Deloris Ann Scott, age 90, of Austin, MN died peacefully Tuesday, January 7, 2020 at Benedictine Living Community in St. Peter, MN. Funeral Services were held Monday, January 13 at Mayer Funeral Home in Austin, MN with Pastor Madison Chelberg officiating. Interment was in Grandview Cemetery.

Deloris was born September 17, 1929 in Austin, MN, the daughter of Paul F. and Anna M. Fisher. She was baptized and confirmed at St. Olaf Lutheran Church in Austin. Deloris attended country school near Newry and graduated from Austin High School in 1948.

May 6, 1950, Deloris was united in marriage to Earl James Scott at St. Olaf Parsonage in Austin. Together they raised four children, Sandra, James, Larry and Cathy. Deloris and Earl lived in Austin. She was a stay at home mom, but as the children got older, she worked many jobs until she found herself working at JCPenney as a clerk, then worked in the office as a secretary/bookkeeper until her retirement.

JULY
Recently, Jack Meggers, an Iowa Arts Council Fellow, debuted his independent short film “The Burial” in Lansing and Des Moines. The film, shot entirely in northeast Iowa in and around the Lansing area, is a psychological, supernatural thriller. Meggers hopes to show this 20-minute film to film production companies on the East and West coasts and in Canada in the hope that one of them will agree to finance a feature length film of the entire story.

The Waukon bowling teams returned to the lanes Friday, January 3 after a weather-induced and holiday break from competition of nearly a month in length. That return to action saw the Indians earn a split with a nearby Decorah squad, the Indian ladies falling to the visiting Vikings by an 1887-2471 final result and the Waukon boys rolling to a 2914-2765 victory over their Decorah guests.

The bowling Indians are next scheduled to compete at North Fayette Valley Friday, January 10 before making up a Friday, December 13 home date claimed by weather Monday, January 13 against North Iowa. The Tribe will then host Waterloo Columbus Friday, January 17.

A return to action following the holiday break saw the Waukon boys basketball team play host to a Decorah squad that has its Northeast Iowa Conference (NEIC) season off to an opposite start (2-1) than the Indians’ 1-2 start thus far in NEIC play. That differing start tended to show itself on the court in this initial post-holiday affair for both squads, as the visiting Vikings handed the basketball Tribe a 94-59 defeat behind a three-point sharp-shooting effort that saw Decorah drop in 15 three-point blasts to account for nearly half the Viking point total in the ballgame.

December 30 Meeting
They’re open to suggestions. That’s what a number of Waukon Veterans told the Allamakee County Board of Supervisors Monday morning during its regular meeting.

Nine area veterans addressed the Supervisors regarding the future of the Vets Club building. Although Vets Club Incorporated has owned the building since 1950, it leases the land on which it is located from Allamakee County.

The veterans lamented to the Board about difficulties they have had keeping a tenant in the building.

“For the past  8 - 10 years, seems like it’s been hard to try to get a manager in there. The last two have left us where we’ve  had to pay their bills,” said John Regan Jr.

Regan cited low participation in the organization leading to a grim financial outlook.

Robey Memorial Library in Waukon is hosting a Matinee Movie series the second Saturday of both January and February, both beginning at 1:30 p.m. Viewers are invited to bring their own movie snacks.

Saturday, January 11 at 1:30 p.m. the library will show “They Shall Not Grow Old.” On the centenary of the end of the First World War, Academy Award® winner Peter Jackson (The Lord of the Rings trilogy) presents new work showing the Great War as never seen. Using state of the art technology to restore original archival footage that’s more than 100 years old, Jackson brings to life the people who can best tell this story: the men who were there. (Rated R)

Have trees curbside by 7 a.m. Saturday, January 11

Boy Scout Troop 64 of Waukon will be conducting their annual city-wide Christmas tree pick-up this Saturday, January 11 as a service project. Trees picked up will be used to provide shelter for animal habitat in rural Waukon.

Residents are requested to place their “live” trees curbside before 7 a.m. the day of the pick-up. All ornaments and garland will need to be removed. Wreaths, artificial trees and other decorations will not be accepted. For more information, contact Sarah Oakland at 563-568-7326.

The Allamakee County Board of Supervisors met Thursday, January 2 to address a variety of organizational matters for the 2020 calendar year. County Auditor Denise Beyer called the meeting to order with the Supervisors approving Larry Schellhammer as Chairperson and Dennis Koenig as Chairperson Pro-Tem.

During Public Comment, Executive Director Val Reinke with Allamakee County Economic Development (ACED) provided an overview of several recent and upcoming events within the county. Reinke discussed Allamakee County locations that have been mentioned by travel blogger Jay the Iowa Gallivant.

The Supervisors moved into setting Board Days, Start Time and Public Comment Time, opting to continue with Monday meetings, a 9:30 a.m. start time with ten minutes allotted for public comment.

Northeast Iowa Community College (NICC) invites the public to attend a free information session to learn about the upcoming Welding Career Pathway Certificate program offered in Waukon January 21 at 6 p.m. at the NICC Waukon Center.

The demand for welders in northeast Iowa is high, and local employers offer stable jobs with good wages that are going unfilled. With the skills learned in this Gas Metal Arc Welding (GMAW) class, participants will be ready to start their career as a highly sought-after welder in a matter of months. They will learn safe working practices, become familiar with welding equipment, use basic measuring tools, read manufacturing-part blueprints and identify standard welding symbols. By the end of this lecture and hands-on experience, students will also be able to weld carbon steel in multiple positions to meet

American Welding Society (AWS) standards, and be prepared for immediate employment or continuation in the extended welding program.

The Iowa 4-H Foundation has announced applications are now available for its 4-H scholarship program. Over 100 scholarship opportunities valued at over $110,000 will be awarded. The various scholarship awards range in amounts from $500 to $10,000. Some of the scholarships are open to students pursuing any field of study, while others are open to students pursuing more specific degrees in agriculture, food and nutrition, ag business, animal science and journalism.

Former and current Iowa 4-H members are eligible to apply for 4-H scholarships if they meet individual scholarship requirements, as determined by the scholarship donors. Applicants must enroll as a full-time student to receive scholarship awards.
