Great tips on staying healthy

During influenza season, and especially now with the COVID-19 virus emerging so strongly, the following steps are highly recommended by dietitian Jill Fleming of Veterans Memorial Hospital in Waukon for staying healthy:

• Eat plenty of fruit and vegetables
• Stay hydrated with water                                                                                            
• Limit intake of sugar, sweets and soda
• Supplement with vitamin D (2,000-5,000 iu/day)
• Swab inside of nostrils with sesame seed oil (non-toasted)
• Wash hands often and keep hands away from your face.

EARL Transit suspends non-essential services

In light of increasing concerns around the spread and transmission of COVID-19, Northeast Iowa Community Action Corporation (NEICAC) wants to ensure the safety of employees, riders and the general public. Effective as of March 18, all Region 1 EARL Public Transit services, with the exception of those that are essential, were suspended. This includes the entire service area of Region 1 (Allamakee, Clayton, Fayette, Howard and Winneshiek counties). Those essential services that will continue will only include rider dialysis appointments. Further updates can be found at www.neicac.org.

David and Heather Bartling of Nevada, IA announce the birth of their son, Seth Alan Bartling, born March 2, 2020 at Mary Greeley Medical Center in Ames. He weighed 7 lbs. 6.5 ozs. and measured 20 inches in length at the time of his birth.

Darnell Burroughs and Lauryn Fogt announce the birth of their son, JD Allen Burroughs, born March 8, 2020 at Veterans Memorial Hospital in Waukon. He weighed 7 lbs. 13 ozs. and measured 20 inches in length at the time of his birth.

Mackay and Brooke Mathis of Harpers Ferry announce the birth of their daughter, Wava Ray Mathis, born March 15, 2020 at Veterans Memorial Hospital in Waukon. She weighed 8 lbs. and measured 20-1/2 inches in length at the time of her birth.

Frankly, my wife is the better parent.

Julie is far more attentive than I when it comes to holding our three children to task for things like homework, household chores, getting enough sleep, eating their vegetables, and taking their vitamins.

Me? Well, while I sometimes parent with the speed and efficiency of a well-oiled machine, I’m more inclined to be the let’s-have-chocolate-cake-for-breakfast-and-binge-watch-some-Netflix kind of dad.

But then came last week Monday, the first day of what looks to be four weeks of no school here in Waukon. With Julie out the door and off to work, I was flying solo – alone on the front-lines of parenting for our two high-school-age sons and our college daughter home on spring break.

Letter to the Editor: Disapointed in decision to cancel parade

To the Editor:

John Ellingson, shame on you and the rest of the City Council. Your explanation in the March 18 edition of The Standard sounded like a bunch of naughty juveniles who had skipped school.

Do you really care about how many people you upset by your decision to cancel the parade? First of all, many people worked hard to get ready for this. Then all the people  that were going to be there to watch a parade, not a gathering in a building. There was a large bake sale to raise money for the Waukon High School Prom. And I mean a large amount of great baked goods. I know because I stopped in after church.

I also have watched all the talk from the Governor and many others on the coronavirus.

We didn’t see any reason for the council to take this action and to do it right before parade time. This has upset a lot of Waukon citizens and we will remember this.

USDA Launches New Conservation Pilot Program for Prairie Pothole Producers to Plant Cover Crops
The U.S. Department of Agriculture’s (USDA) Farm Service Agency (FSA) today announced a new pilot program that enables farmers in Prairie Pothole states to receive payments for planting cover crops on their land for three to five years. The new Conservation Reserve Program (CRP) Soil Health and Income Protection Program (SHIPP) pilot is available to producers in Iowa, Minnesota, Montana, North Dakota and South Dakota. The signup for this pilot starts March 30, 2020 and ends August 21.
