Waukon City Council approves property tax levy for Fiscal Year ending June 30, 2021, discusses street assessments among other matters at regular session

The Waukon City Council met in regular session Monday, February 3 to address a full agenda of items including the Public Hearing for a Proposed Tax Levy, discussion of restructuring administrative functions at City Hall and an offer from the City to buy and accept the former Tierney building.

There was no Public Comment and the meeting moved into Department Reports with Police Chief Paul Wagner providing an update. Wagner indicated that 65 job applications were received prior to the submission deadline for the administrative assistant position in the Waukon Police Department.

Assistant Police Chief Luke Inglett discussed crosswalk safety for children with motorists being required by State law to yield to anyone within the crosswalk. Inglett reported that the public has raised concerns about children waiting at the curb at crosswalks with vehicles not stopping and that education on the matter with the school district is being planned.

Waukon Chamber of Commerce accepting nominations for Person of the Year, other honors

The Waukon Chamber of Commerce is seeking nominations from community residents for awards to be distributed at the Chamber's annual meeting scheduled for Saturday, March 7. Those awards include Business of the Year and Person of the Year honors within the Waukon community. The Chamber will bestow those honors upon the best nominated candidate fitting the following award criteria:

Business of the Year
The Business of the Year Award, presented by the Waukon Chamber of Commerce, is given each year to a business that offers high-quality products or services, demonstrates strong ethical standards, exhibits leadership with its employees and clients and within its industry, and is active in the community. The award winner must be in business for at least five years, locally owned or a locally-owned franchise, and an active member of the community.

Catholic Charities to offer Youth Mental Health First Aid training in Lansing March 28

Allamakee County part of national initiative focused on increasing mental health literacy

Anyone who knows a young person who could be experiencing a mental health or substance abuse problem can learn an action plan to help by getting trained in Youth Mental Health First Aid. Catholic Charities is offering a Youth Mental Health First Aid training Saturday, March 28 in Lansing.

This eight-hour training gives adults who work with youth the skills they need to reach out and provide initial support to adolescents (ages 12-18) who may be developing a mental health or substance use problem and help connect them to the appropriate care. The training March 28 will be from 8 a.m.-5 p.m. at the Kerndt Brothers Community Center located on Main Street in Lansing. Kee Post Prom to host Bingo February 16

The Kee High School Post Prom Committee will host Bingo Sunday, February 16 in the Kee High School cafeteria in Lansing. Games will start at 4 p.m., with doors opening at 3:30 p.m.

Participants can bring a food or household item and play an extra Bingo card free.  All donations will be given to LIFT (Lansing Iowa Food Trust). Every player will be eligible for a door prize drawing at intermission. Proceeds will be used to fund 2020 Post Prom prizes and entertainment.

Final week to be able to take part in Free Beat the Blues Winter Marathon Challenge for Northeast Iowa

The Safe Routes to School program offered through Upper Explorerland Regional Planning Commission (UERPC) will be hosting its Beat the Blues Winter “Marathon” Challenge once again with the start of the new year. Starting January 1 in northeast Iowa, anyone can challenge friends, family and themselves to complete a full “marathon” worth of activities, or more, through February 12.

Participants can run, walk, ski, snowshoe or bike 26 miles outdoors at their own pace when it works for them and their family during that timeframe, or play outside for 30 minutes in any activity to equal one mile. They can then record their mileage and submit it online after each “marathon” they complete for a chance to win a $50 gift card to Decorah Bicycles to rent skis, ice skates or bikes.

Scrap Metal performs for Waukon High School and Middle School ...

Monday, January 27 Waukon High School hosted the National Guard band Scrap Metal. They performed  a high energy show for all middle school and high school students. Scrap Metal is one of many ensembles that comprise the Iowa National Guard’s 34th Army Band, and is a modern New Orleans style Brass Band that plays a large variety of music, from current pop tunes, to ‘80s and ‘90s rock, blues, funk, Ska and riot jazz. All 38 advance to State! Kee High School Large Group Speech advances 11 teams to State Speech Contest involving all 38 participating students

The Kee High School Speech program experienced a very successful day at the Northeast District Large Group Speech Contest hosted by Decorah High School Saturday, January 25. The Kee program had 38 students competing in a total of 12 different acts, with some students competing in multiple acts. A total of 11 of those acts, involving all 38 of those students, received Division I ratings to earn advancement to the Iowa High School Speech Association State Large Group Contest this weekend.

The State Large Group Contest for Northeast Iowa is being hosted by Dubuque Senior High School in Dubuque this Saturday, February 8. Participating acts will be vying for possible nomination to perform at this year’s All-State Large Group Speech Festival to be held at the Iowa State Center in Ames.

Waukon High School alumna Mollie Marti brings THRIVE Resilience Model to Waukon schools in support of student mental health

The Alice Hermeier Foundation, a fund held by the Allamakee County Community Foundation, has partnered with County Social Services (CSS) to support the mental health needs of students by bringing the THRIVE Resilience Model to Waukon schools.

Mollie (Weighner) Marti, a 1984 graduate of Waukon High School, has returned to her hometown to help implement the project. Marti founded and directs the National Resilience Institute (NRI), a nonprofit organization that grew out of a community resiliency project she started in Mount Vernon after the tragic loss of young lives to suicide.

Waukon wrestling team defeats Clayton Ridge and Postville, falls to MFL/MarMac at home in final regular season dual event, finishes seventh at NEIC Tournament


Tough battle in 17-15 win by decision ... Waukon wrestling sophomore Meridian Snitker works to maneuver her Clayton Ridge opponent to her back in the Indians’ home quadrangular with Clayton Ridge, MFL/MarMac and Postville Thursday, January 30. Typically wrestling at 120 pounds, Snitker moved up to the 132-pound weight class for the varsity Indians and battled back and forth in a tough, physical battle, trading moves and leads before coming away with the 17-15 victory by decision. Unfortunately, Snitker suffered an injury in the match that, even though she battled through to win this match, did not allow her to continue wrestling for the remainder of the night. The Waukon wrestling team brought its regular season to a close this past week with its final dual competition Thursday, January 30 and the annual Northeast Iowa Conference (NEIC) Tournament Saturday, February 1. The mat Tribe first hosted its final dual event, defeating both Clayton Ridge, 45-9, and Postville, 41-24, but falling to MFL/MarMac, 48-31. The Indians then finished seventh at the Northeast Iowa Conference Tournament hosted by Crestwood High School.

The mat Tribe will next compete in its Class 2A Sectional Tournament at Decorah this Saturday, February 8.
