buck here from Lansing UMC with another Wandering thoughts of a Wayward Follower of Jesus… We are in the season where giving seems to be the theme. Giving has always been part of a religious life.  In Old Testament times it was the giving of offerings (i.e. the first fruits of the harvest) or animals for sacrifices. It was and is our way of giving back to God a small portion of what He gives us daily.

Kee boys basketball team remains undefeated in Upper Iowa Conference play with 74-36 home victory over Clayton Ridge

A “grand” recognition ... Kee boys basketball senior Jordan Cota stands with his parents, Jeff and Melissa Cota, as he is honored before the Hawks’ Tuesday, December 17 home game with Clayton Ridge for scoring the 1,000th point of his varsity basketball career at Kee High School, a feat he accomplished a week earlier late in the first quarter of the Hawks’ Tuesday, December 10 home game with Postville. Cota becomes the seventh Kee boys basketball player to achieve that scoring milestone, joining former Hawks Ric Zarwell, Pat Heiderscheit, Gabe Schultz, Quinn Schultz, Danny Brennan and, most recently, in January 2022, Dalton Dibert. The Kee boys basketball team was only able to play one game prior to the early print deadline for this week’s edition of The Standard due to the Christmas holiday. That single game proved to be the continuation of an early-season roll the Hawks have been putting together against fellow Upper Iowa Conference (UIC) squads thus far this season, as they erupted to another double-digit headstart on the way to a fourth consecutive UIC victory by at least 30 points, this one being a 74-36 home triumph over Clayton Ridge.
